My mom and I went to Santorini for the day from Athens a couple of years ago. Left Athens early in the morning on Ryanair and returned late at night. It was a long day but we had the best time. Lodging is insanely expensive in Santorini we just wanted to see the views.

Santorini and Mykonos are all about tourism apart from a couple of months during the winter. I have been to both once as part of a Greek island cruise around 28 years ago and I have no intention of going back again. Far better, less touristy places all over the mainland.
@agirlandherpassport Жыл бұрын
There are parts of both that aren’t but they aren’t highlighted by the tourism board unfortunately. There are plenty of places to visit if Santorini isn’t your thing though and they need you to visit as well.

Hi Tiffany, great video for the logistics. Just another route I think works great. Use Crete as a departure point to Santorini if you plan to then return to Athens. More options from Crete. On a side note, since it was mentioned in the comments, if one likes tranquility and rugged nature, Amorgos is simply amazing.
@agirlandherpassport Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Most of the questions I get are from Athens or a nearby island. Not much from Crete but it is an option if people are already going there.

Tiffany-Every summer I go to Greece and I’ve yet to allot the energy for Santorini. Maybe I’ll go by on a boat someday! I very much agree with your warning not to book something that requires you to get to Athens for your flight home with no extra time. Of the nine years I’ve come to Greece now, five have involved cancelled flights. Honestly, getting stuck an extra day or two in Greece is a bit of a dream to me-unless it’s my fault for missing a flight! Then you have to pay! I always get to Athens two days before. The flight home still gets cancelled half the time but those extra days are then courtesy of the airline!
@agirlandherpassport Жыл бұрын
Wow, five times! Extra days are nice but that is stressful.
@TheGlitterGlobe Жыл бұрын
It is stressful! Especially when it’s the big flight. The airline doesn’t provide a replacement flight. You have to scramble to get on something else! You lose seat upgrades. Meals. Connections. Plus have to spend half a day searching flights trying to find something else! So it’s not even a full extra day in Greece! Except when it takes a couple days to find something.
@agirlandherpassport Жыл бұрын
@@TheGlitterGlobe They should be finding you a replacement flight if it’s their fault. Don’t let them tell you otherwise.

I still like to stay in Santorini, off season, for 2 to 3 days. Not day trip. Sitting by the beach or at an Airbnb or taking my time walking around the neighborhoods are enjoyable to me. Less crowd, so only off season even without much touristy paid attractions and large selections expensive restaurants

Third option would be stay a day while on transit between islands. What I would recommend is take the slow ferry that leaves first island at night and arrives in morning. Stay the day and leave by slow ferry that leaves at night to new island.
@agirlandherpassport Жыл бұрын
That isn’t always an option and islands close to Santorini there isn’t an overnight ferry.
@barbararaesis5859 Жыл бұрын
In my experience the views of Santorini from a ship is all you need. It’s beautiful from the sea. However, you can stay in a hotel, but it’s expensive and not as memorable as the view from a ship passing by. My opinion only!
@agirlandherpassport Жыл бұрын
The views from the sea are pretty amazing! Another reason to take a day trip from an island.

I actually think the ferries are set up well for tourists. In the end if your doing santorini for one day to save on hotel the plane will be more expensive. Some islands have chartered tours just do that don't book a ferry.
@agirlandherpassport Жыл бұрын
They aren’t if you want to stay on one island and go for day trips. There are more ferries now but it’s still not great in some areas. The airfare would still be less than most hotels in Santorini.
@tedn6855 Жыл бұрын
@agirlandherpassport 20 years ago the ferries were a hub and spoke network similar to how airlines were. The hub was piraeus and for the cyclades paros. If you wanted to go to Dodecanese you had to go from athens to the Dodecanese hub and catch a ferry to those islands. The traditional cyclades route which still exists for yhe slow ferries went through paros, ios, santorini. It was easy and going between those islands simple. Now there are all sorts of direct ferries that never existed in the past. Especially on fast ferries. I have done santonrini to rhodes. Rhodes to mykonos. Over the last 20 years I have seen many more routes.

We returned from Greece today. We spent four days in Athens and four in Santorini. We flew Agean on all flights both into Athens, to & from Santorini & from Athens. EVERY flight was at least 30 minutes late!! No apologies or excuses. Seems typical for Agean. My hard shell luggage was damaged from clearly dropping it, they said they would take care of it, gave us a tkt & told us to go to another gate. That person took my bag and ticket & they did nothing! Their food is terrible. We were in upgraded seats. Service at airports & on the planes were terrible. Planes had trash left in seats & pockets in front of seat. Avoid Agean if any of this sounds unpleasant! We will never fly that airline again! Santorini is beautiful. Wish we would have given Athens 2 days & the rest In Santorini.

I’m sorry you had that experience. I think it’s rare as I haven’t in all the times I have flown with them. It could be the summer season as well. I hope you enjoyed Santorini though!
