I have been playing piano for more than 50 years--classically trained, can sight-read almost anything. Grew up playing organ and piano in church and can sound out a lot of things on the piano, but you have taken my understanding of chords and progressions farther in a couple of weeks of watching your videos than I have in my whole life playing. I could listen to you play and talk about what you're doing all day long. So lucid--most people can't do that. I feel like you've given me the key to a whole new world.

Hello Warren. I started teaching myself to play the piano almost a year ago. There are only 3 people on KZbin I subscribe to and follow to learn and grow as a piano player. You are one of them. I myself am a dancer, but have always wanted to play an instrument of some sort (piano to be exact) since I was a child. I am a Christian and really appreciate how you have been allowing the Lord to use you to share your faith and skill as a musician. My favorite style of piano is Jazz so I will be a lifelong learner. I subscribed to your channel a few months back but checked it out several times before subscribing. I am a teacher at heart when it comes to dancing so I really appreciate how you have taken the time to teach with a desire given by God to help others really learn. I remember when you stated in the beginning of this year that you would be a teacher for those who do not have one when it comes to piano. I have observed and you have really been doing that. What you teach and how you teach is so that a person can eat for a lifetime, because you teach how to fish. SO thank you for the godly way you go about carrying yourself. I do not comment often on videos, but I am going to attempt to do that more with those who I have subscribed to. You have made learning the piano for me a very enjoyable and manageable process, which I really appreciate. This was another great video you have provided. Keep going forward and may the power of the Holy Spirit guide you each step of the way my brother!

irProteus and you think I need to be reminded of this because I obviously don’t know this? So you feel the strong desire to point out it. The point is your comment is irrelevant. I recorded the video and sent it off to edit and upload... the editor is not a musician which is why it was missed. Your need to prove a point makes you look petty which I find distasteful and so do the other viewers, so please, just don’t comment

Warren, I'm a 74 tear old retired dentist now living in Warwick, Rhode Island - originally from Boston. I'm glad to hear you haven't acquired a Maine accent yet. I have a head full of Jazz piano theory, but can't play a lick. Actually I'm taking Jazz and Blues lessons on another site. Now I have added your videos to my practice routine. I can now play El Shaddai with the melody and basic chords. Now I will add the open chords. You are a wonderful teacher. God bless you !

Ok, after realising what people was saying in the comments I had to comment this video. And i just want to explicitly state my appreciation to you. For all your efforts helping people all over the world. For sharing knowledge, inspiring and motivating us. Letting others, but most importantly you, know that there are more people thankfully appreciating what you're doing that those that are full of negativity, pessimism and criticism in their own lives and have to share and superimpose those spiritual states on others. Wish you all the best and never get unmotivated because of the minority. Your super fan from Portugal!

Great stuff Warren! I've been using these for many years. Coming from a classical background, I self taught to play chords with melody like you did. I just dont have the reharm techniques yet. I know you did show the reharmonising techniques and theories a couple vids back but I dont seem to be able to fit them in the playing gracefully without sounding overkill. Did I miss another video on this or will you consider a lesson on that one? Still, I learned a lot from that simplicity and breaking down the digestible bits. I know my gratitude may not hold much weight against the impact some of these negative comments to you. But I hope you are encouraged by those who really glad and thankful for what you did and the blessing of your knowledge to us. Thank you Warren.
@PianoLessonwithWarren6 жыл бұрын
KamHin Leong thank you for the kind and encouraging words. Yes, rehmonization is a delicate thing that requires practice. The two things that I find makes the biggest difference when using reharmonization is the voicing of the reharmed chord and the placement. And these two things changes with every song - this is why reharm is something you’re constantly practicing so you can get better at voicing and placement 😊👍🏽🙏🏾

Extraordinary work, as usual. The only issue that I have is with the enharmony: the software (virtual) keyboard of the application displays flats in E major, which is disturbing for the understanding of the chords: Gb m, Ab7, Db, instead of F# m, G#7, C#, etc in the tonality of E; to see a succession as Gbm - B makes no sense, which is actually a simple succession F#m - B (II - V in E); same thing for a Gb included in a chord of E as 9th (F#), or Ab as the third (instead of G#). For somebody thinking functionally the successions such displayed could be disturbing until got used to it. This is my only 'negative' observation, and I make it hoping that it could be solved in application, in preferences maybe; for the rest, the tutorial is a masterpiece.

Thanks Warren. How would you apply this to an old time Hymn that changes Chord on virtually every Beat of the bar, this is what I struggle With. Can,t read bass line well and play from treble clef and chords...it sounds to blocky and difficult to keep time.....do you use a different approach?
@PianoLessonwithWarren6 жыл бұрын
Darren Clarke the approach should be the same. Remember that the melody defines what chord to be played. The notes written in the hymnal were originally meant to be sung by 4-part voice, not as piano accompaniment, which is why it seams the chord changes every beat. I never play from the hymnal, even though I can, but I find it boring , so I reharmonize all my hymns which makes them more interesting and keep the harmonic changes more stable.

Hi Warren, so I consider myself a beginner close to intermediate learner, if I mastered a song's melody and chords, am I ready to move on to a more advanced level(broken chords, etc.), or should I just stay with playing open chords with melody? Also, I am currently using your beginner's practice template and i'm not sure if I am ready to move on to the next song, I can play the song, but I think it sounds really bland and boring with only open chords.
@PianoLessonwithWarren5 жыл бұрын
If you can play the chords and melody while the actual recording is playing, and you can keep up with it, then you’re ready to move on to another some. Rhythm and spicing up a song is something that has to be practice separately from learning a song. If you want, you can take that song you know really well and start to practice ways to make it rhythmically interesting. If you need help and inspiration on how to do this, then check out this course, pianolessonwithwarren.com/courses/rhythm-chords/
