Did you not notice how gunked up the fan was at 2:17? You probably should have cleaned it while you were in there, because it's going to stop cooling and give you a 'this unit may be overheating' notice real soon -- like mine is giving me. It might even be the reason your power supply failed.

I want to power the Apple router with 12 volts through a USB cable. How can I do this? Is it possible to replace the regular wire from 220 volts with a 12-volt power supply?

Well the router is rated for 3.5a at 125v. So scaling that down to 12v would result in needing roughly 35a of current which no usb cable is rated for. So no, you cannot power it off a usb cable.

Do these burn out often on the AirPort extreme ? I know its about to be 2020 but I just picked up a used Airport extreme v6 for 40$ and love it. I replaced an older router Linksys EA6900 that keept dropping connections all the sudden.

Why not clean the fan while you're at it. This will prevent heat build up and save it from premature death

Recent Airport Extreme Base Stations have all been subject to power supply issues and sudden heat deaths. The silently operating Airport Extremes and Time Capsules all eventually die from heat build up...

Apple decided to make a 2 in 1 device. See that empty gap? That is where a hard drive would go, so this can be just router or time capsule. The old “time capsules” were bigger and couldn’t be confused with a base station, but a cooling fan was required. Also the old base stations had a power brick, now the power supply is internal, which creates more heat. So over time, unless you know how to tear it down an clean it, it collects dust, overheats an here we are. Apple wanted make an all-in-one solution, fine, they should’ve added heat vents at the top of the device, like the old airports had.
