Kat and Mark, Happy 2025! Full of love and everything coming as a consecquence. That phrase, 'I wish I was....' heheh, gave me some trouble when studing english decades ago, the teachers got mad at me since the correct way was, 'I wish I were...' Time changes, and so the languages . Hugs and best wishes. Thanks again.

Amazing lesson. This is what I've been looking for. I hope you could make a video about the difference between using present continuous and the structure Be going to + V-inf when talking about what we do in the future. And the simple future as well. Hey that's awesome! I can clearly see here how we should use each wish , dream and hope correctly. However, I still have a question on the phrase that " if i had more time, i would spend the holidays with my family ". Can that be a new year resolution or a regret or sorrow that he did not have time?
@highlevellistening20 сағат бұрын
Oo good question. "If I had more time, i would spend the holidays with my family." is a 2nd conditional about changing the present. If you wanted to make a sentence about a *past* regret, you need to change it a little bit to be a mixed conditional (2nd + 3rd). - "If I had more time, I [would have spent] the holidays with my family." There is a more formal version of the 3rd conditional as well. - "If I [had had] more time, I [would have spent] the holidays with my family." I hope that makes sense!

Thank you for the videos. I wonder if such structures as 'It is necessary/important /essential /required (that) she (should) buy it. They suggest/require/recommend (that) he (should) learn it. are used ❤
@МарияКарасева-н8ь2 күн бұрын
It is called the Suppositional mood, isn't it?
@highlevellistening2 күн бұрын
Hello! To be honest that structure feels quite dated now. Perhaps the last time I heard it was in an old Christmas movie from the 60s or 70s. So while I understand it and am aware of it, in both writing and speaking these days, we conjugate the verbs as though they are in the present, for example: - It's really important that she buy[s] it. - It's required that he know[s] how to drive a truck. I hope that makes sense!

Great sentence and grammar! You're already well on your way to improving!
@bilalahmad-bo9ge2 күн бұрын
But why do you say,"i hope this year is better than last year." Why [is]? What about (will be better than)?
@highlevellistening2 күн бұрын
Sure! Both sentences are fine to use. 😊 We say "I hope this year is better than last year" because it feels more immediate-like we’re talking about right now and hoping it’s already better or continues to be. If you say "I hope this year will be better than last year," it focuses more on the future, like you’re looking forward to what’s coming. So, both are correct! It just depends on whether you want to focus on the present or the future.
