Marisa Donnelly - 👸🏼 After slurping her beverage out of a coffee mug? I think not! Her butler should have served her beverage in a tea cup at the least. He should be giving daily instruction regarding her table manners. Especially, as it seems, that she was quite allowed to run amok whilst she should have beed learning etiquette from nanny and eventually, her governess! 👸🏼 LOL🤣! Hope you are having a great day 💜

I think when thinking about the Queen’s speech it’s also pertinent to remember that 1. Her father had hearing problems; a lot of her slow and “proper” speech comes from that and 2. Her mother is Scottish; some of her pronunciations (mainly vowels) are also thanks to that.
@karenschafer2827
@karenschafer2827 4 жыл бұрын
And, her grands and great grands were German speakers so the vowels are more back in the throat.
@BattyButtercup
@BattyButtercup 4 жыл бұрын
furthermore, her father was not expected to take the throne & thus she and her sister were abruptly put higher in succession mid-childhood. while she would have already been learning etiquette, etc, the nature of the enormous burden suddenly placed upon her father (especially going into wartime) influenced her greatly, as would his (very private at the time) speech therapy. german accents, speech impediment, hearing impairment, those genes all the european families share (e.g. one for haemophilia) likely making her jaw/tongue placement rest in a distinctive manner... all these factors would have affected her manner of speech by default. speaking of speech therapy & etiquette/elocution instruction, Her Majesty was also of the era wherein the "transatlantic" accent was created. the dialect was taught as the "most correct" manner to speak english & was taught to be used for public speaking. this artificial dialect was thus adopted by actors, radio broadcasters, teachers... it is likely that her elocution lessons were based on the dialect.

When I hear you giving vocal lessons all I can think of is when my Californian theater group drove our British theater insane with the weird way Californian teens speak. Like how we don’t pronounce the last syllable of our sentences. It was pretty eye opening since none of us realized we had intense accents until the director made us change how we talked.

Lately I've been reading Winnie the Pooh and House at Pooh Corner to my little. I work my own play into the reading of it by practicing different accents for the various characters (I'm American but once upon a time used to teach accents to actors). I do the narrator, Kanga, and Roo in RP (think BBC, with different tones and pacing for each character), Pooh has a gravelly contemporary RP accent, Piglet is Cockney (with a very high squeaky voice), Tigger is from Somerset (because you gotta be able to say "Tiggerrrr"), Owl is Scottish (basically posh Edinburgh), Rabbit has an Estuary accent. I've been struggling with Christopher Robin because he has a much more posh RP closer to the queen, which is one I'm not very good at, so this was actually pretty useful!

Southern who? Like which country southern? If you mean English Southern It is because London is in the south of England and so it was most affected by the RP accent. If you mean U.S. Southern it’s because American southern has a slower speech patterns (some attribute that to the heat others to the mainly British familial colonization) and longer emphasis on the vowels. Why are the doorknobs so high? 3. What is a Gothic arch anyway? 4. Why does London have a Ferris Wheel? Then there's politics. 1. Just how many political parties do you all have over there????? 2. How can a Prime Minister just up and decide to call for elections? Don't you have those regulary scheduled? 3. Why do they yell at each other in Parliament? 4. Do you also have a President? Don't laugh! Israel has a Prime Minister and a President. xo

I loved this so much! Could you make a video about what the British actually mean when they say things like "you must come for dinner" and "would you care for a cup of tea" because I only recently learned that they do not in fact want you to come for dinner and the tea thing is apparently a cue you should leave their house? :')

I adore this. I wonder how much of the Queens speech comes from speaking on the radio as a tween and teen. And how much comes from being taught, presumably by the people who helped her father manage his speech issues.

I loved that creche joke! One Britishy I am curious to hear your thoughts on isTH-fronting (replacing the th with f or v) which is very common is a lot of British dialects and accents. I've personally had a lot of confusion due to this as f/v looks very different than either th sound, but I'm originally from the States where it is a lot less common. I wonder your thoughts and experiences with this. I know more than a few people from various parts of the countries that can't really hear or say the difference between three and free or thought and fought. Even when I was working with an audiologist who worked with older children and tested commonly mixed up sounds, they didn't actually test for th-fronting because it's seen as normal for that area. It's been a bit awkward both in understanding others and in helping kids with read/spelling.

Wonderful video! I learned something yet again from you! Really hard to pronounce some of those words with my northern American "accent"! I live in northern Minnesota (an hour north of Duluth Minnesota if you ever want to look it up) I was wondering about how Finnish, Swedish, and even north American "accents" came into popularity, I notice even people from other countries use the pronunciations that seem more like my accent...?? What happened? lol! And yes, I've always been confused about the UK and Great Britain! Pretty much anything over your way, they all seem to change so often... I'm 42 years old, and it looked a LOT different in my history and geography books than it does now! (so does the periodic table of elements, but that's because I'm also a science nut!) 😁🤓 I love you! I hope all is well with you and yours! Give the pups some love for me too! 💝

While it might be irritating for you as a Deaf person to be always practicing, I really enjoy your recent videos about accents! Could you maybe do one about different accents throughout the UK and specifically England? Another good video might be how wildly different the different sign languages are, and how even those have regional dialects and “accents”! My professor told me that even ASL can be drastically different from DC to a place like Philadelphia which has a rich, long-standing Deaf community. Love your content, looking forward to another video, whatever it may be!

You know, it's very, very fun, because that's exactly how we are teach to pronounce english in France (although with less "nose sound"). And it's quite difficult for french people to pronounce those sound, particularly the vowel, because there is few to none diphtong in french.

I laughed so hard at the crèche-joke! I don‘t know why but this sort of pun gets me every time! Also thank you for the excellent video! Your pronunciation is impressive and I love your way of explaining linguistic phenomena. It‘s really useful and easy to understand, even for a non-native speaker like me.

I think that you found a way to have fun with speech therapy! I'm usually good with accents when learning a different language, but speaking like the Queen stumped me. I kept rolling my r's, which is so wrong. Seeing a new Jessica video in my notifications always makes me happy, and I open it instantly.
