Free jumping, also known as loose jumping, is a good way to build your horse’s confidence and allow him to improve his balance, timing and rhythm - all without a rider unbalancing, pulling, or letting their own nerves get the better of them on a spooky or under-confident mount.
Here we focus on introducing a young horse to free jumping for the first time, building the jumps up from tiny beginner cross-poles, going up in height and width as the horse begins to understand the lesson and grows in confidence.
BONUS (at 10:58): Watch until the end to see an experienced horse jumping the same grid at full height! This is what you can build your horse up to with patient practice.
Set up for this jump grid:
Cross pole - 1 stride - cross pole - 2 strides - oxer (spread fence)
NOTE: the AVERAGE horse stride is 12' (4 human steps), plus you need to allow 1/2 a stride (2 human steps) before and after each jump to account for take-off and landing.
