Remember that your dog is a dog, he doesn't come prewired to know "not to pull on leash". A dog is restrained ALL day, confined to a house or yard, finally when the dog is outside, they get excited! Be patient, don't expect perfection right away, use humane training tools that can make your life easier and reward good behaviour. Loose leash walking isn't a difficult behaviour to teach, it's difficult for owners because it takes time to train.

Definitely still trying :P I have two hyper, excitable, and skittish puppies that I have to walk one at a time. They freak out and try to run home whenever so much as a car starts near them. I'm doing what I've read and suggested in this video to the best of my ability, and they're definitely learning. Just slowly. :)

You need to see success with training basics. Your dog needs to experience success very badly. They WANT to please. I think you are expecting too much, perhaps trying to teach too many skills and if you are frustrated you are probably not CONSISTENT and yelling and jerking and your timing sucks. One skill at a time in a small undistracted place only adding larger spaces and more distractions little by little after the first level is achieved. The most critical thing a trainer HAS to do is remain calm, serene and loving. Good practice in the real world as well...for YOU. The skill to become objective in any situation is key to happiness and success. No dog not a single dog is born knowing how to communicate with humans. Training is how our dog bonds with us. Getting a push button dog teaches YOU nothing and does nothing for a real relationship with your dog. Consistency. Calm. Caring. These same skills are the same for making a relationship with ANY animal; horses, pigs, cats, birds and certainly our children! Do you think giving your kids money just to get them out of your hair is your style? Then don't have kids until you know how to communicate with a dog! Grins. These videos by all these different trainers are wonderful. Find a few trainers you can relate to and mimic. I wish I could tell you the wonder, the HONOR to be able to communicate with animals. It is sort of like trying to tell a blind from birth person what the color green looks like. Animals TEACH us humans the necessities of getting alone of being a part of something much larger than ourselves...worth every bit of effort! Oh, this other dude in Virginia saying get a trainer...sure, but for YOU never just your dog. A push button dog made by someone else will do nothing for your relationship with your dog!! Once YOU'VE had training you'll be able to train other pets, animals and again, kids.

What really helps to continu with the method “stand still when the dog pulls” is keeping track of the number of times the dog pulls during a standard walk. When you do this you will see that the number of pulling is gradually decreasing. Not in a straight line, but It does.

Love this! When volunteering at a shelter back in 2015, I worked with a serious puller named Archey. With zero aversives, he learned to walk nicely and have fun while on a leash. It helped him get adopted :) These methods work!

I wish I hadn't deleted the video I made of him but I started out with simple focus exercises where he was rewarded for looking at me and then I added movement to the exercises. It took him a while but he soon learned to keep his focus on me while walking rather than what was on the ground

@@Lore-wv5mt same!! We adopted a 2yr big & strong male husky. Tried a dog park and it didnt go so well, either. He pulls SO bad and I'm not a big person, so it's been a struggle. I have researched everything trying to teach him to walk nicely on a leash. Recently tried a Gentle Leader upon a recommendation but he went nuts trying to chew off the leash (he isn't even a chewer), or he's doing anything to get it off him to the point where I can't begin a walk. The ONLY thing that works just the tiniest bit is the stop & wait then proceed. I've been working with him for 2 months and I often feel discouraged but if everyone says it can take up to a year, then maybe there's hope.

@@JR-cooru Same here, I have a female german shepherd x husky puppy that pulls me like no other... she is only 8m old but so strong already and I'm a pretty small girl... I struggle containing her when walking along with someone, or if we come across another dog. I've tried it all, no pull harnesses, collars, even resorted to choke collars at one point, but I still feel like my arm is getting yanked out everytime. Sometimes I wrap the leash around my hand for more control but that just ends up cutting my hand and I get frustrated, which doesn't help. I don't know what to do anymore, sometimes she won't even take the treat because she is so focused on pulling 😭

Appreciate this video. When you see so many videos demonstrating their dog walking right beside them, you assume that's the "gold standard" and something you should work towards. In reality, the thing that is most frustrating on walks is when you dog pulls you, not the fact that they aren't right beside you. If you can get your dog to keep the leash loose for a whole walk, that is the true "gold standard". In my opinion, heel should be a stationary command where you need your dog to come right beside you, and stay there until released. Thanks for bringing some sense to the conversation :-)

Oh my gosh I just found you and I can't thank you enough!!! I've watched dozens of videos in the last year to help me train loose leash walking with my dog and honestly, I gave up months ago. We always had lots of fun clicker training and going on training walks, but I felt like such a failure after several weeks and he wasn't 'perfect'. We couldn't seem to make the leap away from using treats all the time. I was so discouraged and disappointed in myself. NO ONE ever mentioned that it could take months to a year to be successful!!! I agree with your methods 100%! I never could understand why lots of other dog videos here use shock or prong or choke collars when really all you need is time and patience love and lots of yummy rewards. There is never a need to hurt or force the dog to do anything.

+OrangeBlossom Amen! Exactly.... "there is no need to hurt or use force", but there are so many 'so called trainers' that say you have to. I've trained a reactive, aggressive 160 lb dog to walk and behave without force or aversive tools. Patience is the key! Just not many people have that.

You missed the case of having a medium or large dog out of control that will jump on you and/or bite you. Remember that most people never take a dog through even 1 basic obedience class. To say that a prong collar is NEVER needed gors against methods of military, police, and rehabilitation handlers who do it for a living. Are you correct and all of them are wrong ? You are assuming that a prong collar is to hurt a dog and that is not true. An e-collar is not to 'shock ' a dog and your view is again incorrect.

Do you have suggestions for off leash exercise? I don't have access to any places other than a dog park, but it is usually very busy and my rescued dog is not very well socialized. She gets very anxious and defensive around dogs bigger than her, and since she's a pit bull mix I am nervous someone might call the police about my "dangerous" dog. We're working on socializing her but in the meantime I am not sure what else to do.

hire a pro to help you get your dog trained. once you have a bite, your dog MAY be declared dangerous... many states have a 1 bite law. Bite 2 to a judge means the dog is to be destroyed. No discussion.

Andrea Frederick Personally, I never recommend dog parks to my clients. Why? #1: Many people at dog parks are there to socialize themselves and not their dogs. Their attention is not on their dog as it should be. #2: Some people bring dogs that should not be allowed in the park. They are bratty, bully, disrespectful dogs which can cause fights. #3: People do not correct their dogs for inappropriate, dominate behaviors such as mounting, putting their paw or head over the shoulder of other dogs, etc. So, you are smart in your choice to keep your dog out of dog parks. In my training for off leash exercise, I use a flirt pole which is a piece of exercise equipment for dogs that entices them to chase a fast moving lure. I use it to get a dog to exert a lot of energy in a small space (it can also be used outside). You can also use agility equipment which is a lot of fun for you and your dog while also a great way to exercise your dog. You can sometimes find used agility equipment on Craigslist for a good price. The old tried and true game of fetch is great exercise for your dog. I also use Craigslist to find used treadmills. They are good for strictly exercising your dog. I hope this helped.

2006 in Sevier County in Utah I was bitten my employers dog which was running loose as I walked past her house after leaving the grocery store. She usually kept the dog chained up in her yard along with her other 3 chores because she had no fence. Her dog had already bitten 4 people including 2 children and police were involved in all bites but the dog was never euthanized or even seized and confined as a test for rabies. Technically according to the laws at the time she was informed by police that to keep all 4 dogs within city limits she had to apply for a kennel license but she never did and nothing further was done. Definitely agree however that aggressive dog owners need to be held responsible if they don't take the necessary steps to ensure that they're dog is safe to the general public.

We have a problem nationwide where thousands of dogs (and cats) are in some form of "incarceration". We are literally begging the populace to adopt, adopt, adopt. It goes without saying, not everyone with a heart to adopt has the patience for the work down the road. The methods you describe are ideal for sure and I believe every owner would prefer to use these instead of something that is aversive or negative stimulus (I recently bought a "no-pull harness and used for the 1st time to take my 2 pitbulls for a walk and it probably saved our relationship!). However your key phrase is "months to years" and let's face it, we don't live in a patient society or time. People can barely wait the 10-15 minutes in a restaurant to get their food and now you think they will wait months to a year to get a dog to walk properly on leash? We can't have our cake and eat it too. We want people to adopt these animals, then there needs to be methods of training that get quick, long lasting results or these dogs end right back in incarceration or worse. No, it's not the dogs fault but that is the world we live in and we have to deal with the hand we are dealt. I don't like choke collars, prong collars or the collars that give a bit of buzz, but if that is what an adopting parent needs to get the results required, are we ready to deny this otherwise good home to a deserving dog or do we acknowledge the world we are in? Just how many dogs enter shelters each day and just how many more are put down the same day?

Wxercise the hell out of your dog's and then take them for a walk one at a time! Be VERY patient with them. A grown dog has the mind of a two year old. . One trick to teach the dog to walk next to you is to start with a wall or long fence on its left side ( you're dog should aways walk on your left side) on put tension on the leash when the dog pulls foward or is trailing behind. You want your dog's head even with your left knee. youre not training a working dog but shoot for this and eventually you'll have a dog that walks by your side without a leash.

Antoine Simmons It can certainly be very frustrating when you think about the number of dogs that are euthanized every year in shelters. As a trainer, I have volunteered free training to many shelters and rescue groups in my area. So far not one has taken my offer. Why? I use prong collars. The shelters would rather dogs die or rescue groups would rather a dog never find a forever home before they would allow training using a prong collar. I know, it sound crazy and that's because it is crazy. I'm 100% sure that many of the dogs that are still in a rescue situation or in a kill shelter could be adopted with the right training.The scenario I see all the time is; a family goes to a shelter or a rescue group to find a family pet. They see this beautiful, friendly Pitbull (or other large dog) they are considering taking home, but there is one problem, they can't get near it without being knock down. The dog is jumping up on the adults and knocking the children to the ground which means attempting to take the dog on a walk is not even a consideration. So, this very nice family either checks out a more relaxed, calm dog or they leave without adopting any dog. Now, the out of control jumping dog is either put down by the shelter or the rescue group keeps the dog in foster homes forever. This is all because the shelter and the rescue group will not allow me to train the dog with a prong collar. I'm a professional trainer, I have been training dogs with prong collars for years. I can't figure out the reasoning behind their choice not to take me up on my offer for free training, if you can, please enlighten me.

Using a prong on a dog that is highly agitated or aggressive can lead to unintended outcomes such as the dog attributing the presence of other people or animals to the corrections used or redirecting their frustration with being restrained on a leash and having steel barbs digging into their neck onto the handler. Some dogs escalate when corrected. I used them in the past exclusively but rarely do now because there are so many better options with better compliance from pet owners. A lot of shelters know this and because the tool has a somewhat high potential for misuse and because a lot of the dogs lack trust in humans and have little experience dealing with the outside world, prongs have fallen out of favor. You have to remember that dogs aren't in shelters because people won't use prong collars.

This really has worked. I tried the head collar, the front harness, and he would rather stay behind and not walk instead of moving forward. I implemented these techniques and it did wonders. Must have patience with them because at first they might not understand, but with practice it really works. He barley pulled on or 45 minute walk, I also let him sniff grass as we went and gave a slight pull to initiate the walk again. Great video!!

Got a puppy that was scared as soon as we left the house/garden, she just wanted to go back home , she was 2 months and basically scared of everything cars strollers other dogs cats etc etc . The first thing i did was starting to make noise when she was eating she got scared i stop she start eating and i made noises after a couple of times doing this she got used to it n now 2 months later i can shake a pan full with knifes and forks and she is ok with the noise . Now to to walking i was really bearing her outside sat down until she was calm just let her smell on the meat i had with me and stood up walked away to the end of the leash and sat down first she wanted to go back home so i just sat where i was and called and waited until she came to me then i gave her the meat , let here calm down stood up and repeated the same procedure a couple of times later i just stood up and gave her some meat . Extended to a longer leash and walked away in 2 days she was happy to go for a walk . I don't know you're dog but most likely she is just like mine very scared and insecure so it will take some time and a lot of training . Now my dog is 4,5 month old and she is happy to jump in a car for a ride or a bus/train , or go for a walk . Still afraid for the vacuum cleaner so the vacuum cleaner is standing in the middle of the living room and today she did eat a treat from the top of it , next step is to turn it on while she is in the kitchen (eating) very very short and i am sure that in a week i have to ask her to move so i can clean where she is laying . Ok maybe it takes 2 weeks or a month but i am sure she will learn to accept the vacuum cleaner . Just take small steps and have patience and she will learn that it is OK .

Now its a bit better and isnt scared of other dogs but more interested and playful..

Maybe you've already tried this but dried lung treats are the treats that i have never seen any dog refuse to eat. Not even the shyest/pickiest. Plus they are low in calories. I also know some people who never feed their dogs at home. They only get food as a reward.

Ricarda Ladira Yeah we've tried anything from freeze-dried liver/lung/rumen to cooked chicken, raw salmon, lungemos (ground lung with beef and pork), raw cod roe, liver paté... he eats stuff like pig ears and treats at home chilling, but in any training situation, outside or inside, he doesn't care. Glad my own puppy will do anything for a bit of kibble, lol! Very easy to work with.

sorry, but all the professionals I discussed with they all agreed that harness (no matter how cute) its not the way. A neck leash is the way to train and relate with your dog, not only because of the problems with a harness, but also because in nature, dogs (wolfs) control through their neck; it's more effective and also more logic for them.

You can use a marker sound (word) instead of clicker. I find this better anyway your hands are free plus a clicker makes two clicks (when you press and after releasing) that could mark the wrong behavior.

I taught my dog Gutchi rather than training [to get treats]. it takes more effort but you end up with a confident, strong willed and happy go lucky dog who thinks for herself, this was done by giving her choices all the time, like four different leashes for the different directions and letting her pick which walk she gets. Now she just uses one leash but she still makes all the decisions and she loves it.All the best.

Great video! Goes against some things that I have learned, but also explains why our dogs have been lagging behind in some areas of leash walking. We have two Standard Poodle 10 month old litter mate boys. I do the training with one dog at a time, but they love being together too. They are very in tune to the other. This is what I find MOST PEOPLE DONT’T GET OR Just Don’t care I use to train Dogs and Horses with THE CLICKER. FANTASTIC WAY!!!! It really helps with helping the animal to ‘Get it’. A great tool. And you know you can do a ‘Verbal’ click with your mouth if you don’t have one or forget one. Which worked great with my horse. I would ‘Click’ and my horse would come running to me as she knew with the clicker she got a reward! A great training tool. And your gift for training is a God send. These animals are from our Great Lord. And we all will be held accountable for how we treat them!😊🙏✝️

For Katie and everyone who promotes prong and shock collars. You don't see agility handlers mistreating their dogs with these "tools". I suggest it's because in agility you are giving the dog something it values and loves to do. A completely different mind set to training: team work, "play", having fun, positive reinforcement, creating and deepening the bond with one's dog. But what I've found most important is to allow your dog to not only make mistakes, but to not be AFRAID of making mistakes. When you get to that point in training - you can up it to Choice Based. It is awesome to see a dog offering behaviors with a happy grin, soft eyes, and wagging tail. Prong and shock collars do NOT bring out this behavior. To the contrary they do the opposite. Keep up the good work Kristin Crestejo! :)

I used these techniques on my first dog but my newest puppy doesn't care for treats when she's outside, I ended up using a front clip harness since the only thing she wanted was to go forward. Of course it also helped that my other dog knew how to walk so showed the good behaviour and was kind of like a role model but now I have 2 dogs who I love walking!

I agree. Food doesn't always work in certain situations, so we can see that the environment is higher on the reinforcement scale. So you would need to do exactly what you're doing, premack principle, the dog doesn't pull (due to the harness) and gets to move forwards :)
