Takes lots of work, and it can be so tedious, but as soon as you start seeing it working, it immediately becomes worth it. We’ve been working with our dog on leash walking, as she had a horrible problem with pulling on leash, but as soon as that started clicking with her, it was very evident, and so exciting. Such a happy moment for all of us to see the progress. She wasn’t an easy 30 minute success like with Sandy, but everything in that video helped so much that after just a few sessions she now just needs the occasional tug to get her to stop up for a second and walk to heel. We have just been using two clicks of the tongue to call her back with the tugs and always get eye contact with it. Such a great thing to see the fruits of your labor

My puppy was from a farm. Came to me scared of cars/traffic. Was very scary, she worked her way outta her collar and ran scared to death. I finally caught her and thought I have to fix this in a safe way. I can't have a fearful dog living in the city. I bought a semi choke collar, so she couldn't get out of it. I did exposure therapy and walked her on a busy road every day for 2 months. Lots of praise and reinforcement. She is now oblivious to cars and focuses on me. So happy we nipped that problem.

She comes back but she thinks the world is her playground. She had to learn her name as well. It’s definitely not easy trying to train a dog that has lived its life with others and has bad habits.

Positive training is not about "bribery" if you using food as a bribery you're not doing it right......... food is reward and not a bribe. Even if I got the food on me, he doesn't always got to get it... food in positive training is also very quickly fazed out. We can use other than food rewards too, like a praise, game etc...

Mine is definitely a leadership thing 🤣 I call her to come back and she looks at me then turns back around and continues what she’s doing but she does listen 70% of the time 🤣 I’ve noticed even with basic commands like sit sometimes she just stares at me when I tell her to sit. It’s like she’s never heard the word before 🤦🏻‍♀️. (We do trick training all the time so she’s 100% confident with the command sit 🤣) I love how you explain the two sides ❤️

Always remember anything you train takes tons and tons of repetition. It has been estimated to be 600-1000 reps for a dog to be rock solid in a behavior. And Rock solid means the dog is accurate around 98% of the time. They are after all dogs, not robots. And every dog learns at a different pace. So don’t get frustrated when your new puppy seems to be taking longer than your last dog. And those repetitions need to start in very simple terms (dog close by on a lead) increasing to long line. Then go from your house to your back yard on a long line to a larger area. Then increasing the distractions. I was taught something called distance-duration-distraction. Every time you change one of those items, the other two must be the same or easier. So if you are teaching recall in the back yard 20 foot long line no distraction and you go to the park (more distraction) you need to shorten the lead (say to 10 ft) and work up slowly from there. If you are teaching down with you 10 ft away for 5 min in the kitchen, and now move to 15 feet, then your time should go down to around 2-3 minutes. Gradually work back up to 5 min. To train a dog It takes time. Repetitions. Rewards. Corrections. Consistent communication from you to the dog. But the feeling of walking your well mannered best buddy down the street and having everyone comment “how did you teach him to walk so nicely?” is really, really cool.

@@valknudtfarms4048 I'm sorry you've been struggling with that. I have a family member with MD, so I can appreciate how challenging it can be. But you're out there working with the dog, despite that, and that makes me so proud to hear. Your dog found himself a good home and a great owner. Keep up the great work. One thing you might consider is using a 25 foot leash and tying it to something outside. Then let the dog sniff around, and call him back. That way, if he doesn't respond, you can grab the leash and give it a small tug, just to remind him that you're there, and then treat him. Also, try slowly walking backward when you call him.

My dog was very shy and anxious in new environments. After much training, classes and research, I've realized my dog didn't see me as a trustworthy leader and so whenever we're out in new environments, he didn't know how to act and didn't look towards me for guidance on how to act. After reinstalling a better leader-relationship, when we take him out and he's in a new place, he looks up at me for direction/guidance. It has really helped his anxiousness and shyness. But clearly we still have a lot more to work on lol

I brought in a former police dog handler to work with me one on one to work on his aggression (fear induced) etc and setting his boundaries and also reassess my control and calmness. I’m reluctant to change my recall word, as “come”works 100% of the time when he’s on a long lead, and 95% we are alone with few distractions. When there are distractions and distance is where I’m having a lot of problems. My 7 month old puppy whom I’ve had for two months loves strangers and other dogs so much it’s nearly impossible to get recall in those situations. What should I do?

@@adamsalazar8214 Change the command as suggested for 100 per cent. Why be happy with less?? Identify ALL the elements he proposes including practising at home in a hallway. Set up practice situations using friends in a safe environment before exposure to overwhelming stimuli perhaps. Maybe write out Wills instructions to ensure all elements are being appled perhaps? Hope these thoughts might help??

Recall training is so, so worth it. We slacked off on training for our current dog. The pup we had before him, we did everything. He was also such a breeze to train. The new guy is stubborn af. Adorable, but stubborn. So it's been more of a challenge and we may have gotten a new dog a bit too soon. Looking back, now I can see we were still grieving the sudden loss of our first boi (who would have just turned 10 last month) in 2019. He was fine on a Monday, acting funny Wednesday afternoon, stopped eating Friday night, and gone by Saturday afternoon. Anyway, it really is so, so nice to have a dog you can let off leash and rely on to still listen. Our other dog is a good listener. A little neurotic but listens when it counts. So on the rare occasion that the gate to the backyard has been left open by accident, we have one dog we panic about and another we just holler for and her head pops up around a corner right away. Lol! Though I will say, the stubborn lil turd dog is too oblivious most of the time to notice the gate is open. Both times, he's just been off in his own little world in the backyard.

There's a third issue. Instinct. Sight hounds (Greyhounds, Borzoi, Whippets, and such) will follow their instincts that will very often win over their obedience. I don't know that any leader can win out over the dog running after a moving object. The same goes for many of the guardian breeds who don't traditionally rely on humans. I agree with you about the leadership role and setting the dog up to succeed, but expecting a guardian breed to behave like a Labrador is going to lead to owner frustrations.

It is very much ignoring you. If your dog understands the command and still chooses not to listen, that is ignoring you. I very much understand dogs with high/ strong instincts. But following your commands needs to be more rewarding than following instincts. Like he said, it's about your dog respecting you.

Thank you, this is very interesting. Just got a rescue puppy of six months, first time out and letting him off the lead, my husband stood still, I continued to walk with dog still on the lead. After a few moments, I turned, let the lead go and my husband called the dog, got a good result. I’ve just noticed that the dog responds to my whistle, one I use with my fingers (famous for doing that without a dog). So, I’m going to use my whistle in the house and garden as you said, thanks again, fingers crossed it works. P.s. he (the dog) does respond to his name when I call and I’ve managed to get him to sit before a treat, but the whistle in a noisy environment, I believe could be more affective. 😊

First off thanks for all of the hard work you put in to make these videos to help all of us knuckleheads out here !! I just recently went from fostering to adopting a rescue that is SEVERELY terrified of EVERYTHING ! While I have some skills with a dog like this, my last dog had similar issues, I know when things fail it is mostly, well all, my fault. 🤦‍♀️ Tipper is very attentive on lead, will stop, turn, & heel pretty well so far. We are just beginning to work on sit. I watched your video on going through doorways and have incorporated that into our normal program as well. I wish I we could have more fun in the house but he is so afraid of things...... I guess just being patient will be the key. Thanks again for your hard work !

I was going to use a higher value treat but I have realised that I have to create a stronger bond and more respect . I'm am getting papers to have my dog papered for emotional support dog. I watched a video of yours how to stop my dog from pulling on a leash. Well I have to tell everyone I am determined to get my dog ready for this life changing experience we are going to have. He has pulled me over before that's how bad it's been so I bought a pinch collar. Let me tell you it worked better than not and I wasn't be pulled off my feet but he would still pull. Okay I went outside with my doc and followed your steps omg it was the best walk ever and it only took about 5 minutes for him to get it. Now I'm not done with this technique but omg!!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!. I have to get a whistle but so far he will come but not every time so work to do here to but you came into my life at the perfect time.

And actually that's how the world works, you don't ask for a "demo" dish at the restaurant just to check if you're going to order it. @@alicef5107 I don't agree or disagree that’s why I asked for a demo. Some people are visual while others can read a manual. I don't think my "suggestion" was that off base. I'm not asking for his entire dog training lesson, just show me what you are talking about if I can't picture it. Restaurant and dog training are too different things. One is a Good and the other is a Service. My martial arts instructor invited me in for the first lesson, free of charge, to demonstrate the lesson. Some restaurants gives out samples....

love your videos..i have alot to learn..we have a cane corso , got him a month ago , he is now 10m, smart, but missed his socializing, so can be a bit reactive to dogs and people, but getting it little by little...i am getting a whistle to help with recall, but he is getting the "leave it" comand better now, thank you Will you are a hive of information..

I’m so glad you explain this in the video. Ever since I’ve really dived deep into learning about dog training I’ve really struggled with the “positive only VS correcting” issue. I’ve always had the idea that positive-only was the only way training SHOULD be done because it was “humane” but now that I’ve had my husky mix for over a year and he won’t stop going after small wildlife critters 🙄 and he’s terrible about ignoring me when he definitely knows what I want him to do, it became immediately clear that positive-only was NOT going to work with him. It’s really expanded my view to see that you really don’t have to do one or the other. You can do both! Treats/praise AND corrections. Which I should have realized a lot sooner but oh well, we’re here now. 😂 You explain that really well here and I think Tom on the Upstate Canine Academy YT does as well. He relates it to raising a child; would you let your child scream at a grocery store? No! Would you try and bribe them with an ice cream while they’re screaming their head off? Of course not. Letting them know a certain behavior isn’t acceptable (lunging, jumping, reacting negatively) makes complete sense when you think about it that way. I do hope that more people start to realize this. Thank you for this video! Edit: I wrote this right before you made he exact same analogy about the child and bribing them haha

Great vid I have a new puppy and want it to learn great recall as my past dog had amazing recall and I think we are getting there with the new puppy but using a long leash plus reward and it is working at the moment

Thank you for this information. As usual super useful. I need to purchase a whistle. My dog is a three year old rescue mixed breed dog with a lot of terrier in him. And although he understands my commands mostly chooses to do as he pleases. Only coming when it suits him.. we live in the country side so there are a lot of very interesting distractionsvfor him.
