In this week's video, I will be showing you teach writing skills to ESL students that will allow newcomers and beginner ELLs to be able to write an essay. I walk you through the process of applying the can do descriptors in a practical way that makes sense for the language . proficiency of your ELLs. Writing does not come easily to ELLs because it is the synthesis of all language domains. Using this writing strategy to enable our beginner students to begin the process of understanding how an essay is organized. Hopefully these tips will help you teach writing stills to your ESL students.

Thank you for your advice! I am a 4th grade homeroom teacher in a bilingual school in China. My biggest struggle right now is finding the time to help my lower English speaking students in the fundamentals of writing. I have some students that did not get the opportunity to develop the essential writing skills you learn in lower primary. So I am taking it all back to basics. I try to make the content as meaningful as possible, but finding the time to differentiate with my students is the struggle.

Dear ESL students: stop getting hung up on word forms, like what's a present participle, past participle, what's a gerund, etc. Verbs, adverbs, nouns, pronouns, and adjectives. That's it. Keep it simple. Watch TV shows like Friends and stop stressing over how English is written. And FFS stop using Grammarly, it's not your friend.

This is great but our level 1's do not read any ENGLISH whatsoever, so how do you do this with non English speaking students? Are you providing this in their native language?

You can use a key to accompany this paragraph with the highlighted words to look for in their native tongue with the English on the side. My Ells also use word to word dictionaries.

My students say my essays are simple. in Ilts they give the topic and a sample essay. Those sample essays sound written by a native Journist level.

As I said the problem I see with, let s say a candidate writing an essay is sentence construction so how do you teach sentence construction. The only thing I offer is " No you do nt write it like that, it looks better if you write this" St..Why? It s like when you put cream on your strawberies they taste better and look more presentable. What I do tell candidates is that I give them list of connecting expression. eg I would like to start by saying. From my point of view as a critic. It is necessary to discuss.etc etc. This is all bla bla bla. in other words B S = Bachelor of Science, but you know what I mean. but if you read an essay by a foriegn the examiner just might be impressed. So final question Can you actually teach writing if so what would you suggest for C level Advanced.
