@vidgirl4444 Number one, teach your dog a STOP command (video soon to come), this is a back up you ALWAYS want if a door is open at another house and your dog rushes out. When working for the street, use the curb or some sort of natural visual border (different shades in color) and repeat the same steps.

Thanks for your excellent videos! Can a young puppy learn this or does it take the self-control of an adult dog? My border collie puppy is currently 4 months old and we'd like to teach him to stay out of the bathroom where the cats' litter box is. Too much? Too tempting? Currently blocked with a baby gate. PS I'm sorry you get so many idiotic troll comments; you deserve better.

+Kristin Crestejo, CDBC Great video. You state in the opening this can be used to train a dog not to dash out the front door. Question: How do you then teach the dog to go out the front door when you want him to? Would you use a release command like "okay," similar to releasing a dog from the 'down' command? Thanks for the help.

If you want to use a border like that you will need cues such as a release word "okay" and a stop word like "out"

@azmauigirl Thats a stay command you want. When you're wanting the dog half the time in a room and half not it's best to teach the stay or out command. This can get VERY confusing as it may not always be implemented when you're not around and training wouldn't work.

2nd part: Your dog should know "stay" but you can also use a leash to stop it from leaving the house. Before you both leave the house, wait some time, say stay and then the okay command and leave the house. If your dog understands this, try it with throwing a toy outside, keep him inside with stay until you don't have to say anything and the dog stays itself. Leave the house with the okay command with your dog and it can have the toy. Sorry, my English is bad but I hope it helps.

I taught my adult Border Collie mix not to go past my property line on my driveway with one or two tries. Walked her up to the line, turned around with both arms out and said NO. She never went past that line again. It might take a little more work with the new 7 week old puppy though. They really don't like being inside a fence so something like is necessary. Amazing breed.

Hey! Awesome video, and very beautiful bc! Is her fur naturally that length? I plan on getting one but I only find breeders where the dogs have very long fur especially on the chest and legs. I think your dog is the perfect example for a pretty border collie! Have females shorter fur than males? I don't really care myself how the dog looks, i just want one because I love teaching dogs tricks and want to have a dog that wants to learn, but my boyfriend really dislikes the bulky look of very fury dogs and I'd like him to be happy as well.

saza hahaschi Honestly every BC is different and has different coats. Luna's has turned out very shaggy and crazy now that she is almost 6 years old. But I've also worked with Bc's that have short coats and thinner. Sex has nothing to do with coats and sometimes not even size!

You're just wonderful with border collies!! =) I have a border collie lab mix, but she has the brain of a border collie. After watching some of your techniques, I'm so excited to get a clicker and start teaching her this!! She just loves to run up to everyone who comes in the door and swing her butt at them. How do you teach your dog that the line is only enforced sometimes (like when people are at the door) and not enforced at other times?

My dog, a 10 month old pit bull loves to run off of the back deck when he see other people. I put up a baby gate and he just jumps over the gate, more athletic than I thought a pit bull would be. Would this help with this behavior that might get him hurt? If not, do you have another video or training method that would help?

would it be confusing for my dog if I teach her a border and then ask her to cross it later. for example if I have her in the living room and the only way to get her outside is through the kitchen but I have put borders to the kitchen can I call her through without confusing her?

you would teach your dog a cue meaning it can cross like the word "ok". you teach it, it can't cross without permission. my dog learned almost in one day it can't cross unless I say OK. but each dog will take a different amount of time. look up boundaries, property and perimeter training videos to get more ideas (I tend to look at multiple videos of the same trick to see what works with my dog

I am starting a new job at a nursing home and my golden retriever therapy dog NEEDS to learn new barriers not to cross especially not to enter the dining room. This is a very informative video! Do you have any other tips as she is VERY food driven and residents may try to invite her into the dining room.thank you!!!

The poor dog will get confused. You'll need to watch her otherwise you can't train that. If one is telling her to come and you're saying not to, but you want her to engage with the residents at other times - very confusing and not very fair. I would watch her and the residents and if you see her going in, tell her out. If she's already in, tell her out. If she's constantly being booted out of the room, she MAY get the hint if you're consistent enough. But this will take a lot of time and patience, especially when people are working against you (non intentionally).

Hi from France and first of all, thank you very much for all these great and useful videos. I've been working with my 5 month-old german shepherd on not following me in the kitchen and staying out of the room when asked. I must say the trick works quite well when the session is 'in progress'. Starsky gets he is supposed to remain out of the room but as soon as I put the clicker away (and the 'treats' as well ) he seems to forget it all. He keeps on following me again even though he gets out when asked. The other 'side effect' is that when we're finished with this work he's sratching at the closed kitchen door. I guess he's associating the door with food (treats). Is this a normal stage that will fade away or did I miss a key point in the training ? I reckon you get many messages and questions but I'd really appreciate if you would be as kind as to get me an answer.
@Krissykris1468
@Krissykris1468 6 жыл бұрын
So what's happening, is you're stuck in the automation phase, you need to generalize the behaviour when the treats are not being shown and clicker isn't around. Try also, asking the dog "out" when they're in the kitchen and walk towards the dog, shooing them gently. When they're across the boundary, back off the pressure. If the dog comes forwards, step towards and shoo them with your body (body blocking). REpeat. When the dog is out, you can grab a treat and toss it!

Kristin Crestejo, CDBC Thanks. Things have evolved and he's now staying out most of the time, even not following me into the room. 👍

with behaviours like this you don't need treats and they can sometimes end up being counter productive. it's fairly simple to train this, and then just rep it out. tie a lead to something to stop the dog from following you in - rep it out heaps. once your dog stops pulling on the lead and sits at the barrier, train with out the lead - rep it out heaps. i do it all the time when introducing my dog to new barriers, i can teach a barrier to my dog in under 30 mins now.

Actuallly the problem has been solved with treats. I have just given treats more randomly and in the end only when he didn't even try to come in. Just when I left the room. Tanks

don't put anything down or build any walls etc, simply keep backing your dog up to were ur happy for him/her to be and if dog steps over ur invisible border simply be patient and keep backing said dog up to the invisible line, and as long as you have patience i promise you will se result in the first day and from there on just reinforce it a couple of times each day, the best one to start with i found was the border i wanted my dog to stay behind so he could not rush to greet my family or friends as soon as they got in the door, explain to your friends and family what your doing and ask them to have patience also and in the end it will be a win/win situation, you will have a more gentle obedient dog that greets your visitors once you invite him/her o greet and they won't have a big dog jumping all over them......use common sense and take your time is the best advice me thinks.....oh and u don't even have to speak either, your dog is more than capable of understanding your hand signals as well..............#really clever animals

Sorry for my English, I hope you understand. My dogs do exactly what you want yours to do and it's easy for the dogs to understand. They need to learn that they're only allowed to leave the front door WITH you and not by themself. Allways say the same word when leaving the house with your dog like "walkdog" it's like an okay. Take care that you leave the door first and your dog only after you gave okay. I have to write a second post.

Sara V That is a very difficult task because it's not consistent. One can go and the other can't? Very confusing for the pups. Try to make it the same rules for all to make life easier for all. You could train what youre asking but it will take A LOT of training and supervision that every time that pup tries to go in, you call him or her out and reinforce the outside.
