So great to see the love, joy, enrichment, stimulation, confidence, bond and so much more a Malinois like Arih gets out of quality training like this. Easy to see how advanced she is in how she picks everything up so quickly. Very important for this type of seriously high energy breed to keep their bodies and minds so active.❤

I agree completely. So many content creators follow their comments for just the first few hours, or some even for the first day, and then never reply or react to any later comments so I presume they aren't reading them. Maybe they're creating so many videos and getting so many comments that they cannot interact with their followers. If so, that's great for them. But it is always great when a content creator responds to anything just to show he's still reading. Then, if he chooses to not respond to our post (my post) then I assume it was that he didn't have that answer or the question wasn't interesting to him - and that's his choice. Just seeing and knowing that he's reading them means I might get my questions replied to - if I do my part to make them interesting enough for his channel.

Love these videos! We are finally getting around to teaching my coonhound scentwork with these! We are on day 4 now, and one thing we are struggling with is the dog occasionally overlooking the scent. This is happening mostly on our first few searches. We are using birch odor in an odor tin and doing some work outdoors and some indoors. The boxes became far too easy for him - he wouldn't sniff each one but as soon as entering the room, he would run directly to the correct container with odor. So we are doing field searches at this point!

@@NateSchoemer She was. She originally belonged to a US Navy admiral who was stationed in Belgium, where he bought the dog and where she got all her training. Great protection for his house. When he moved back to the USA he and his wife separated and I ended up with his dog. Later, I moved out of the state, and had to leave the dog with his ex-wife and the dog died soon after, of a broken heart. So, Doberman Pinscher dogs are not notorious for showing affection, but she would lay on my lap or lean very hard into my leg wherever I went. She loved me. I have two German shepherds. I swear they must come out the womb wanting to do this. We have never formally trained them to “find” anything but they can! Our female is the one who did it first and she’s taught our make without any prompt from us. If someone has weed….she goes nuts and barks and barks. Head butting the spot or trying to dig. She does the same with mice (we had some move into our chicken coop and she destroys them and we haven’t had a problem since having her). Our male joins in but I don’t think he would seek it out of that makes sense. If I point to things with my stick….she sniffs it like a police dog on tv does and if she doesn’t find what she’s looking for she comes and sits back by me and looks up like “what next” lol. Wish I had time to teach her to do more. She’s so damn smart. Our male is too but they are different lines. She’s a working line and he’s a show line. He’s less excited about working lol. He likes to just look pretty. She is all over when we are doing something in the yard and we don’t even ask. If our kids are hitting softballs off a T, she brings them back. Over time she realized we put them back on the t so if no one is there with a hand out she drops it right at the t or has even tried to put it ON the T. She’s my baby.

She also can sniff out rabbits, which we have a lot of in my area. I’m hoping one day, when me and her move out of my parents home and into a place in the woods, she can help me catch rabbits to eat. @wormworm5802 жыл бұрын
“Quick” (not really) question about rewards in scent work-do you find using a treat impacts a dog’s sense of smell? I assumed this was the case considering my first attempt in scent work was not super successful, and I used treats there, although my dog was only 10 months there and possibly just didn’t have the same working drive and repoire with me as a handler. Second attempt starting fresh and I’ve been using a combination of toys and affection, but my pup is still not very toy motivated. Used treats for some non scent based actions like pressing her nose up against the scent jars but that’s about it. Affection works well only if she’s in the mood for it. Ultimately she is a mix of mostly herding breeds like kelpies and cattle dogs so I don’t expect her to be on par with a traditional cocker spaniel or beagle, but using treats now and again might help. Mind you, she is progressing pretty well for her lack of instinct in this area. She enjoys it now that I’ve taught her how the game works, but again, she’s a very sight oriented dog. I’m moving the target odour containers into new part of the house now and she’s picking up on drawers and cabinets pretty quickly-teaching her to search everything, not just the things that she’s used to finding scents in. I did find a toy that she really likes which I’ve been using recently, it’s a rubber ball on a rope with a bell. I’ve been keeping it exclusively for scentwork-we have her coveted special training toys, but this one is on a whole other level. Hoping the novelty sticks around. I think the bell is hyping her up even more as she associates it with play time, so getting a noisy toy might be a good tip for less toy motivated dogs.

Nate, I have seen in a few of your videos that you will use both a break and a free command. This video is a good example. I am really new to dog training and your videos have been a great help but I am having trouble finding the distinction between the 2 commands anywhere. Is there one or are you just using them as variations of the same thing(terminal marker)? If there is a distinction what is it and how do you train for one over the other? I watched your video on terminal marker vs. continuation marker but there is no mention of a release marker in that video which is what believe I have heard you call the free command.

I struggle with prepping fancy raw food for my dog but I’ve figured out a system to make it really easy. Buy a good pet mince blend in bulk and spoon it into silicone muffin bar trays, then freeze. Once frozen you can pop them out and keep them in a freezer bag. Put a brick in your dogs bowl a few hours before feeding time and keep it in the fridge so it can defrost, and after feeding put another one straight in and refrigerate again so the next meal is always defrosted and ready to go.

Is Free your release command that allows the dog to do whatever it wants? Because just after 9 minutes, you tell the dog free, and then the dog lays down and you give the dog a correction, seemingly for choosing a free activity other than what you wanted. Or is Free a command to come to you and get a free treet?

I would use the leash cue to teach most behaviors and then I would reward with toy or praise. The basic obedience series is designed to be watched in order. If you want to have a clear understanding of dog training and develop the essential skills needed to fix the majority of issues that dog owners face, start with episode one and work your way through. In addition, you’ll discover a greater relationship with your dog, as you now have the tools to address the bad behaviors that may have frustrated you or pushed you further away from your companion. I believe that improving the lives of dogs, along with their owners, is the most important thing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZSbmYtqoah6n7s I hope this helps! :)

@@NateSchoemer oh thank you so much! Okay I'll watch your videos from the very start. It's just that I really don't have much time for my dog. But because of quarantine I can now spend my day with her. Hoping that I could teach her like you do to your dogs. Btw, just the basic obedience would be enough for me so that it would be convenient for us in our house.

My pleasure! Yes, the basic obedience will give you a strong foundation for your training. :)

Thanks! I like to use freeze dried dog food. With a puppy or a new dog in training, I will often start with a high-quality dry food during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. If I don't have enough time for a training session, then I soak the kibble in water or raw goat milk and stuff it into a kong or raw bone, then freeze it. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. amzn.to/2W88zMf Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed and then use the freeze dried dog food while training

My dog is more toy driven than food/treat driven…like, she could care less about food but LOVES a ball. Can I quick reward with something other than treats?

Why do you use the elevated platform ?
@NateSchoemer3 жыл бұрын
It makes the training a little more clear to the dog. :)

Hi Nate, have you any suggestions for a platform if you don't have one specially made as above? Could you use a mat? Thanks

Question for you, Nate: could I theoretically use this method to help train a Service Dog to detect my seizures via scent?

What age do you recommend starting a GSD puppy at?

I like to start training when the puppy is 8 weeks of age. 😁🐶🐕

Nate Schoemer for scent detection? I started following your basic obedience series with my puppy a few weeks ago. It’s been amazing so far. Thank you for the awesome videos!

I have a weird question- I’ve taught my malinois mix how to sniff things out (I just give him a scent of what we’re looking for and then have him look for it in the house by saying “where is it”) and he does that but I don’t know how to teach him to alert me that he’s found it. He finds it and then stares at me waiting for his treat. And then I want to take that skill and teach him to alert me when my (coming soon) baby soils his diaper. I want him to do it not on command, but on his own and then bark at me or something instead of just staring at me lol. My question is, how do I take that poorly taught skill and turn it into a useful one?

None of this works with my mal. I think I might have a broken one. He's 2 and the energy is just so overwhelming. He never sits still for a second
