That's great information. Thanks. We got 11 australorp birds online and 7 of them were roosters. Do know how to tell the difference at a couple of days?
@MrAnimalFarm8 жыл бұрын
Hi, it is really pretty impossible to tell at a few days old unless: 1) You get them vent sexed which is typically only done at hatcheries. 2) It is an autosexing breed (you can tell by their color at hatch if they are male or female). 3) Some people have success with feather sexing. We have not used this before. My understanding is that only certain breeds can successfully be feather sexed. Some breeds you can start to tell sex faster. For example, the Marans in the video above. Since we breed these and see them all the time, we can usually start making good guesses around 4 weeks old and know for sure by 6 weeks. Some breeds, like Silkies are way harder. They have smaller walnut combs, and can be almost impossible to know until they are several months old.

@@MsKala88 / @TheUtahraptor Channel, this can happen if one of her oviducts fail. Chickens can "change gender" from female to male due to hormone changes after the failure of one or both oviducts. The resulting cockerel will be sterile, but can serve the social purpose of a rooster (guarding for predators and keeping peace among the hens). Kind of the best of both worlds really.

If they have wing feathers, spread their wings out and a pullet, female, her feathers will be in a line across. This is so when she grows up and has babies, she can cover them easier. If the two rows of feathers at the edge are one long, one short one long one short pattern, that will be your cockerel, male chick. You can even use that when they are very young because they will have their feather shafts in the same pattern. To me, the feather way is the easiest and it works for all breads due to it being a poultry makeup for what a hen does and that is provide warmth and protection for her babies.
