I was going to say this. It seems often introversion is directly correlated to shyness or social anxiety, which this video also leans on. Being an introvert doesn't mean you're out of control with your feelings when you're in a crowded space, it just means you get exhausted faster and feel a need to rest your mind by being alone.

I used to think that being an introvert was something that needed to be overcome. People would say, “One day, you’ll come out of your shell.” “One day, you’ll learn how to be outgoing.” The problem is that I believed them. But now at nearly 30 years of age, I realize that there’s nothing *wrong* with introversion. I’m not “just shy”; I’m quiet sometimes and that’s fine. Different doesn’t equate to wrong!

I personally like to think about this topic in terms of mental stimulation one can handle best. An introvert (like myself) gets overstimulated quickly and start feeling overwhelmed,meanwhile, an extrovert requires more outside input to function efficiently. Introverts may not be shy and feel quite open to a bunch of good friends, it's just that they thrive on concentrated focused energy as opposed to paying attention to several places at a time. Also, one should think for oneself by removing any outside impetus and really try to understand their subjective personality. We are more unique than we seem to know and first person subjective point of view conveys a lot. Hope that helps :)

There are multiple meanings of "introvert". I break them down into four primary categories: physical (first person/self), emotional (second person/companion), intellectual (third person/community), philosophical (fourth person/universal). Social anxiety, which is what Alain always talks about, including here in this video, is the emotional, second person, type of introversion, being cautious/fearful of one's companion's physical expressiveness. Physical, first person, introversion, the more classical type, is being cautious/fearful in one's own physical expressions. I'm that type, where I don't have a lot of energy to physically do things, and tend to be clumsy. Intellectual introversion is the sort of type who tends to let others lead and mostly sticks to the politics and ideas that they've been taught, instead of being weird and innovative in problem solving. This is less common as a term, and tends to be thought of more of a follower, or "nice person", than an "introvert". And finally, the philosophical introvert is what we usually call an "uptight" person, or a "worrier", as they don't feel comfortable with the universe, and what it's physically doing, as opposed to a "free spirit" or "go with the flow" type who just kind of works with the universe, and sees the good in challenging situations. Each of these is a separate dimension, so you can be an introvert on any of the four levels, or all of them, or any other combination. For the record, I believe Alain is physically, emotionally, and philosophically introverted. He's intellectually extraverted, though. Which is why he's always coming up with new approaches for solving his problems.

Although I like going to parties, hopping on to moshpits to the sound of rap music, hanging out with friends and going out occasionally, I am an introvert. My social skills are decent, or maybe less, but I can’t stand small talk. I am friends with a few people I can trust and most of the time, people will tell me that I am quiet and would ask me why so. The question I’ve been asking my whole life however is whether I am introverted since birth because I used to be an outgoing kid, although I was shy at first, but I’ve experienced bullying here and there and it caused me to distrust people. When my family immigrated to the States, it was difficult for me to talk with other people because I speak Tagalog and only understand a bit of English. Now, I just graduated high school and looking back at my life, I have made a few but trustworthy friendships in my life and most of the time, I was quiet. I know this is a lot but if someone can relate to this, let me know your story :), and if you have something to say about mine, do so as well!

1. People tend to judge the way you love them, by the number of hours you spend with them. But it would be much more fair, if they added to the equation, the amount of time you spend thinking about them too! If you met a friend on Monday and you are still writing down details of that conversation on Friday, it means that you are still innerly "paying attention" to him. It is an effort that you make on your own, but it is in the service of that friendship and will hopefully make it more profound. So basically, when people accuse you of preferring your own company and therefore being egoistic, they forget that when you turn to your inner world, you are in a place that includes them too. 2. The other day I heard an interview with the director of the movie Parasite, Bong Joon ho. They asked him from where he gets the inspiration for his movies. He gave the example of his movie Okja. He said: " Oh I just saw a pig". That's it! He saw a pig and then he saw a whole movie about it in his mind! Well, of course, not all of us are so creative. But some people who spend a lot of time in their own world notice things that we may not, and they find ways to show them to us too! ( In fact it would also be perfectly enough if we could for example, just manage to see the flower when we see the flower! But we are often too distracted and all over the place, precisely for not spending enough silent time alone.) 3. An introvert can help other people to save a lot of time.Take the example of a nerd who loves watching documentaries and taking notes. This is a weird, but beautiful story: A nerdy person meets a woman on a train who talks about a rare disease her husband has, to which the nerd replies: "Oh I saw a documentary about it not long ago, and I wrote down the name of the doctor who has a new approach to it. I could look into my notes and tell you his name." Here is the point: Many people aren't fortunate enough to have the time and peace of mind to discover new things in several different fields everyday. An introverted nerd who has that privilege and who is generous enough, may have a lot to offer. 4. Maria Popova is a wonderful example too. She spends most of her time alone, reading books and making incredible connections all across different disciplines: philosophy, psychology, art, science. Millions of people read her wonderful blog " Brain Pickings" and discover treasures that they themselves would never have had the time to dig up. 5. Ultimately whether we are introverts or extroverts, we have one thing in common: we all seek for "connection". This quote by Theodore Zeldin is the best description of what feeling connected feels like: " The kind of conversation I am interested in is one which you start with a willingness to emerge as a slightly different person. It is always an experiment, whose results are never guaranteed. It involves risk. It 's an adventure in which we agree to cook the world together and make it taste less bitter". Well if we wish to cook the world together, we will need to bring the ingredients from "home". And " home" is our solitude. 6. If you have people around who don't understand your need to be alone, you can share these two conversations with them. They are very profound and beautiful: - Susan Cain, "Introverts, Power and the Quiet Revolution", Good Life Project podcast- Pico Iyer, The Urgency of Slowing Down, On Being with Krista Tippett podcast Thanks a lot for this most consoling lesson and for the beautiful animation!

I envy people in lockdown alone. My kids used to go to school and my husband the office giving me personal freedom and time to be alone most days. The first six weeks I was trapped with a mother in law who didn’t respect boundaries and tried to take over running my household and parenting my kids. She would often barge in to my room when I was desperately trying to be inside my thoughts while meditating. I had to seek therapy and I’m still coping with ptsd months later.

Thank you very much for this important lesson! I myself always described me as an extrovert untill some time ago. I always felt guilty for not wanting to meet up with friends sometimes, go to parties or concerts. It's not that I never want to, it's more that I often enough felt misplaced in the past. There always comes a moment when something in my mind clicks and I suddenly change from an extrovert to an introvert. I become kinda quiet, begin observing and listening rather than talking. It's like I'm having enough and need some time to regain energy. But I never thought that this is an okay thing to do. I hated myself for that. It was not untill my ex girlfriend broke up with me two month ago and heavily criticized and humiliated me for who I am. I felt so deeply hurt that I realized something's gonna change if I ever wanted to accept myself again. This video was very helpful, like so many other videos on this channel. Thank you School Of Life for giving me so important insights to myself!

I find in this current time of isolation that the fact I'm naturally an introvert makes it easier for me to spend long periods by myself; but after a while I still miss some of the social contact I had in my life. It's always been that I take pleasure from the infrequent gatherings I attend, but I also recognise when they become too much to handle. Potentially against type in some situations I'm often the most outspoken person in the room, usually when I have ideas I feel I need to share, or something important has been missed in a conversation. I'm not sure where I picked up this habit, probably because it became rewarding to do when I was in education. I remember well the time I had a massive anxiety attack about the need to do a presentation in front of my teachers for part of my course, and essentially hid from doing it; but these days I don't struggle with that kind of stuff much at all, and to much larger groups. It's not something I find exciting, but I've realised the fear of the thing is so much worse than the thing itself. Small groups suit me better than large gatherings, and I rarely try to be the centre of attention. I've noticed that some people, often extroverts, naturally act as the glue that make groups of people come together and have fun. Trying to be that kind of person truly would be incredibly draining to me. Not being an extrovert doesn't mean you don't care deeply about the people in your life, and want them to be happy and fulfilled in whatever way works for them. You just might not shout out to the world how much you care though.
@LyndseyMacPherson4 жыл бұрын
I remember being "diagnosed" as an introvert as a child. It was subtly framed like a sort of defect. I've spent my whole life railing against it, with public speaking engagements, rehearsed conversation techniques, and generally painting on the face of an extrovert. I have to wonder how different my life would be had I been told it was a perfectly great way to be. Heh.

I used to try to change myself to fit into my extroverted colleagues. But only after I finally realized my introverted nature did I find happiness. Going out without anybody else to hamper your freedom is such a joy and enjoying peaceful weeks with no one to talk to but your dogs is paradise for me. I am grateful my few close friends accept that I can't hang around them that often but still nothing changes when we do meet.

I guess lots of people don't understand the term 'introvert' correctly. Being shy, being afraid of parties and people is all about social phobia/anxiety. Introverts are all right with everything, they just get tired of people quickly, they prefer to work on their own, they are concentrated on their inner world etc.

I am both extremely extroverted and extremely introverted. I can be the life of a party, talk to any stranger as if I’ve known them for a decade; and at the same time I love being alone, not talking to anyone for months, being satisfied and very happy with very little. I’ve been called a minimalist all my life. I can be ambitious for a few months and lack it totally for another few months. I seem to turn on a dime. Now if I had manic depression, this might explain my behaviour, but I don’t.... I think it’s a wonderful thing to live without being categorized. We all have uniqueness that go beyond labeling.

This checks all the boxes for me. Some variation in the environments too, not just reliant on a single algorithm based on a video explanation. Introverts can be confused with dyslexia for people who can't write or read in another complex format that supercilious extroverted people fondly point thier finger on the problem as a resolve for inability or It's just genuinely labelled for them for a future prognosis with no diagnosis. (Been there, done that)! For the workers who have to brave the world with the same condition bravo to you making it back from the front line out there! There is evidence/data that draws the bow back as being a repercussion of childhood difficulties (isn't that a cliche)! What clouds the genuine ill fated warriors in this mentally challenging yet fundamentally weird world The condition targets our social absence and replaces it in creativity. It's never going to pay the bills however if the world needs help, Never far away..... just haven't been out in a while. (Winter is killer)! Introverts are not a movement, a protest, a control mechanism! There is individuals that abuse this condition for reward/NHS contributions that confuses the outcome for genuine sufferers to get the help they require the most. I can never say: "your not on your own"

Its just plain wrong. Introvert/Extrovert has nothing to do with how loud you speak, or if you are brave and/or NOT shy. Introvert/Extrovert is how you process data. There are enough shy extroverts, who are loosers, as there are socially skilled introverts who are sucessful. This video is wrong, because it claims that SOCIAL INEPTITUDE is introversion. Which it is not. You are not introverted, you are socially unskilled and untrained.

Years later it dawned onto me: there are too many books to read, too many songs to hear, too much to know about. I realized that it's enough to be happy. There is no need to be happier or even 'the happiest'!
