Brother you just saved me a $200 service call, and gave me an excuse to get one of those nice app based thermostats. Plus it's my birthday today. It started off bad, but seeing that I saved at least $200, and learned a bit about my furnace, that's the best gift I've gotten all day.

I don't know ANYTHING about hvac..but recently had a recharge since i have a slight leak. I'm sure many have told you already but I just have to say, THANK YOU so much for all your videos. I've watched them to learn and understand what's going on so I can educate myself. You are doing the community such a service. You are concise, clear and don't spend your time wasted on technical jargon. IMO, that demonstrates how well you know and and understand what you do. Please don't ever stop sharing whatever you do, you are so absolutely appreciated by the community!

Jay, after replacing the control board didn't solve the no heat problem and numerous other checks using your vids, I verifieded with a paper clip at the furnace and then the thermostat that it is the thermostat that I replaced a few months ago either was bad then or more likely I didn't throw the breaker and ruined it. I have just ordered another Tstat. Thanks for all your help. You saved me again and never have had to spend the money on a teh visit

Thanks, Jay. Great video. It helped me to determine my thermostat is bad. I had a power outage this morning. When power was restored my ac fan came on blowing harder than usual. I turned the thermostat to off and the fan continued to run. Only after shutting off the circuit breaker did the fan stop. So I did your test using a coated paperclip and snipping off the coating at each end of the paperclip. I jumped from R to Y and turned breaker back on. Outside unit came on to cool. I have been a subscriber for months! Thank you for helping so many people such as myself.

Man, you saved me! My thermostat was bad. Weird because I bought a honeywell cheapo several months ago. What happened is I turned on ac for the first time and heat seemed to come on and so did the compressor at the condenser. I turn off the thermostat and seemed like 7 to 8 minuets before it finally turned off. Anyway, I jumped red and yellow and boom , my ac is throwing cold air. I will be at home depot in the morning. Thanks man for this video and all your videos. I learned alot tonight.

Great video. Thanks much! As a suggestion, I would first start with red and green wire (fan) with the jumper since there is no timer or limit switch on that circuit. By using the red and yellow (A/C) you might turn on the timer/limit switch because the A/C compressor has a high and low side for pressure and possibly damage the A/C unit. If you activate the A/C timer/limit switch, the A/C unit may not operate until the time/limit switch times out.

@robvoyles

RC and RH are separated to accommodate systems that have two transformers. If you only have one transformer, you terminate to either one and have them jumped together. Most stats will have a factory jumper already installed as most systems have only one transformer.

One very important thing he forgot to mention is NOT TO JUMP "R" to "C" or be VERY careful not to touch the "R" to "C" as this will burn the fuse on the control board or trip the low voltage fuse inside the furnace. In most cases you will not even know you did this as it will not spark or anything. The fuse is like a car fuse that sits in a slot on the control board or sometimes a button on the housing where the control board sits.

@essakadiri8577
@essakadiri8577 2 жыл бұрын
R is usually the hot wire with 24 volts and C is the neutral wire, so if they touch it is like putting a wire from one hole in an outlet to another in the same outlet !! but because the voltage is 24 and not 110 or 220, it usually will not spark and not electrocute someone.

My Symptom: Air Conditioning working fine with no Issues. But when I would turn on the heat I would get a wiring error on the Nest E103 W1. Note: the Compressor would short cycle in heat mode but not in cooling mode. After about 10 minutes of this I would get the crossed wrenches symbol on the Nest. This system has been working for 4 plus year prior to the error message. Love your AC videos! FYI I have a 5 Ton Trane handler and a Trane Model 4TWX8060A 1000CA Compressor. When I jumped the R1 and W1 to by-pass the Thermostat it blew the 5 amp fuse in the air handler. Not sure what I did wrong? However, once I got the fuse replaced I abandoned the thermostat by-pass test and re-did the R1, Blue Common, and W1 connections at the compressor and now all seems to be working. Thank you for all the helpful videos!!!

Thank you for this great video (and series) Jay. My A/C wasn't starting up, so after some investigation I determined that the major components in the AC unit appeared to be fine but the contactor switch wasn't engaging. I viewed your video on the top ten reasons for that not working and landed here. I jumpered my thermostat and sure enough the contactor engaged and the unit started cooling so I knew with confidence that the thermostat was faulty. As a bonus I found an unused fifth wire running to my thermostat that I was able to connect to common on the furnace control board so that I could get a WiFi enabled replacement that didn't require batteries (it might even be the same Honeywell unit you have pictured in the video). I should also mentioned that the unit I replaced seemed otherwise fine - the display looked okay and the furnace fan was still blowing (I did replace the batteries as a cheap test anyway but it didn't help). So it would appear that a single system is capable of failure on a thermostat without the others necessarily being bad too. Thanks again - I loved being able to figure this out by myself without making a service call (or buying replacement parts at random to see if that might be the solution).

You sir are a wealth of knowledge! I'm subbed! I am having these issues at present and came across your channel and have been watching the videos you posted. My furnace just started short cycling recently and I am trying to troubleshoot it with out calling for repair but that option isn't off the table. I have a lennox elite g50uh. I don't have the on/off switch at the furnace so I have to trip the breaker. I cleaned the flame sensor though it really didn't look that dirty as compared to what the videos have shown it can look like but problem remains. I will replace it since it doesn't cost much and see if that fixes it. Blower fan starts, the igniter lights,, I get flame but it turns itself off. It either turns itself off quickly or turns on but stops shortly thereafter. I've wanted to replace the thermostat to something a bit more modern (and I'm not sure if this is the problem).

You are the best on how you explain the process of troubleshooting. I have question for you. One Smart termostat Nest was set to Heating. But the system turned on the AC during winter and caused the evaporator to freeze. For troubleahooting:- 1. Y1 is removed from the circuit board at furnace, and removed the Nest thermostat face. Y1 still connected on terminal plate of thermostate. And It read 24v on Y1 at furnace side while termostate is not even covered. If Y1 is removed from termostate terminal, it has no voltage down the Furnace side Y1. I believed the Y1 is getting power at terminal plate of thermostat. Which means RC was creating direct connection to Y1. What do you think?

Great video. I am trying to relate your video to my problem, and I have a question I hope you would answer. My furnace issue is the main burners don't come on. I have a millivolt furnace and millivolt tstat (no AC), so my tstat has only a red wire (at RH), and white wire (at W) (and a black wire from RH to RC). I have 638mv on the gas valve between the TH to TH-PG, and also from TH-PG to PG. There is also a LIMIT in the circuit between the gas valve and the tstat. I put my meter on the RH and W screws on tstat's base plate - and read 0mv . SHOULD I READ 638mv THERE? I also put a jumper wire across the Rh and W screws. IF I should see 638 mv between RH and W in tstat, seems like my issue would be the circuit from the TH-PG screw on the gas valve thru the LIMIT and to the tstat? I put my meter on the two screws terminals of the LIMIT, and saw 0mv - so I think that means the LIMIT switch is closed. I also put the meter on the two spade wires going onto the LIMIT and saw 638mv there. Oh, one more clue, I can manually turn the main burners on by putting a jumper wire from TH to TH-PG on the gas valve. I'm not sure how else to test the circuit, and I don't know it the circuit is faulty, or if the gas valve is faulty? This is an intermittent problem for the last few days where the main burners don't light up. I appreciate any advice on how I can further troubleshoot my millivolt furnace.

FYI, It just started getting warm and my A/C stopped cooling/working , the Cool temp was set to 83 and the current temp in house was 85. The fan in the house was working but I went outside to see if the compressor/fan were going but it was NOT. So, it was NOT being turned on by the thermostat ( or the fan/compressor/capacitors were bad ). So, I changed the batteries ( 2 AAs ) and then tried to turn on the Thermostat but it stayed in the OFF position no matter what the COOL or HEAT setting was. So I went to chatGPT AI and it said to press the RESET button on the thermostat ( using a small screwdriver to push into the reset hole ). Voila , the Thermostat re-booted and I was able to set the Cool temperature and startup the A/C. So, with a good DIY attitude and Jay you can fix things too !

Geoff most new furnaces require you to hook up the yellow wire to the control board. This is to bring the fan on in high speed for cooling. If you turn the fan switch on at the stat it brings on a slower speed. The way it used to be is you hook up the yellow to the condenser wire without hooking it up to the control board.

You should look up heat pump thermostat wiring since it seems like that's what you have. Here's a short summary: RC is power to cooling, RH is power to heating. These two are often jumpered together (internally or with a jumper), as if you only have one R terminal. O or B is for the reversing valve O or B is the common. Just look what color wire goes to C in the furnace to confirm. Y is cooling W is heat G is fan

My HVAC Tech can't seem to find an issue with my furnace unit. (12 year old 1 stage unit house built west coast in 2008 attic unit which, I am not that flexible in maneuvering around) What I am experiencing however, sometimes (more often than not with heating)is the heat will come on (not always), then the fan will either be a delayed in turning off by 30 minutes by up to an hour and a half after reaching target temp. Or the the fan won't turn off at all unless I manually go to the thermostat to the force a fan idle signal be sent to the control board which will then turn it off around 15 to 30 minutes later when it use to be about 5 to 10 minutes after the heat cycled off. I have tried taking the thermostat cover off to turn the fan off but the fan keeps running. He did say their is a fuse in the unit but it is not blown and previous visits has ruled out rollovers, and high limit switch triggers. When I watch the thermostat I will hear the system cycle down when it does heat and reach target tempurature usually around 73 deg, but the thermostat fan will never switch to fan idle and 10 seconds later the fan kicks back on and stays on. Then after the fan cools the house down again the furnace will kick on and reach target temp and then sometimes the signal will successfully turn the thermostat fan setting to idle sometimes it wont. So I was curious if this sounds like an issue with my 3-4 year old SMART thermostat, or if something else might be causing the issue.

I have a NEST upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs is an American standard Golds furnace and the heat has been working fine and the AC worked fine at the close of summer. I just had carpet installed upstairs and the installers turned the heat way up as they said it helps with the carpet settlement. It went up to about 77 degrees and we usually keep it at 70. They left at night and we turned on the AC since it was so hot and the fan came on but the compressor downstairs did not and does not even hum when trying to turn on. I did your measurements from the last video and the relay measured .8 ohms. Ordered a new relay anc cap and new relay measures 14 ohm and cp also good. My control board upstairs has a 5 v fuse but it is not blown? I have 28V going to red terminal; and white terminal going to the NEST. Back downstairs, I pulled leads off the relay and measure volts there when AC engaged on nest and I only get 10V??? If I measure leads upstairs where 28 v is, it is 24V. As you showed, I event used the unused pair of wires going from upstairs to downstairs relay and still only 10V downstairs. I can manually push in the relay and both the fan and the compressor come on???? I even tried swapping the NEST from downstairs with upstairs. 24v transformer tests good. MY NEST downstairs is wired different than upstairs but both have been working for over 8 years. Downstairs AV unit is different brand. Control board? Why did 5V fuse not blow when original relay shorted?

Question I have is the temp gauge in the thermostat says when it reaches hot or cold set temperature. This was not mentioned. My cooling temp set to 75 cooling but will keep running way beyond that before shutting off. What is going on there? I manually shut it off and on...not the best. Thanks.

That sounds like a bad temperature sensor in the thermostat. Can't really fix that so the fix would be a new thermostat.

Thank you for the great video. I have a question with regard to the bypass. You mentioned that it is better to turn the furnace switch off After you find out if the thermostat is getting power to do the bypass. How can the motherboard gets power to turn on things if you switch the furnace off, am I missing something?

Great Videos! Very thorough and clear. I decided that some of those magnetic jumpers would have come in handy a few times so I ordered some. I was glad i thought to see if you had a link for them, which you did, so I cleared my cart and used your link instead. You deserve the support even if it is only a little.

I replaced a thermostat a few months ago. When I tried to get the heat to come on, it would not come in until I put a jumper from RC to RH. I only had a the red in RC to start with. Only thing I could figure was RC was power for cooling and RH was power for heating. The jumper did the trick, or seems to have. Have a question. The inducer motor seems to have a bearing making a slight squeak. Is this from not being on since last winter? Think it will go away in its own? Could I get by with trying apply a little bit if oil on it?

Thank you! When you replaced the batteries, did the battery contacts in the thermostat look corroded? Sometimes that prevents good contact so the thermostat doesn't power on. Otherwise I would suggest this video for more ideas on what to check: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJqWgH2rfMuUl8Usi=iZ0BnHCQVljp5YgN

Great informative video. I have question for you. I have a battery powered themostat. When I detach it from the wall I can test the back with a multimeter via continuity. My blower fan works when on cool but not on heat. There it continuity between the R power and G fan in cool setting. But when I switch the thermostat to heat, and the thermostat shows its on, there is no continuity between the R and G pins (thermostat not giving power to the blower fan?). Thus I think the problem is the thermostat. Can you confirm, or does something in the unit itself tell the blower fan to come on when its on heat?

@@ashovi After some additional research, the thermostat was fine and the testing was normal. (Mine is a gas furnace and the unit tells the blower to come on with a limit switch) So the blower for the heat gets powered differently than it would on AC mode. My problem was a fried connection on the curcuit board, I took lots of photos of it all wired up then u-wired it and resoldered the burnt connection path with solder and copper wire to make the path. If you suspect the board has a fried connection, sometimes you can see black as evidence on or around the board. Also check your 3 amp fuse sometimes they burn out. Also maybe check the limit switch, some videos I have seen say that it should have continuity at all times or its bad. So you might check continuity across it. However, this doesn't sound right as I would think it has to reach a certain temperature to activate, but I may be wrong. Hope you get er going

Oh I also forgot to mention, if your electric igniter is burnt out, you will have these same symptoms, so definitively check the igniter, if you have a furnace with electric ignition, it should come on within a min or two of flipping heat on and glow orange.

Thank your informative video, however, I do have a question. I have a thermostat that is sensitive to voltage. When I lose power, sometimes the thermostat works and sometimes it does not. I do have inverters generators as my backup power source. I do not need my furnace to provide me with heat during the winters, however I do need the fan to run to circulate the air/heat that my pellet stove puts out. My question is, if I hookup a switch to bypass my thermostat to just run the fan during the times I have to run my generators as my source of power, will that damage my thermostat if I have a bypass switch to turn on during these times to ensure the fan runs? Or must I disconnect my thermostat before I flip the bypass switch? Thanks!

My 3 amp thermal circuit breaker at the furnace blower keeps tripping. I checked the wiring carefully but did not see any visible wire break or shorted out. I had rusty capacitor at the condenser unit that I replaced. So I replaced the thermal breaker thinking that it’s bad. The fan ran for a bit then it started tripping again. I checked the voltage on the Y & G, and Y & R & I’ve got 27v but not between Y & C. The contactor switch when pushed, the outside ac unit runs fine. Then it tripped again. When I reset it I hear crackling somewhere by the vent tube coming out of the furnace. I saw a wire coming out of the zoning board to damper operator zoning switch. Could that be causing short circuit?

I had just installed a honeywell rth9585wf and I have a heat pump. The thermostat is set to 73. The room temperature display on the thermostat is at 73 but the fan kept running for hours. Outside temperature is 26 or 27 degrees. I've switched the fan from automatic to on and pulled the thermostat off the wall and the heat turned off in about a minute. Will this makes the thermostat faulty? Any advice or suggestions? Could it be the Outside temperature have something to something to do with it?

In the winter (about 4-5 months ago) my outside AC compressor was coming on when the furnace was on. I turned the AC circuit breaker off to turn the power off to the compressor as there was no other way to stop it from running w/the heater. (I figured I'd deal with it in the springtime. Now that it is getting hotter outside, I went to use the AC yesterday (turning the circuit breaker back on first) and neither the blower fan motor or compressor is coming on with the AC (will not work even in HOLD mode). If I switch the thermostat back to heater mode, the heater works fine. I did notice also, turning the fan switch on the thermostat will not turn the fan on, but again the fan works in Heat mode. Is this likely a thermostat problem (which I am guessing it could be)? Any ideas would be deeply appreciated. Also, I do have a voltage meter to test thermostat if I know the procedure. I would guess 24 volts from red and common. THX. The thermostat is a program-able Ritetemp model 8022C.

If my air conditioning is not kicking on and I want to check the thermostat do I just jump R over to Y or do I also need to tie in G to activate the fan? Or will jumping R To Y only, also energize the fan? This is for air conditioning now.

Thank you for your vids - super helpful and appreciated. I have a problem with no power to my thermostat but power at the board. Happened last night during a rain storm - probably unrelated but not sure why it would just stop working like that. The breaker is fine and the board is getting power. Thermostat connection reading 27 volts at the board. I also checked if the the water pump was working or if the float tripped anything but it appears fine. Any suggestions on what else I should look into? Regardless, thank you for these vids. Really helps to understand 👍

Question about colors of wire and the location on what letter the colored wire is placed. On my thermostat there is not a yellow wire. Only red, green & blue. Red on R Green on G Blue on Y No wire on W When I check with the wire red & green my fan does turn on. If I understand correctly that means it’s my thermostat front that needs replacing. I may have screwed up the compressor by checking (R) and blue (Y). Is it the letter location that matters? Or, did I wreck something by checking Y & R because Y has the blue wire? My air conditioner is controlled thru the thermostat. The Rc is the AC? If so how come there is not a colored wired attached? Ii know that G is my fan and it turns on. As shared I tried R & Y and nothing happened; I don’t know where to check the AC unit either only having 3 wires versus 4.
