Chasing down electrical issues on your bike can be a frustrating process. Eliminating components from the possible list of problems is the best way to track down your issue. We show you a simple way to check and see if your stator is not functioning correctly and eliminate that as a possible issue before moving on to other components. You will need a multimeter to perform the tests.

The first test was a short test to ground, this is to test if one of the windings have a short to the chassis.

So I’m not to confident in my results but my stator passed the continuity test and failed the ohm test. I tested the multimeter before starting and confirmed it was reading at a 0.00. Only one phase read at a 0.01. The other two phases read at a 0.00. I’m pretty sure that screams bad stator but a yes or no and some direction on how to move forward would be much appreciated. Bikes been kept in the garage for 3 months now and it’s just starting to get nice and cool out I’d love to get back on the road. Plz help lol.

Well mine stopped charging. I checked my 3 phase windings . Simular to the way checked a 3 phase motor. I checked each phase to ground . Shorted to ground. So I did not check the resistance of the coils no need . Pulled it down called jp ordered a stator . For sure in my option do what ever is necessary to make sure the bolts don't back out of stator . I added more blue lock tight and torqued it properly

Check your battery first, especially if you run a Buell XB12Ss like mine and have a fan that constantly runs, even after you shut the bike off for what seems like 5 minutes. This is good for the engine so it cools nicely and keeps oil passeges from clogging due to a hot motor and no oil circulation... but it sure tasks your battery something fierce.

Correct. He was a bit confusing. A continuity test only looks for a break in the wires, thus we use the beeper. No need to even look at the display. A beep means no breaks. No beep means break in the wire (stator windings).

If you have an alarm installed on your bike & you don’t keep it on a battery tender or you don’t ride enough, or you don’t disconnect the ground wire, the alarm itself will drain the battery drastically. This kept happening on my Sportster 48 with a gel battery. In this case, get a lithium battery with a built in tester (BTS) and it will shut itself off after it detects low charging levels.

I have a 2019 Indian FTR that drains its battery while riding to the point of it shutting off every one in a while. It never fails to cold start tho. Manual Says the stator should be giving 27 vac at idle and 34 at 2,000 rpm, but im only getting 20 and 31 respectively. Is my stator that bad and needs replacing ? The regulator maintained the Battery at 14.5v, but dont know if the low power from the stator overworks the regulator and thats when my battery drains while riding ?

One other thing to consider if the stator is not putting out volts is the possibility of the rotor not turning due to the rotor flange being spun, broken. Apparently it's a common fault with stock rotors on Evo's. My rotor broke at the flange but the motor/primary run fine as the rotor will just sit still while the broken flange of the rotor spins on the crank spline. It may rattle giving some indication there's an issue at certain revs but otherwise there is no obvious reason the stator is not putting out volts. The 6 magnets in the rotor may come loose as well. There is a replacement rotor with a rim holding the magnets in place to fix this issue.

So what if it passes the first two tests, but not the AC test? I have a 2010 sportster 48 and the manual says 13.5 V at 2000 RPM, but other places online say that's 13.5 V per 1000 RPM, which would be about 27 V. Either way, I'm cranking out 31 at idle and up to 45-50 at a slight rev. Is that too high? It shoots WAY up if I really throttle it. Is that a bad stator? Great video! But it doesn't state what to do if the voltage is too high or too low. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have a 2000 Ulra that just died on me yesterday taking a short trip. I charged up the battery last night and today I performed the stator test as you show in the video. My meter shows that the stator is grounded on both sides which you say the stator is bad, but it is putting out 38 volts at 2000 rpm which is good. I checked the continuity between the 2 and there is continuity which is good. I checked the voltage at the battery while the bike is running and voltage is low (11.8v) and does not rise when revved up. Do you know whats going on here. Can a stator be grounded and still produce the proper voltage?

I'd check the charging system in this order - battery, regulator and then stator. Simply because that's the easiest and most logical flow. Battery most likely culprit and regulator can be tested at the same time by checking if voltage is holding, dropping or surging. If they're OK, stator is next and most likely the problem.

@steadyeddie7453
@steadyeddie7453 2 жыл бұрын
The continuity test isn't the best test, as it only shows if there is a break (open) or short in the windings. It doesn't tell you the actual resistance in the windings, which is a much better test for the health of the stator. If you can find the specs for the correct resistance then you are golden. If not, then you can still do a resistance test across all 3 phases and compare. Look for all three within ~10% of each other. And 30-35 VAC (above idle) may be a good reading in your application. The spec should be published out there on the interweb. Cheers.

I mean it's sitting on the kik stand idling and it begins to make a hell of a kinda grinding sound with plenty of vibration. I thought it may be my cam chain tensioner. I replaced them but the sound is still there. It is coming from the driver's side of the motor and it seems to be coming from the front lower left hand side of my bike. Left is the driver's side of the bike. Could this be my stater. I can't think of anything else it could be. Since it does it in neutral while idling I am thinking it's not my clutch pack. I'm at a loss. Any help would be awesome. Thanx

You didn’t mention to make sure the point at which your testing for a short to ground, to make sure it’s a good ground, chrome bolts are not a good point to test. Also you use the ohm position to test for a short, not the diode position, that is for testing diodes, but it does kinda work the same.

My 08 fxdl wasn't charging the battery, I new it was probably the Cheap Chinese Voltage Regulator that Harley uses. I checked it sure enough it was bad, I also checked the Stator with confidence that it wasn't bad because the bike only has 14k original miles on it. After testing, sure enough the Stator was bad as well. Went to Stan's Harley in Batavia, NY, They wanted after tax 285$ for a cheap chinese voltage regulator and another 220 after tax for a stator that was also made in China. I told Stans to keep the parts I'll order quality parts instead, the girl at the parts Dept. pretty much treated me like shit after that. I went home and after some research I purchased a stator and a regulator from Cycle Electric, made in the USA in Ohio both came with a 2 year Warranty. Note as soon as I take it out of the Package Harley won't warranty electrical parts. Moral of the post, by quality parts stay away from Cheap Harley Chinese parts, they don't last and they do not put out the proper voltage or current for the other electrical parts.

Test a battery always under load! A battery without a load always give's nice 12Volt but under load the bad battery's wil betray themselves. Also the alternator, always test them under load, take a big power resistor of about 10 to 20 Ohm, but be carreful, this resistor in gona get hot!! I cool them always in a bucket filled with water. measure the current and voltage, if all three are equal then the alternator is ok.
