You just taught me that I have a Bad Stator... same as your bad one I had nothing on the Blue Leads.... Thank you.❤️

Thank you, expert! This is really the best useful video. My plugs, 2002-merc 75, 4 stoke, has just lost all sparks on the water. I am going to test it and find out if I need to replace it... and it is good to know I do not need to take out the flywheel to do so. I felt originally less enthusiastic about boating when it broken down on the water, but with your video/instruction, i regained my confidence now.. Thanks again.

If i have a bad wire, can I just replace it with a similar wire or do I have to replace the whole stator? And if so, why? Thank you very much for the video, very informative.

Evan - watch our all videos related to the outboard ignition components testing. Test each component individually. If one of the components doesn't pass the test, replace it.

Great video my question is I have a black wire as well what is that for and what should the readings be ? And also are the readings the same on a 150 hp motor thanks

A rectifier changes A/C power to D/C. A regulator controls the alternator to charge the battery and has no part in the ignition system.

Can it be tested like this while still mounted in the motor?

My outboard is running backwards - no telltale. Timing light shows spark timing on no.1 cyl is about TDC, but when testing the no.2 cyl spark is around 160 BTDC. This is causing the engine to kick back and run in reverse. Why is the number 2 cylinder firing so differently from no.1 cyl? In 1980, using the same flywheel, how did Mercury separate no.1 spark plug from the no.2 plug so that they could fire differently?

There is infinite resistance for your open reading. NOT "no" resistance. Open coil equals infinite resistance.
@OttoTheWeim Жыл бұрын
Came here to say this. OL (outside limits or overload) on Ohm setting shows extremely high resistance over the limits of the meter. Just as when not touching anything the “OL” is showing extremely high resistance through the air. (Not quite infinite since a high enough voltage can jump the air gap ie: lightning).

@deerslayer303B yes, you have to replace the stator!

I have a 1986 Mercury Classic 50 and my red to red white reads 175 and I found someone who said it should ready between 56-76 ohms. Does that mean my stator is bad?

Could this cause a 90 hp Mariner to misfire randomly at idle and at full throttle? Reason im asking is from cdi down has been checked or replaced on my fathers outboard but the problem continues.
@cleancarburetor5 жыл бұрын
yes, it can be done on the engine

my outboard has spark at low rpms (when I pull the pull cord to start) but as I increase rpms (with an electric drill, I tend to lose spark. any idea what it could be? I replaced the ignition coil and have the same problems, I may do this trick and test resistance on the stator.

Hi James, We'll need the engine serial number. Then go to this page for specs: www.outboardignition.com/page39.asp If the wires are rotten use some shrink cable in top of them. Then shake them while measuring the resistance. If the meter suddenly moves they are touching somewhere inside - in this case you have to replace stator.

The two blue wires on my stator read ZERO. Here are my findings, could you confirm if I need to replace the stator? Red to Red/White- 51.5 Blue to Blue/White- 0.00, Yellow to Yellow- 1.3. Thank you
@mikegoyette84694 жыл бұрын
Hey dearslayer303B, what was your motor doing to make you want to test? Curious because my motor bogs a little on throttle (runs perfectly otherwise), but sometime kicks in and works normal. I tested the stator and Red to Red/White is fine for resistance, but Blue to Blue/White has no resistance just like yours.

@@mikegoyette8469 it would act like it was only running on a few cylinders then sometimes would take off and run great. New Stator fixed it

@@deerslayer303B Awesome, that's exactly what mine is doing and I am getting infinite resistance on the blue wires so I am going to replace the stator as well. Thanks for the reply and I'm so happy you're on the water again running smoothly.

@ct17625 жыл бұрын
you need to do a cranking voltage test for the stator and timer base, as well as the switchbox/power pack to figure out what's really causing it to not fire. oddly, no videos on KZbin on cranking / running voltage test with DVA that i've seen.
@cleancarburetor6 жыл бұрын
