This is a computer controlled alternator. The PCM controls the ground side of the alternator rotor field circuit. I will be walking you through the steps involved in making sure the wiring is correct.
For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book.
Want even more diagnostic training? Whether you are a DIY trying to fix your own car, someone looking to become an auto technician, or a current auto technician that wants to get more into diagnostics, subscribe to ScannerDanner Premium www.scannerdanner.com/join-sc... There is a 14 day free trial.
On ScannerDanner Premium I will bring you right into my classroom at Rosedale Technical College. You will find page for page lectures taken right from my book as well as exclusive classroom type case studies. What is so special about these classroom case studies? I pull live problem vehicles directly into my classroom and we troubleshoot them in real time, using and applying the theory and testing procedures we learn during the classroom lectures. There is no better on-line training of how to troubleshoot automotive electrical and electronics systems anywhere!

Yet, again you came through Dan. I have that exact issue on my 2001 Jeep grand Cherokee limited. I first got the battery check at Advance Auto Part. The battery check out ok. I then had the alternator checked. Again, the alternator is good. Now after viewing to video, I'm going back to check the electrical connections and wires. I have to admit, this is not my cup of tea. However, I feel confident I can tackle the problem. Thanks for the experiences...😎🤜🏾🤛🏾

After a bit of testing, I concluded that I have a short in one of the field wires since I did rebuild this engine it seems very plausible that I could've pinched a wire/wires. I've had a P1391 code since I put the engine back in. I've replaced both cam and crank sensors 2+ and retimed it 4 times since then because of this code. My alternator was bad through out this whole process and I was gonna wait to get another one til I got the truck running. Since I found your channel, I've learned how to better diagnose the electrical aspect side of things. I think the short will have a role to play in the code I'm getting. Going ahead and putting a new alt on may have helped me find out where my problem is. Thank you for your videos

Excellent video, I could not test the plug at the alternator because of the type of plug, no place to insert a wire/probe, but I followed the wires through the harness and found the harness was touching the exhaust pipe, It appears someone who owned the truck before did something and put the harness on the wrong side of the exhaust, thus burning the wires. All the other tests worked as expected, so I am sure when I rewire this, it will work. Thank you, best video I saw out of all the ones I looked at.Your daughter is awesome !

Nice job Paul, I would have attacked this problem the same way with a dvom, a test light or Load pro and some jumper wires. Then verify your results with your dvom, and if you understand circuit operation which is half the battle, like you do, this problem is found and fixed in a timely and efficient manner.

@@ScannerDanner no problem. Hey, I have a question for your, somewhat in the realm of this video. I installed a "4,000" watt amp, which is actually around 1175 rms and have 4 12 in subs in my dodge quad cab. I've been have issues with dimming lights. I've done the big 3 upgrade, and installed a high output alternator in but the lights still dim when the bass hits, even at low volume. The headlights are aftermarket halogen projectors(I'm currently, meaning right this second, upgrading the wiring harness from the stock connector to the bulbs with 10 gauge wire, hoping that'll help with less voltage drop. I've read that the issue could be my VR, which is in the PCM. So my question is, would bypassing the computer and installing an external VR help me out with this, or am I thinking of it wrong? Do you have any other suggestions I could do? I tried installing leds bulbs but my fog lights were brighter. I'm sorry if it comes off as more of a car audio question but it's really I guess about voltage drop. I know I have enough amperage from the alternator. Oh, the lights look like I'm flashing people and it doesnt just happen at idle, it happens all the time, including driving down the highway. Thanks for any help you can offer and sorry this turned into that. I just didnt know where else to ask and I seen your replied lol

@@ScannerDanner I can't find your reply about the capacitor but I was using a 2 farad one(was told 1 farad for every 1000 watts rms) right next to my amp but that didnt really work. Like I said, I'm hoping upgrading these wires and harness will improve it. Who knows, maybe my thinking is all messed up lol. I used 1/0 wire for my big 3 upgrade, I didnt put that in my original post

I enjoy watching Scanner Danner videos and provides a great resource to learn from. If you guys want to learn this stuff though get his book and study it or take some classes to learn the basics first. You need to learn to crawl before you walk. This video is a prime example. My daughter has a Jeep of this same generation that she said didn’t charge sometimes and she would shut it off and start it up again and it would start charging. This uses the pcm to provide a duty cycle ground path to control the alternator output. That’s easy enough to see from the prints. What is not shown or might not be known is somewhere wrote to the pcm logic is that the pcm will shut down this circuit if it shows it is outside of a certain range. The pcm monitors this circuit from key on. You still get power, but no ground signal for the duty cycle signal. Back probing the ECM would have you think the EVR circuit is at fault, which is a common problem with these. Not wanting to leave anything to chance I measured the resistance on the field right at the alternator. I was reading over 350 ohms of resistance. Knowing something about electrical I knew this should only be closer to 5 ohms. While I don’t have exact specs I know this is pretty much just slip rings, brushes and wire to provide a field current. Rotating the alternator had this reading going really high to really low. Replaced the alternator based on that and everything is good. Moral of this store is get a good foundation of how things work. Also, just because something doesn’t show the results you expect it to. Verify everything else in the circuit is correct before you go replacing something like an ECM. Unfortunately we don’t know the logic the engineers have programmed into these things and the protections that are put into place to save a computer from destroying itself if something is out of range. Great videos though Paul. Keep up the great work.

You're so blessed! You have such a beautiful family! Watching this video helped me kinda solve or at least have a direction with an 06 Caravan that has the infamous lights-panel flickering problem. Testing the field control circuit I found that it is a power side controlled switch and it was flickering too (pcm power feed control). The ground was ok, it was constant, but when I went to check on the IPM connector that feeds B+ to the PCM it stopped doing it and I couldn't find the source. These intermittent problems are hard to solve... any clues?

Ah so voltage coming from the green wire from the alternator gets the circuit completed by the computer when it needs to tell the alternator to charge (ground side control). By giving it ground directly you full field the alternator. And that's only on alternators controlled by the PCM. Then you have alternators with external voltage regulators like old Fords, which you jump the A and F terminals to full field it. GM's I'm still doing my homework. I'm trying to learn now to full field them all. I loved the video. I was on the edge of my seat! Electrical problems used to intimidate me but now they're exciting like solving a mystery! I remember the time I traced an open in the taillights in a 72 El Camino to the harness under the seat, took the seat out and saw burnt wires I wanted to hi-five myself!

@@ScannerDanner Dude, I used to be intimidated by this stuff and I would have never thought I'd be so enthralled by the mystery of chasing down faults. Once you understand the basics it gets so much easier! Thank you again for this awesome vid.

Had squirrel damage on the wires in my Trooper, ate up over twenty some wires. Amounted to over $1400 worth of damage. After trying many repellents and such, finally got results using an ultrasonic repeller that is powered by the car's battery. After almost two years no more problems. But had three occurrences of damage before getting this unit. It was squirrels as they had a nest in there and were seen coming in and out of the vehicle.

I would have enjoyed seeing an ac voltage test at the alternator's terminals after you jumped the damaged wire. I'm wondering about overheated (and failed) diodes.
