Excellent video guys, excellent for the big companies out there installing chargers but with so many test sequences to do and over £2000 for the test kit and lead etc i do not think i will be branching out in EV Charger installs and testing.

This was my impression too. Still a good video,are all these tests now required as I have not seen other youtube video's (a lot of those who Gary has had in) do all these tests when installing a car charger?

Hi Ashley, EV testing is one of the MI3152 capabilities, Voltage drop, surge protection, power measurement, harmonics and are some of the other functions available! www.metrel.co.uk/uk/shop/EIS/multifunctional-testers/mi-3152.html
@markjohnson11064 жыл бұрын
Ashley the equipment shown in this video is available for between £1200 and £1500. And it doesn't just test EV installations but domestic, commercial and industrial installations and it does them quickly with its autosequence functions.

You won’t regret getting the kit, it’s fantastic. Get the ring circuit testing gadget box and now they do a 3 phase auto testing box. I do use a fluke on site as well but do get a variation on RCD test times. Both a calibrated but it can fail with the Metrel and pass with the fluke. Usually on 5x. Save up and even consider the Mi3155.

The only thing that trips me up is on the RCD test there was no instructions you have to switch between A & C modes. I know it should be knowledge but most of the other menus tell you what to do, there it just assumes you know what to do next

If we had a scenario where we had say 4 x 22kw 3ph chargers but some vehicles are only capable of taking a single phase charge. So potentially you could have 4 cars charging defaulting to 7.4kw max all on the brown phase. Would you be better to cross the phases to try and balance out the loads. Most new cars will take a 3ph charge but some will only take a single phase.

Thanks for the video, One question : Why the toggle switch of the PP is represented by Amps ? the PP is the proximity pilot and it should represent the position of the EV, the CP should represent the Amps because it's role is to control the charge current...so I think at the name plates CP and PP should be switched at the device ? ..

I wonder if the upgradeable software will take into account amendment 1 and the loss of PEN. I assume we will need to test this is compliant. Not sure how - the supply voltage is fixed and the meter measures this rather than alters it. Thoughts?

Good point - we'll try to find out!

efixx we don’t test SPD’s, so maybe not. Given the recent amendment, I understand that I can use PME earthing ... if... the charger has the PEN protection - it seems odd that we can’t confirm it indeed does and it works. #trustbutverify

Did you have an RCD at source here too? Did you just link out the primary RCD?
@daves46872 жыл бұрын
Thanks guys exactly what I was looking for
@andyhodchild82 жыл бұрын
I thought the advantage of a type B was that it didn't need to trip with 6ma dc? I thought that the RDC-DD tripped at 6ma dc to protect a type A RCD from blinding? Are RDC-DD being fitted on lower cost chargers? Not installing, about to retire, just interested as have been doing PV. Also I came across two types of type b rccb's ev and si I guess something that will no doubt need checking.
@efixx2 жыл бұрын
If you install a type B RCD you don't need the 6mA RDC-DD, however if there's an old RCD upstream it could be affected by the DC, I guess that's why most manufacturers put the protection in the charge point. Interestingly a lot of charge point manufacturers seem to be removing the RCD protection from inside their chargers now.

Sounds like a load of hassle to me. I did the qualification, and used my own metrel easy test before i put the cover on. So to do the 6mA DC test i will have to spend another £1000+ on new equipment. It would be nice if you didn't have to set switch the cp knob back and forth between each test. Be nice if it was all done automatically!

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to test tethered chargers (i.e. the Type 2 cable permanently attached to the charger)?
@efixx3 ай бұрын
The tester plugs in to the end of the tethered lead.
@danielardelian23 ай бұрын
@@efixx Thank you for the quick reply. Have you actually tested this? I'm not arguing with you, but I know that standard Type 2 cables are designed such that they cannot be stringed together as "extension leads" (I tried and, as expected, it doesn't work). So if the Metrel plug works plugged into a cable (as an extension lead), then it's probably specially designed for this, which is good.
