This is one of the few youtube videos I have viewed where the person has a true and good understanding of both electrical theory and mechanical aspects of these pumps. You explained well. My only issue is recommending that people should try spinning the shaft to see if motor works as sometimes the windings can go hard down to earth and protective devices are just not there or do not operate. If this is the case and you don't test insulation resistance first, then trying to spin the shaft while energized may just be the last thing they ever do. Apart from that, I enjoyed the video and well done.

Your welcome. I don't think you need a start capacitor for a 3 phase induction motor. The 3 phases create a rotating magnetic field.
@tectalabyss
@tectalabyss 10 жыл бұрын
electronicsNmore You are correct. No run capacitor needed. Really the starter for the 3 phase motor is the most complicated Part, Though once one understand"s it, it's not that bad. Cap banks are used to keep the power factor down.It's a money saver for Big manufacturing plant's. I would like a 100 dollar bill for all the motors I wired over the years. : ) Thank you for the reply

Thanks for this video! Very informative and helpful. I am having an issue where the motor will start but then shuts off after about 30 seconds and hums. I have replaced the capacitor, terminal board and V switch and still same result. From watching the video, I am now wondering if the problem is a bad run winding or possibly the centrifugal switch? Any ideas or suggestions???

Thank you for taking the time to makes this video. Question: my Hayward .75hp pool pump starts & runs for about 10 seconds, then shuts off (does not trip the breaker). I changed the run capacitor, thinking it was the issue, but the problem persists. Since it does start, I must assume the start capacitor is good (maybe that's naive of me). The motor shaft spins freely. Any insight on what else I should examine?

Is there a pressure switch installed
@DontjeB
@DontjeB 5 ай бұрын
@@electronicsNmore I do not believe so. The motor is a Century .75hp, part number 7-196335-24. Similar in design, but not an exact replica, to the motor you used in this video. It's about 8 years old, and has had lots of runtime. It might just be tired. I don't mind buying a new motor, but I like to troubleshoot and try to find the root source of issues like this.

Great video, nice and detailed!! I have a question. My pool pump (1.5hp with only a start capacitor, just like the one in this vid) recently started turning off for a few seconds then on again for a few seconds. It will continue to alternate between off and on every 10-30 seconds until I shut it off. I replaced the capacitor because it was the easiest thing to do first, but it didn't fix it. What are the 2 or 3 most likely things that could be wrong in your opinion? Thanks!
@electronicsNmore

Sounds like a faulty motor overload protector, or a faulty winding in the motor.

Awesome channel. I have a spare 1.5hp 115/230v AC single speed pool pump and will use it for a future water project experiment running 24/7. Problem: it uses too much power for what I need (wastes electricity) and too fast (3500rpms). Is there a something I can add to the motor/circuit to make it draw less current (amps)?

Thanks for a GREAT video, question: IF the THERMAL OVERLOAD SWITCH you identify at 5:00m GOES BAD, will that cause the breaker to trip that feeds the power to the pump? I'm troubleshooting my shallow well above ground Goulds 115/230v irrigation pump (set & used at 115v). I replaced the capacitor already & triple checked timer, breaker & voltage (all is FINE). Or does this situation sound like we have a burned out start winding? NOTE: the motor shaft spins very nicely, no hang up at all. THANK YOU SIR!!!
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 8 жыл бұрын
+C-Jones Lawn & Tree Hi there. The thermal switch will never cause the circuit breaker to trip. If you have full voltage at the motor terminals, then only a faulty capacitor or shorted winding would trip the circuit breaker. You can remove the start capacitor from the motor, tape off the terminals out of the way from moving parts, then power up the motor and CAREFULLY give the shaft a quick spin to see it the motor runs. If it does, then the start wining is shorted out,. You should have discovered that doing the resistance test on the start winding. Thanks. Be sure to rate thumbs up and share.

You need to refer to the wiring diagram on your motor. You can take resistance measurements between all the wires to get an idea which lead to the run winding, and which lead to the start winding. Thanks for watching!

I don't know much about shallow well pumps but I have changed a couple pressure switches(30/50) on my old 1.5hp Gould's J10 until I decided to finally get a new one. I snapped a pic of pressure switch terminals and wiring since both pumps are practically the same. . . recently I noticed whenever pump cuts in it clicks a few times before running. Twice the pump stopped running(not breaker trip) but after I flip breaker to off then on again pump runs again. I notice my kitchen light slightly flicker whenever new pump cuts in. My old pump never said this. New Gould's J10+ has 120/240v switch, old Gould's J10 was 240v on 2 pole switch. I set new pump to 240v as well. I don't know what's going on?

But you didn't test the red start wire to the other pole ( blue and white)? In this sears motor I have the reading you are getting with the black and yellow and red is in mega ohms. The white and blue and red I get the reading you are getting with your wires here. I want to hook up to 120V. Do I hook up the black wire to the purple? and supply power to white and yellow with the red to the capacitor and white as common? I basically also like to ask what is the reading between all wires for 120/240 V motor coil set up? Thank you very much.

I have almost the exact motor your referencing in this video, my question is, I plan on using this pump(motor is attached) as a turbine to generate electricity in a micro-hydro electric configuration. I am curious if I turn on the water flow and bring the motor up to speed, will it be generating electricity or would I need to field flash the coil to start the process...? I know with a PMA you wouldn't require the field flash, and if i'm understanding it correctly a three phase motor could be phase shifted with capacitors to negate the need for field flashing the motor, but with a single phase motor like the one in this vid do you think it would be required...?

Refer to my microwave oven parts testing video in my video list. When you place the probes of the DMM (using a 1K ohm range or higher)on the terminals of a DISCHARGED capacitor, the resistance should start out lower, then climb very high.

If the motor is running, can you use the start winding as a generator? I think it should. No idea if it can be useful.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 10 жыл бұрын
This motor was used in an induction generator that I made years ago. I ended up switching to my inverter generator which is in my video list. When I made the induction generator, I used BOTH windings for power. The main winding supplied most of the power to a 120V receptacle(60V per leg since there was no center tap on the winding), and the start winding supplied around 350W or slightly higher power output at a voltage which was a little higher than the main winding. Once the motor is operating at full speed, you should be able to take power off of the start winding(red and black wires).
