Another thing I hope will be helpful to people, if there needle valve has been leaking check your oil and make sure gasoline hasn't been passing your pistant rings into the case from overflowing the carburetor bowl.

What damage does this do if it does get into your oil? I think this has happened to my son's 2003 Honda Recon ES 250. I changed his oil but didn't know if I need change it a few times. As if I was flushing it out like a radiator or something. Single mom limited mechanic skills 🤟🙄

This is exactly what i’m guessing happened to me. Gas is LEAKING from my crank case and it’s mixed with the oil, obv.

@@shontelcostner6942 If you have already changed the oil, it should be fine. Keep an eye on your oil level and if is suddenly more full than it was before, the fuel is leaking in again. It is a good practice to turn your fuel petcock valve to the off position when not in use and that will prevent the fuel from leaking in.

I had this very same problem with the seat leaking in my 110cc motorcycle. 2 mechanics couldnt find the problem, a third one in the dealership finally found the problem but if I hadn't changed the needle valve first they would've just changed it and let the seat alone to keep leaking. This was really helpful video - I was always wondering how to pull the needle seats from the body, when they are stuck. An easy way to test needle and seat leaks is to blow into the fuel line on the carb. It doesn't require much pressure since fuel is simply delivered via gravity. Using compressed air though of about 2psi into the fuel line is handy when searching for gasket leaks around the carb, boot and reed cage. My o-ring was bad also. The brass seat has a diameter of 7.5mm so I bought a 1/4" inside diameter o-ring. That's a hair smaller than 7.5mm which is necessary to give it a snug fit. The o-ring wall thickness is 1/16" and after it was installed it fit with the right amount of snugness to stop the leaking.

Excellent! Love the diagnostic testing vs replacing parts and hoping for the best. Can I buy replacement Viton tips for the float needle instead of buying the whole needle assembly? Seems a waist to buy the assembly when only the rubber tip needs replacing. Would love to see a video rebuilding/testing a Bing 54 carburetor.

I’m surprised that the other guy could have missed this, but on the other hand I have had them intermittently fail in the past where they have seemed ok when tested then randomly started passing and then stopped again seemingly at their own leisure. Most carb issues that have developed over time from dirt (blocked jets etc) cause lean running, unless someone has already been there and tried to adjust it out already. A bad needle valve would be the first thing I checked in this situation of rich running issues. When I strip carbs I always suggest to the customer that new needle valves be fitted anyway. Usually if one is passing badly, the overflow will leak anyway, but sometimes if it’s only slightly passing, I find that the bike will run fine under load when it needs the fuel, then start to run rich/misfire once stopped at traffic lights etc. Loving the thumb nail by the way, a true sign of a fellow struggler. I’ve only just found these videos and it seems your testing methods I’ve seen so far, are much like mine.

I brought my 1980 dodge b300 360 to a mechanic a few months ago to get a pressure and leak down test and right after I started to have a hanging high idle couldn’t find the problem myself so I left it parked for a couple of months. I just started it today and fuel started coming out of my carburetor. Not sure what is going on because the vehicle was completely fine until I brought it to a mechanic. Not sure what they did to cause a vacuum leak or anything else to the carburetor. What are your thoughts on this. Could the float leaking be the result of a hanging high idle.

Just put all new parts in my dirt bike carburetor(gaskets,float valve,jets,float valve seat and Oring)and it is still pouring fuel out of the overflow hose. Do i need to bend the float tang down towards the bowl/ground or up towards the slide to get the fuel to shut off

So when you have a mechanical fuel pump and the bowls are full and the float forces the needle to block off the port, where does the fuel coming from the pump go, it just keeps being pumped against the needle? The pressure doesnt keep increasing as the pump keeps forcing the fluid against needle?

Never thought about compressing air through to test if it is air tight or not...usually, I plug the carb back in, crank it to let the fuel flow into it, then take it out again to see the fuel quantity inside the tank, then repeat the process as needed until you get it right..this is such a relief alternative..hahahaha (y)

Great info. I have a vintage dirtbike that keeps dumping fuel even after re adjusting the floats. It's running way too rich. I think the Needle and seat is clapped out and time for a new one.

i got the same problem with my carburator where i need to always shut my fuel cock when its on standby just to prevent my fuel from draining. tried it cleaning it so many times and made couple of tuneup but not seems to fix the problem. fuel always draining and fuel enrich mixture. does all the carb has that o-ring? cause I've never check mine.

Nice video and I appreciate the information! I have not did this test but I definitely will. I have a question that maybe you can answer. I'm working on a Bayou 250. It's running rich at mid to high rpm. Why would someone of drilled the seat bottom /reverse side of where needle rests? I had cleaned carb with spray cleaner and compressed air with no luck. I finally took everything off carb....that's when I noticed someone has either drilled the hole or made a small, rough "countersink" on the back/bottom side of the seat. I am about positive that's why I can't get the engine to run correctly. I actually just ordered a new needle & seat but any input will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's a pity there isn't more bike mechanics like you . I repair a lot of bikes for people (usually free of charge) in my spare time . I get a lot of repairs that should have been done correctly the first time from a local bike repair shop . I tell them to keep away from these people but they don't have anywhere else to go. It's funny because even after I rectify faults that the bike shop didn't, they will still go back to them ? Maybe they will be loyal to me if I charge top dollar and do a shoddy job? The outside of these carbs should have been spotless. Poor workmanship !
