During your CDL pre-trip inspection, the governor must be tested. Watch the video to learn how!
On an air brake equipped vehicle, the compressor pumps air the entire time the motor is running. The governor controls the compressor. The governor puts the compressor into the load (cut-in) and unload (cut-out) phase. It’s like a thermostat on a furnace. When the temperature in the house reaches a minimum, the thermostat turns the furnace on; and when the temperature in the house reaches a maximum, the thermostat turns the furnace off. Like the thermostat that controls the furnace within a temperature range, the governor controls the compressor within a pressure range - often between 100 (670kPa) and 135psi (930kPa). When the pressure reaches a minimum, the governor directs the air from the compressor into the system (load phase); when the system reaches a maximum air pressure, the governor directs the air pressure into the atmosphere (unload phase). The governor is nothing more than an on/off switch that works within a range.

I do pm’s on trash trucks and my question is when I do my cut in cut out test, I’ll pump the brakes but it builds at any pressure until the air dryer purges, i may be doing them wrong but every time I do it it seems like it will build pressure wether it’s 5 pounds or 60 pounds from the cutout pressure

I drive Pierce Velocity for my work. We have department SOP based on NFPA 1911 and OR CDL Manual for testing cut in and cut out pressures. They all state that after determining cut in pressure, switch to high idle and observe cut out pressure. Why high idle?

Have got Mitsubishi Fuso 6D16 engine semi truck,The problem it’s not pissing air out from air dyer once reaches close to 9PSI the safety valve opens on the air tanks and they is no air pissing out,it build air normal to 9PSI within 5mins at rest but once you put in motion immediately drops to 6PSI & air low warning keeping alarming and doesn’t build air while in motion unless you step on the gas…

Have the governor cut in at 119 psi and out at 120. Constantly cycling. Have replaced governor and air dryer. Still same. Have fixed every leak can find. Need help

Mind does sound like a machine gun. I replaced the dryer cartilage and the purge valve, also made sure both unloader valves are good. It purges for about 1m 47sec. Then builds up and releases every 30 seconds. Update I also replaced the governor and it still sounds like a machine gun. So what is the issue?? Please help

You cannot adjust only the cut in point. You can only adjust the 20-25 psi cut in/cut out range. If you think of it as a 12 inch ruler, you can place a 1 inch range anywhere on the ruler. The values will change but the range remains the same. Hope that helps.

Hi Anastacio Santiago - There could be any number of problems with the system my friend. The sensor in the air tanks telling the system that it's full could be faulty. Some times a bit of dirt gets caught in the purge valve inside the air dryer and causes that problem, but because you replaced it, that's unlikely. At this juncture, I would counsel you to take it to an automotive technician. They have the tools to diagnose and tell what's working and what's not. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Joseph Fields - Thank you for your comment and query. If you're system isn't building pressure, it's most likely the governor. There's probably a way to bypass the governor and keep it pumping into the system. If the system reaches enough pressure to blow off the safety valve then you know it's not the compressor, but rather the governor. Stop back and let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick

I cleaned the entire dryer assembly and replaced the filter, purge valve, and air governor. Now the system builds to much air and cuts out around 140psi fallowed by the machine gun sound coming from the purge valve. Any ideas on what I can do?

Think of it like a thermostat on a furnace that turns the furnace on and off within a range. Except the governor diverts where the air goes. I've got a KW T 800 not building air at idle. This morning after running 10 minutes I had 0 PSI in both tanks. I wonder if its dumping air to atmosphere and not entering load phase. Or maybe I have a bad compressor? I don't have any bad leaks with the supply valve opened or closed nor with the brake applied but the truck will leak down over night.

Hi Blade - Thank you for your comment and query. Pull off the main discharge line and see if there is compressed air coming from the compressor. Also, check the discharge valve on the air dryer - that may be stuck open and dropping the air from the system. I'm not sure if you can bypass the governor, but if you can, that will tell you if it's the governor. I know there's a set screw on the governor, and you could try adjusting that and see if you get any response. There's a safety valve on the system, so don't be afraid of over-pressurization. I was loading asphalt yesterday holding the brake under the shoot and my secondary air red lighted on me and the alarm came on. So I'm thinking with no major leaks that I have some sort of weak delivery problem.

Is the cut in pressure adjustable? I know you can adjust the cut out pressure. I have a bus that continuously cycles. About 5 seconds after it spits it starts building pressure again, then spits. Any Ideas? Thanks!!

Hi Chris Berry - Thank you for your comment. You can adjust the pressures via the governor, although I usually leave that up to a mechanic. I have heard of there being a bit of dirt inside the purge valve in the air dryer which causes it to discharge and spit on a constant basis. Try blowing a bit of compressed air up into the air dryer purge valve and see if that works. If not, it may have something to do with the air dryer. Just wanted to leave an update, I pulled the air dryer apart and found that the check valve on the supply to the tank had come apart. Replaced the check valve and fixed the cycling problem!! Thanks for your input!!

Hi er Agesson - thank you for your comment. The technical specifications of how the air governor works is somewhat beyond the scope of this channel. For the purposes of getting an air brake ticket, drivers have to know what a governor does, and know how to check that it in fact works. It's like driving a car, a driver doesn't have to know how it works to drive the car. Saying that however, the air governor is a valve which consists of pistons, ports (gates) and springs. The air pressure from the air tanks works against a piston and spring, and when the air pressure is sufficient it moves the piston and closes off or opens the ports, which are essentially gateways. These gates direct the air pressure to different locations. When the air pressure from the air tanks reaches maximum (usually 125psi), it pushes the piston and spring and redirects the air to the unloader valve in the compressor and the purge valve in the air dryer. I understand Rick, that the drivers do not need to know all details about the design. I have worked with fluid power education since 1975 to 2000. I also have been pro truck driver here in the US for 13 years. And I must say that that knowledge about this is generally enough good to know how to replace a governor, but when it comes to explaining how the system works in detail, the general knowledge and UNDERSTANDING is poor, even among shop personnel. I recently got a question from a professional driver if it was possible to "widen" the pressure range on the governor so the compressor didn't need to kick in and recharge the system every "30 seconds". Obviously, the driver didn't have full UNDERSTANDING of his brake system. When I tried to explain and proof this "diameter difference" he asked for images that show this, and there are no such images that really point this out. Only the text in the Bendix-pdf briefly mentions it. I know from my 25-year career in fluid power education (in Sweden) that analogies like you are using only works as a help to understand the "true story" ie real technical education...

If the governor is kicking the compressor in and out every 30 seconds, my first guess is that the governor's spring that controls the main piston has weakened. These springs do that over time and the governor simply needs to be replaced. If it's not that than it might be the unloader valve in the compressor, but I suspect it's the piston in the governor. I'm confused on the Ohio cdl manual it doesn't say anything about a static air test of governor air test only Apply pressure test then low warning test follow by emergency test. Are the governor test mandatory in every state or just different states

If you can get a compressor hose in there to blow out the purge valve. You need to test and diagnose the air compressor itself. Most times the "unloader" in the compressor head is stuck...because it is wore out. But, the piston rings and bore could be wore beyound speck...if this is the case, the unloader will not signal correctly.

Hi Ellis Girrard - thanks for your comment and query. The first thing I would determine is if the air compressor is pumping air. Remove the main discharge line an see if there is air coming from the compressor. If the vehicle is that old - is the compressor belt driven; if so, is the belt slipping? If the compressor is pumping air, than I would look for a leak somewhere in the system - do a leak test to see if there is a one - you might be able to pump the system by hooking the main discharge line to a garage compressor. If either of those two things aren't your problem, than I would move to the governor. All the best, Cheers Rick

Thanks for the quick reply Rick!...I'm in Australia..so you saying 'cheers' was quite funny...lol Anyway, the compressor looks to be either gear or chain driven...and quite tell as its covered up by a housing. I've had this in three times for annual inspections (law in Au.) and they haven't found any air leaks in the system..and you can't hear any. I will certainly disconnect the main compressor air tube coming out and see how much air its putting out....I'm also thinking maybe the air dryer might not be letting air threw or maybe its partially blocked. this has been a slowly developing problem, I've had the unit about 4 years now..its been converted to a motorhome, when I got it...air would go up to 110 quite easily, I've only put on about 4000 ks, and now as I said...just won't charge up...thanks for you help, you have a great site!

Hi Ellis - thank you for your compliment. Yes, I lived in Melbourne for 5 years, and that's where I picked up the "Cheers" from. Now that you mention the air dryer, I suspect--as you do--that that's your problem. It's easy to to get the main discharge line off the compressor, and once you know that it's pumping air, then I would simply replace the filter on the air dryer. Hi Rick...sorry for the late reply. I am still working to try and find my problem..and now that you agree the air dryer might be a problem, I'll try and run down a replacement for it. Also checking to see if any oil has traveled threw the system as that might be an indicator of worn rings in the compressor..so far, dont really see anything unusual. Also, going to hook up a guage to the compressor to see just how much it is putting out...again, thanks for your help..will get back to you as we discover things, always good to let others know what we might find...cheers

When pressure reaches max(135ish). and I'm in idle or easy on the gas it seems to keep the compressor in "unload" but if I lay on the gas I start hearing my purge valve engage... Is it normal for the compressor to push while I'm accelerating if it's already at max. psi.?...

Riff Raff - thanks for your query. No, that’s not normal. The compressor should stay in the unload phase until system pressure drops approximately 20 psi below maximum operating pressure. Smart Drive Test it's coming from the expello auto air drier valve thing on the air tank itself... The air pressure gauge on my dash stays at the proper maximum but that expello starts spitting when I accelerate up a grade or lay on the gas to pick up speed... I'm pretty sure the governor is doing its job right. It's probably something with that expello valve.

pressure in front gauge goes down to alarm point then returns to normal. rear gauge stays at normal pressure. need answer please

Hi Doug - my first attempt would be to check the governor. The governor controls the two sub-systems; therefore, my first guess would be there is something wrong with the spring. Is it a newer truck with an Air Dryer Integrated System? Cheers Rick

I dont have air brakes but i do have on board air....My problem is its building wayyyy to much pressure..Its getting up to 160psi and i know thats not good....It does not purge or let any air out... is this a govenor problem or air dryer/purge problem??? please help

Hi Rick Marlow - Thank you for your comment. If it's your air brake board and you're using a standard garage compressor, than I would suggest it's the regulator on the compressor. You're not going to use an airbrake governor, but rather the regulator on the compressor. As well, if you're at 150psi, the safety valve either isn't there or it isn't working. Hi Ricky - if it's building to 160psi, then it's a problem with both your safety valve, and your governor I suspect. Can you swap out the governor and see if that works? All the best, Cheers Rick

Well that was confusing. First he said when a governor fails you hear a sound like a machine gun. Later he said if you hear a machine gun sound it is because it is due to a bad safety valve. What causes a machine gun sound. A bad governor or a bad safety valve.

if you don't hear cut out, but air gauges stop building, what would cause that governor did have audible cut out? failed governor???

I have 2005 peterbilt 379, cat15 engine My truck sounds like a machine gun when it gets to 120psi. It slowly drops it to 90 with this horrible sound. Then quickly builds the pressure back 120 and machine gun sound is back. Replaced air dryer with all the components twice (including governor). Purchased at fleet pride. Replaced main air hose(compressor to dyer ) 3 times. It heats up and burns thru every time. Replaced both valves on top of the compressor...SOS.. Bad compressor? Or bad dryer?

Is the air getting past the air dryer into the air tanks? It's unlikely, but there's a possibility that the one-way check valves at the entrance to the air tanks could be causing a blockage.
