Hi Graham, people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Thank you for caring and sharing. You have have dispensed beyond knowledge, know-how, and tips in recording. Hard work and the denial of entitlement (even if some might demand it) leads indeed to persistence and contentment which in turn determines happiness and success. I'm an educator by training and an accidental subscriber (and a novice recording enthusiast) to learn how to do professional work at home. I want you to know that you are a great inspiration to me for demonstrating doing what is right. It has blessed me tremendously. Continue to thrive!

This message holds up, even years later. No plugins ever made will just make you "good." Pirated plugins have never even been a thought to me. I would rather put more effort into learning how to use plugins rather than how to steal them.

Kudos to you, Graham, for taking a stand. I have to admit that I have gotten cracked stuff. But as I want to move to a legit sound engineer, I am shunning away from cracked stuff. The turning point for me was when my wife bought me an iPad & I was able to go legit starting w/ the iPad DAWs. Then my wife purchased for me a MacBook Pro, I went straight legit. I worked hard to get audio gear. I realize that I should have the same attitude for the software as I have w/ the hardware. Kudos again!

I think that the piracy and corporate problems are way more complex, but you hit the nail here in the main issue and reminded me the lesson that has set me free as solo producer-musician for a couple of years now: It's not about the gear, it's about talent, creativity, work and balls. Cheers, dude!

I started listening to this every other day, and it has been THE single most important video in terms of my musical success. My "recording and mixing" Timeblock used to consist of geeking out over gear and downloading as many plugins as possible until I ran out of memory on my MacBook and external hard drive. (Literally a terabyte guys) I wiped them all and I'm using stock plugins. Now my recording time consists of *shocker, omg wait for it* actually recording and mixing. Thank you man. I can't wait to share what I've been working on when it's done :)

You have opened up my eyes and saved me from spending unnecesary money, It's so easy to get caught up in the supposed wonders of new and more expensive gear and ignore the fact that people fourty or fifty years ago wouldnt even dream to have this much music making resources at their disposal... yet they made music that's gonna last for a longer while than our own lives... ¡Muchas gracias from México!

I think that your comments are absolutely accurate, Graham. Well said. I really think that the 'entitlement' issue is much larger than just an attitude problem. It is a problem that involves justifying our wrong actions so that we can do what makes us happy, no matter how it hurts. I hope that we can all agree that wrong is wrong, unconditionally. Just like it is wrong to steal a microphone, a computer or an audio interface, it is wrong to steal software.

I really like your approach, I'm just recently starting to subscribe to your channel, great I found about it (been recording/producing for years though). One thing I don't like with buying plugins is the feeling that they just loose in value over time, some plugins I've bought can't even be used any longer because they where designed using obsolete developing tools when they made them. Lots of hardware gear will hold up it's value over time, but no one wants version 1 of a Waves EQ. But I hear what you are saying. Another _huge_ problem with downloading plugins is that you end up having all the greatest plugins in the world, without actually deeply knowing how to use a subset of those. You loose focus, and buying a plugin will definitely make you eager to utilize and tweak everything about that plugin. "Grow up" is actually quite good advice!

Hey Graham, i totally agree with you. I'm self employed as an audio engineer and producer for almost a year now. And i started, with nothing. I had no Money, i had my Computer with my DAW, two Monitors which has cost me 200 bucks, and an audiointerface. There is great stuff out there, plug ins or analog equipment, but it doesn't matter if you don't know how to use it. At my University we had a Studio in the Basement, with tons of stuff, a Neve console, cool outboard and a lot of Plug ins. And i hated it. Because if you have so much possibilities you don't know what to do. It takes time to get involved with all that stuff. And even as I knew how to use it, i was not able to work like i'm working now. Because it's all about experience. From my first jobs i bought me some Plug ins from Waves, and because i had not so much money, i choosed carefully. And you can download a demo from any Plug in and just try it. The people who create this Plug ins deserve to be paid just as i want to be paid for recording, or mixing bands. And let's be honest, plug ins are not as expensive as everyone say. In relation to analog equipment, plug ins are really cheap. And what does that do for me to have a huge libary and no idea of how my music should sound like. It's better to have less equipment and use it right. I buy equipment one after another, and i think about what do i need to get the sound that i want. I'm not a Pro in Audio recording or mixing, but i try to be better than the last project i worked on. By the way, i'm a fan of analog equipment and a few weeks ago i bought a SPL Goldmike MKII and i'm so happy, it's sounds amazing. Thank's for your Videos they helped me a lot. And sorry for my english, it's not the best. greetz from Germany

"This is what I have, and I'll make the best of it." This is a great attitude to have, especially if you don't have a lot to work with. Just to remind those who're starting out, I've heard from my seniors that you should be able to produce a great sounding track with just the basic building blocks of Cubase 5. Dyamics, HALionOne and Groove Agent One. That's it. Producers are essentially craftsmen. Sure, great tools can yield great products but it's about how you utilize what you have and finding a way to get around it.

totally agree. I made this switch in thinking a few years ago and my whole life has improved greatlly as a result. I went through a phase of using lots of 'trial' versions and wondered why my music seemed to get worse. when I stripped back, embraced limitations and put the work into learning to use what i had properly, my music skills improved rapidly, i enjoyed the creative process more and the end results where much better. :)

I completely agree. One point that you didn't mention is, when you purchase plugins, you tend to research and learn about what the plugin's are actually doing. When I buy a plugin I know why I'm buying it. If you download cracked VST's then yeah.... you have may 30 Eq's that the pros use but do you really know why, when and where to use them?

The instant gratification mentality has lead to the notion of entitlement. Not many are willing to delay gratification and grind it out with what tools they have. Necessity is the mother of invention. Get creative and do the work. Your comments apply to all things in life. Great piece.

it's ironic; when i was "struggling" with gear (so i thought - not that i am nearly satisfied now - and know there will always be something else out there) i seemed to be much more creative. in 2011 into 2012 i had a $200 interface and the floodgates kind of just poured open. since then, the more things i obtained i kept looking to the next thing... and the last 6-8 months has been a wash creatively; yet i keep looking up different pieces of gear and find myself watching heaps of videos on them. there's that saying that the more things you have the more those things have/own you...
@ElBlancoPapi
@ElBlancoPapi 7 жыл бұрын
Yep..... Restrictions actually promote Creativity, rather than restrict it. Actually, too many options is a barrier to Creativity. There's a reason why that saying goes "necessity is the mother of invention." When we are restricted, we really have to think hard and come uo with creative solutions.... if we have everything we need at our fingertips, why would we ever be forced to think or get creative? We wouldn't. That whole entitlement mindset carries over into Every facet of life and will cost those people dearly in the long run

My gosh... This is soo true... I have been called "amateur" for using FL as my DAW of choice OR "uncreative" because I experiment with a lot of vintage vinyl samples.. And after a while of hearing all that silly talk, the idea starts to sink in that maybe I need jump on Protools or Cubase.. Which I have tried but FL to me will always be easiest thing work with.. Jumping from one DAW to another means first stealing a copy then checking if I can adapt.. Then stealing plugins, then stealing the next thing... And through out the whole entire process, I am not progressing or putting out any real new music - all I am doing is trying to adapt! The day I learned to: (1) be content with my gear, skill set and what sound I d live to put out. And (2) Have as much fun as possible making new music.. That's the day everything else stopped bothering me. I am no longer in a rush to get the latest plugins... I am more into hardware.. I m now comfortable being patient and saving up for the gear that need... Even if it takes six months.. I don't care.. I have soo much fun doing what I enjoy doing. It's not a race!!

Hey Graham. Totally agree! Everything we have (software, hardware, gifts, talents, abilities, etc) is not a right or entitlement. It is a privilege, blessing & opportunity we receive. The biggest battle, bottle-neck and enemy we have sometimes is ourselves, and what we believe. Consumerism has taken the life out of soo many things...

Thanks for having the balls to say these things, Graham. Early on I'm my recording and mixing, I used some cracked plugs and even a cracked DAW. With time and maturity I saw that 1: there's no magic plugin &2: it was shameful to steal something that someone else had worked so hard to create. If you want people to pay you for your work, don't be stealing other people's work. Thanks again, Graham. Rock on man.

This is "My View". Gear is Gear and most DAW and even standalone system have enough plugins to make great music, but skill is what counts. I took a Korg 3200 and produced a five song project for my father in-law before he passed away that still gets amazing comments on and it was all done with only two mics and B1 and a sure bata 58 on a korg 3200 with NO outside gear or plugins in my den and my father in-laws living room. I made the switch to a DAW and have been learning the whole process from Graham and some others. the thing I like most about graham is the way he teaches because he tells us yes there is gear that he likes to use that didn't come with the DAW; BUT YOU CAN MAKE GREAT MUSIC WITH WHAT YOU HAVE! Graham teaches you how to use the minimum for maximum return. To quote he "it's not about the gear it's about you"..... I started looking at things in a different light when I started learning from Graham. Thanks Graham for all you do for us.

Well said Graham. Thanks for going above and beyond. I know that a lot of people feel that plug-ins are over priced but that is largely due to the theft of plug-ins. There are so many amazing free plugins, there's really no excuse for pirating. My first ambient pieces where made on freeware alone, I've had people ask me what kind of gear I have to get that sound, same people that didn't believe me when I told them it was all freeware. Simply because their focus was on geting the "best" plugins, while my focus was on the actual music. Graham is 100 % right. What bands paid thousand of dollars to access before, people now can have for free on their laptops.

It is mind blowing that people who believe that just because they were conceived on the same planet, they deserve everything that is of this earth. There, also are people who work for profit; to provide us with the things that give us enjoyment and the tools to chase our dreams. more to come ...

You are the MAN Graham! I just wana thank you for all the awesome free tips and advice you've given me, it's worth insurmountably more than any plug-in could ever be. I was flabbergasted by the response to your article the other day, especially how some people didn't seem to care how it impacted the small businesses (ie: people's JOBS) who make these products. Some people just want to justify it to themselves in any way that they can and not admit that it is theft of a product and IP. :(

Agree 100 percent. I have never had cracked plug ins, I find demos or free vsts for when i do not have money to buy something. Funnily enough i mix better from watching your videos than i do from searching for that new plug in that will make my mixes sound great.

Your right about the Plugins.There are a lot of ridiculously priced programs out there and Im not buying or stealing any of em.I take my money and support the affordable companies.

Graham I enjoy your thought process on not the tech of audio, but the life application of audio. I believe it is a generational issue mostly. The microwave thought process of todays time has the audio generation of today in this entitlement vortex. I must be on top right now!!! Your first tip of work hard is mud today. How do we change it. Just like you have talking about it and giving your testimony. Keep it up man people do hear and respect you.

I have basic DAW plugin effects and it's amazing how much I'm learning just by using those in conjunction with your videos. Like you say Graham, if you can't mix with the basic plugins you won't sound any better with the expensive ones.

My first song recording was, played live on a keyboard with a $20 Radio shack mic connected to a 4 mono channel mixer into my Windows 3.11 PC line-in socket, recorded using "Recorder" software included. My song was played on community radio for quite some time... No DAW, no plug-in no fx. Now I own Presonus Studio One and few other hardware to record my, as well as friends, again using just the standard plug-ins that come with my DAW.

I started watching your videos and blog 2 months ago and I wanna thank you, your tips have helped so much, your less-is-more approach to mixing and plugins its been really eye-opening. I'm an amateur songwriter/beat-maker and I used to used too many plugins in my projects, and the worst part they were all cracked plugins. I'm not proud to say it, I've realized I don't need that many plugins, I just need to know how to properly program them ( they're soft synths)

I know exactly what you are saying. My wife and I have built our shop over 18 years and we bought everything as we went along. We appreciate all we have to work with and thank God for blessing us with the skills to do our jobs. Like you said the whole place could burn to the ground and we could start over or take it as a signal to move on to something new. Being a common thief will hinder you and it will be reflected in your work. You know it's wrong so why do it?

I just ran across Graham in some Pro Tools tips video, and I think it's really WEIRD that this guy is not more famous, known, celebrated. He has some great music and is really talented, but hardly has any views on KZbin, and no real marketing as a musician. WTF? It's almost criminal.

Great video Graham.I've been content with Reason for years. Made a lot of great jingles (for tv) with it, helped design sounds for lots of high end plugins with it as well. Gotta learn what you have to the fullest

the post about cracked plugins made me realize I was having this problem, I felt entitled to have those plugins and I was using them on my projects without thinking, but it resonated with me so much, and now I've decided to ditch them and buy all of my plugins legally and on top of that I'll be narrowing down my tools to only the plugins I really know how to tweak and the ones I can afford, It'll be better for me as a musician and I won't be having the legal/ethical nightmare I had before.

Oh god. Everything you say rings absolutely true. Even though I started a bit like you. I started recording about 6 or 7 years ago with a shitty web microphone onto a demo version of Adobe Audition, without any plugins! It sounded awful and and I still suck at recording! At the end of the day its not the plugin (which is just a set of instructions to make it easier), but the cumulative of all decisions you take during the entire process which makes or breaks the record.

I pay for my software and plugins now, but I admit I have downloaded plugins in the past but what I noticed was that when you purchase software or a plug in you will want to learn the ins and outs of that software a hell of a lot more than if you got it for free. I believe that buying plug ins make you appreciate them better and use them better because not doing so would be a waste of money. Sorry if I dont make sense, bit high

What you say in this vid sounds so much better than the article. I guess the feedback was useful to rephrase what you meant to make it more worthwhile. Feeling entitled is indeed a poison, and I have to admit I also suffer from it sometimes, so your words are really inspiring. Still I firmly believe that it is much easier to advocate self-restraint when one does not know poverty and the severely limiting environment of a poorer country.
