Mike, being new to cornhole, I was surprised at how many of your tips I'd already just kind of realized and implemented on my own when standing at my boards throwing and just tweaking and refining things as I progress. I've watched this video 2 times through so far in an effort to get my bag flight a little flatter and more consistent. Your tip on curling your gripping fingers on the bag has helped me immensely. Thanks so much!!!

The key to a flat bag is in the fingers and palm. The palm determines the left to right tilt and the fingers influence the funny and back tilt. Part attention to how the bag is leaning and adjust from there.

Thanks for the detailed video. If love to see one on how to make different types of throws. Like cut shots that curl one way or the other. Mine always go right once they hit the board.
@MikesBags
@MikesBags Жыл бұрын
I have a video in the works about the shot types. Hope to have it up within a couple weeks. Will be covering cuts, rolls and flops. If your bag is going right, then that probably means that you bag has a slight tilt with the left side down. If the left side of the bag hits the board first, the bag will go right and vice versa. That's how cut shots work. My natural shot goes a little too the right. If I focus, I can flatten the bag out and get rid of that but I've also learned to play with it. It comes in handy sometimes when I'm trying to get around a bag.

@@MikesBags thanks! That's what I thought. I've tried throwing it so it angles to the right but having a hard time since I'm right handed. Looking forward to the next video
@MikesBags
@MikesBags Жыл бұрын
So the simple answer is your palm dictates the right/left tilt and your fingers dictate the front and back tilt. In order to get the right side down, you have to over rotate your palm. I think if it as pinky over thumb. At release, you want your pinky side of the hand to be higher than the thumb side. Sounds simple but it is hard to do. This is hard to explain and I will cover this more in the video but you can change your release to get a right to left bag. For some people this is natural to them. Instead of rotating the bag out of the hand with your fingers, let the back roll out of the hand through the gap between your thumb and pointer finger. When your arm is coming forward, your fingers are pointed at the board. You are not rotating your wrist. You are bringing the hand towards the board and at the release point, you bring your hand across the front of your body. This causes the bag to roll out on the thumb side of the hand and gives it a right downward tilt. I hope that makes sense. Again, hard to explain here but I hope it comes across better in the coming video.

@@MikesBags interesting. Agree to disagree. I have a handshake release and use butterfly grip and have a very flat bag. It’s interesting to see how different everyone throws to achieve flat bags. I would challenge you to record your throw and then watch it back frame by frame. If your bag is flat, you will see that palm is up at the moment of release. It's impossible to release the bag at an angle and have it flatten out unless there is wind involved. I wish I could I post pics here in the comments. I record my throws at 60 fps. When I play the videos back frame by frame, it is easy to see that my palm is up at release.

Throwing a flat bag is more than just the throwing. Everything contributes to the bag flight. If your stance is off or you grip isn't correct, you aren't going to get a flat bag. The fact that you are ignoring that is probably one of the reasons why you aren't getting a flat bag.

@MikesBags
@MikesBags 9 ай бұрын
I would never recommend that to someone. That would require learning how to throw two different ways. Sarah Cassidy does this but she is the only one that I have seen have success with this. For me, I want every throw to be the same, regardless of which side of the board I am on. To have success, you have to be able to repeat your throw thousands of times during a tournament. If you are changing your throw, every time you change sides, it would hard to get into a rhythm and stay consistent. It may work for some people but most players are going to benefit from throwing the same every time.

This is super helpful! Is it natural to get back aches and tired out at the end of the night? I'm wondering if my stance and form is off. I feel like I'm using too much energy throwing and getting the bag to the other side.
@MikesBags
@MikesBags Жыл бұрын
Back aches are not normal. I would agree that there is probably a stance or form issue. If you are tensing up when throwing, that can cause the fatigue and back aches. Make sure you are relaxed when you are throwing. It shouldn't take a lot of energy to throw the bag 27 feet. Sounds like you need to review your throw and tweak a few things. My advice is to record yourself throwing and then watch it. A lot of times, you'll see something in the video that you didn't realize you were doing.

I don't hold the bags in my hand because I want every throw to be as close to the same as possible. If you are holding bags then every throw there is a different amount of weight in the off hand. When I first started, my bag tilted to the left. It took some time to get it flat. I took the golf approach. In golf, to fix a slice, you have to learn to hit a hook before you try to hit it straight. So, I practiced throwing the bag titled the other direction. Once I was able to do that, it was easy to back off the hand rotation some and flatten the bag. There are elite players who don't throw a flat bag. So don't let that discourage you.

@@joshuamora5700I forgot to address the nose down bag. That typically happens when you throw up on the bag. When you throw, your arm should move towards the board and not upwards. If your arm is finishing higher than the release point of the bag, then the bag will have a nose down flight. That's because you are lifting up the back of the bag as you release. I hope that makes sense. It's hard to explain. I have plans to do another video on throwing a flat bag and correcting the nose down bag is part of that video.

If I don't stance this way no matter what I do to keep the bag away from my body, I end up hitting my leg enough to throw the bag off trajectory. Anyway to fix this? Is this a common issue with other throwers?

The follow through is something that I failed to mention in this video. To me, it's a result of everything before it. So if you are consistent with the rest of the throw, you'll be consistent with your follow through. If you are having trouble with the consistency of it, look at the rest of your throw. I highly recommend recording your throw. You'll see things in the video that you didn't realize you were doing. You may find a thing or two that you can tweak to improve your consistency.

@MikesBags
@MikesBags Жыл бұрын
I start with bag in front of me at chest height. My elbow is bent at about 90 degrees. Check out some of the bag review videos on my channel and you will see me throwing. It sounds like you are over rotating your wrist and forearm. One way to help with that is to make sure that your fingers are flat and pointed where you want to land the bag. It's harder to over rotate if your palm is face up and your fingers are perfectly flat. Sometimes it even helps to force yourself to go the other way. Next time you are out throwing, focus on pointing the fingers slightly down at release. This will cause the bag to fly nose down. Throw 3 or 4 rounds like that and then go back and try to throw a flat bag. Only focus on your hand position at the release point. Forget about the rest of the throw. It will take some time and practice to correct so don't get discouraged.

@MikesBags
@MikesBags Жыл бұрын
The bag tilt is tied to the fingers. If the bag is tilted nose down, then your fingers are probably pointed downward when you release the bag. Focus on flat fingers (parallel with the ground) at release. Maybe even exaggerate it and try to point the fingers up a little.

I noticed I hit my leg on my forward swing a lot and even change throw path to where my arm is going towards my right butt cheek to start. Any tips to fix this? Appreciate any help. Soo annoying and hard to fix!
@MikesBags
@MikesBags Жыл бұрын
I've been having a similar issue myself. What I have done is move my back leg behind my front leg. My feet are almost in a straight line now. The other fix is to put your throwing leg forward. That will usually help with clearing your body. Another option is to step. Typically when you step, your arm swings out a little more. Hope some of that helps. If you are still having problems, record yourself throwing and then go back and watch the video. You may notice something that you are doing that you did not realize you were doing.

@@MikesBags thanks for the reply. Really appreciate it. I currently throw w my throwing foot forward. I may have to really give the step method a try. Video is how I found out how bad it is. I bend my elbow a lot on the b-swing too, so that prob has something to do with it. I’ll give the step a longer try. Thanks!!!

Great content... is there a chance you can redo this video, Do it so that we can see your hands, get closer to the camera and do inside so we don't have all the wind noise.
@MikesBags

Unfortunately, I don't have access to an inside facility. That's why I had to record this outside. I'm assuming you want to see my hands because of the grip. I have been thinking about doing a video on different grips. Keep an eye out for that video. It may cover what you are looking for.

Where do u live that has these concrete cornhole boards
@MikesBags

I live just outside Indianapolis. This was park was built a couple years ago. All the new parks around here have these concrete boards. They aren't that bad to throw on but they do play quite a bit slower than traditional boards.

@Dale Horton I have used all of the variations in the video at some point but I have settled on the butterfly grip as my grip of choice. I feel that I have better control of the bag using this grip over some of the others.

@MikesBags

Actually, the speeds are close to normal wooden boards. The big issue is the edges are not very smooth. Bags hang on the hole a lot. The edges also snag the bags very easily.

Man I Needed this! I’ve been playing everyday for about a year and been through so many ups and downs of my throw and I’m in a pretty bad slump I’m trying to spin it with my wrist to much and it’s causing all kinds of problems. I don’t know why it’s so hard for me to throw consistent every time

Use your phone to record yourself throwing. You may be surprised with what you see. Sometimes we think we are throwing a certain way but when you see yourself on video, you see all the problems. Don't be afraid to change something or try something new.

I have yet to see a video on KZbin teaching people how to improve their accuracy. I can throw the flattest bag, but it’s so inconsistent accuracy wise.
