I've done a fair amount of martial arts in my time--primarily wing chun--but i've always been interested in learning pure boxing technique. I let myself get out of shape over the last few years, so I decided to start going to a local gym run by a former european champion. I love it so far, but wanted some more technique tips so I found some of your videos. They're great and I appreciate the time and thought you've put into each and every one of them. Thanks!

Excellent question. Don't try to straighten your elbow all the way through. It should feel more like a pop. Also, you have to shadowbox regularly and loosen up your elbow before you box. That will help prevent hyperextension.

Hi! Just wanted to say thank you for the video. Went to a boxing gym for the first time (had been doing kickboxing before) and the coach corrected me when I rotated on my jab (as it was taught to me before). His explanation why not to rotate was so ridiculous for someone who understands a bit of physics and body mechanics, that I don't want to repeat it here. So I was looking at different jab instructional videos to understand why it's wrong, as it gives my jab more distance (I'm not very tall) and energy. Your comment at the end of this video clears the confusion - I was doing a left cross instead of a jab and it would prevent me from doing nicer and more unpredictable combos! Thanks again.

This was answered in the video. :) The answer is NO, do not twist or raise the heel during the jab. It turns it into a left cross which is not what you want. Keep that left foot flat for regular jabs.

It could be because you're too tense in the recovery of the fist. Try releasing the arm out and let the snap of the punch carry the hand back to you. You have to relax in order for the fist to snap.
@expertboxing12 жыл бұрын
Some people when they straighten their elbow too much, it easily gets hyper-extending. A good idea would be to warm up your joints before you box. I will make a video on this later showing you how to properly warm-up the joints.
@expertboxing12 жыл бұрын
You can do that too. Relax the arm more and see if you can give a little flick to the wrist as if you're slightly backhanding your opponent with your knuckles at the very end of the jab. Don't stiffen the arm or try too hard to push. Visualize a cracking whip.
@expertboxing12 жыл бұрын
I'm only a boxer. I did some BJJ 10 years ago but that's it. If you want to throw a dipping jab, tilt your head off to the side while you step in and launch that body jab. It's going to the body, so you need less of a snap and more of a push to really get that shot to penetrate.

I try to stand with my weight 50/50. As for pushing off with the rear foot vs a small step. Those are 2 different moves and you're welcome to try both and use whichever one is needed. Pushing with the rear foot can be good for reaching with the step jab where as the small step is better for dropping a quick hard jab (also good for pushing an opponent back with your jab).

The best boxing channel. I tend to think that when I throw my jab, i should move the elbow up (fully extend the arm) before rotating the shoulder, because if the shoulder is rotated first, the elbow moves to the side, which is bad.

Exactly. But the key thing is to be relaxed. You are relaxed whether your hand is open or closed, don't forget that.

A tall guy if he so badly wants to have an even longer reach should use other methods like reaching with the head. Twisting the body will slow down his rapid jabs because he has to untwist with each one. Not only that but twisting with the jab can slow down your cross since you're previously twisting against it (making it take longer to unwind). This is why you'll see tall guys like Tommy Hearns/Paul Williams only flicking with a long-loose arm while yanking his head in and out of range.

If you know what to do, it can help. To me, it should be the standard jab because that extra rotation will slow down the speed of your right hand coming out. Adding power should not be the goal of your jab....that's a typical beginner mistake.

If you rotate your hips on the jab, it will become a left cross which is more power but less speed, less snap. A jab is a quick little sting, not a blast.
@expertboxing11 жыл бұрын
If you don't twist, it's a jab. If you twist, it's a left cross. And it depends on how you see the punch. Remember, the jab's main benefit is the sharpness and speed...not power! But yes...if you keep trying to add power (and moving your hips from its neutral position), then you will slow down your jab and slow down your ability to follow up with other punches and movements. Go watch videos of the pros and see for yourself.

The proper way is to know your true range because that's where you have the most power. It's better than standing too far and then having to off-balance yourself to get a connect. Sure you'll connect but it won't mean anything.

Too bad many MMA guys don't even use the jab. They chase and head hunt with their right hand. Jabs are great for touch and measure so you're power punches aren't wasted swinging at air. The old heavy weight Seldon had a fast powerful jab.
@expertboxing11 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it's because the jab is typically the longest weapon for a boxer but for MMA, it's probably the legs that are better rangefinders. So I figure maybe once they're in that close, they rather trade heavier punches first. I don't really know, though.
@ZENIGMATV11 жыл бұрын
expertboxing I think most guys fall in love with their right hands and are looking for that home run KO. Most MMA guys use primarily round kicks which I wouldn't use as a range finder.I use the teep and side kicks and save round kicks for when I know I'm in range. Jabs in general are so important especially against bigger guys that get aggressive.
@EDOGZ81811 жыл бұрын
expertboxing In MMA, chokes negate some of the punching. MMA'ers engage in boxing because they either "want to", or don't want to get taken down. ( Fedor Emilianiko vs Andre Arlowski & Tim Silvia ) Jabs are usually thrown backing away, on the defensive, and most MMA fighters rarely back away or go on the defensive *from punches. **IMHO It works on a catch 52. If it works too well or often, the fight goes to the ground. The point about the legs being longer probably plays more of a role though.
@ZENIGMATV11 жыл бұрын
The Jab is not just a defensive tool.Many fighters who do choose to stand and bang could benefit from a quick powerful jab. I use a jab alot but if it goes to the ground then yeah it's a different game.

Either way, it's not a good idea. Twisting the foot doesn't bring you closer unless you're twisting your body as well and/or putting more weight on your front foot which is not advised. If someone wants to reach so badly, I would tell them to do what some pros do which is tilt their head forward. Twisting the foot or body is not recommended for so many reasons.

@VinnieMack9 жыл бұрын
+Mondo Mondo well when your inside..like facen to face with your opp, its better to be flat footed. That way youll be In a stable position in a crucial spot. Now when you want to be on the ball of feet is basically WHEN YOU WANT TO STICK AND MOVE. Kinda like Manny. Being on toes does add leverge to punches tho:)
@mavericksilva62819 жыл бұрын
Your always suppose to be on the ball of your feet never flat footed it's a very bad habit, moving around the ring flatfooted is hard and slows you down your suppose to be on your toes about 90% of the time. When you do get in the ring nobody fights stationary, your suppose to move around the ring, not box stationary and also you should always be ready to stick and move that's the beauty of the sport. Hopefully this answers your question
@VinnieMack9 жыл бұрын

Is this a technical question or a tactical one? Technically, the jab is a straight punch thrown from the front hand. Tactically, you can throw this soft straight punch from either hand...somebody made up the term "right jab" for a lead right hand punch that isn't thrown with maximum power.

I twist the entire leg but not the knee itself individually. That would be painful and just plain wrong. The knee is a hinge joint and isn't built for that kind of movement.
