Hi Tony, I’m 42 and 13 weeks into boxing. Sparring and training 3 hours every Sunday with ex preofessional welterweight. You and him are well aligned in coaching approach so I find your videos fit nicely. I’m mainly working on my jab so far. I’ve got the bug. I can’t learn enough now. Working on my fitness all the time and I’m coming on with my technique… so much to learn… day at a time. Thanks again for really clear visuals and verbals.

I’m 42 and I’ve just got into kickboxing. Yes, I know it’s not just boxing. I’ve been loving videos like this because the techniques transfer. My biggest struggle is footwork. I struggle with balance due to being an amputee. Which is also why I’ve been doing so much research on striking. I’ve found a few videos pertaining to movement that I’ve found helpful, but it’s been a fun struggle trying to figure it out. I’ve found all the videos from this channel very helpful so far.

Excellent breakdown. Definitely going to refer our beginner students to this video to give them an idea of what punches we'll primarily be working on over the course of our classes. =) Regarding the Bolo punch, I like to explain it as an "uppercut to the body". Strictly speaking this is nonsense (because the punch doesn't go very far up), but the bio-mechanical execution is very similar to a rear uppercut.

Hi Tony, I've been following your channel for some time now and, by far, you produce the best content on these topics on KZbin -- you do such a good job of communicating in a way that is technical but practical that I really appreciate. I was wondering if i could get your thoughts (and perhaps, can you do a video) on how to manage training in order to suit your strengths and goals -- strength vs. agility vs. endurance. Acknowledging that they're all important in boxing and fighting, sometimes you have to put emphasis on one rather than the other, depending on your physical attributes (eg. size, weight, height, reach, etc.), what you're training for (eg. boxing vs. self defense), and economics (time, resources, space to train). What would you suggest would be the way to make those decisions on what to emphasize and perhaps provide calisthenic exercises (or at least, exercises that do not require extensive/expensive equipment) to improve those aspects.

Great teaching and got a lot out of it. I really appreciate you going over the weight distribution of the feet and how you transition the weight to increase impact for them, however being very fond of % numbers I would have liked if you made it super technical and go over %-ages for every move. Although I have some martial arts experience I could tell a good chunk of your more subtle, finer points were lost on me and would appreciate if you had a guy to pose with the guard, spacing, and footwork shown more clearly. I do my 1,2,3,4 training a bit different. I teach to take a tiny step with the lead foot and the jab with the foot and punch meeting at the same time. With the second punch I do not teach to get on your toes yet but to slid the back foot back to your base stance. This is for absolute maximum speed with fast quick foot movement and punches. Then comes the third punch being the hook and this punch comes from your big toe, your hips, your waste, your shoulder and most importantly you turn your hand over, and then you get up on your toes for the 4th punch and hit hard. The 1, 2 is just a set up for the 3, 4. If your throwing a hook to the body then the form your showing is good but if your throwing it to the head you need to turn it over. So the top of your hand should be at the top. Just pointing that out.

A yo just a specific question: you mentioned to twist your body whilst in the boxing stance to avoid being a bigger target, but what do we do when we're fighting peek-a-boo? Isn't mike tyson be a bigger target while fighting too? Because i don't see him twisting his body, instead i see him bopping his whole body left and right whilst still keeping his body unrotated (while not punching obviously)
@sloijen2 жыл бұрын
The peek-a-boo boxing style is more squared indeed. He did want his opponents to throw punches, so, he could counter them. Tyson got the power from his punches from slipping and throwing his weight behind it. He slips, generates power, then comes back with an unexpected combination against his way taller opponents. Tysons style is one of the most difficult ones to learn, you got to know how to dodge the punches or you will get hurt. He does rotate his body, the man is just so fast that you barely will see it unless you slow it down. His whole boxing stance is so balanced, that it did perfectly work for him.
@bobmango84722 жыл бұрын
@@sloijen Nice comment, thanks. Neatly explained it. I do know he rotates his body, just when punching. I was asking about when he wasn't punching, his normal stance, there which he isn't rotating. One thing i love about Tyson is how he leans in towards his punches and pushes through them, having the opponents absorb all that energy. And the number one Tyson aspect imo was how frantically, constantly he moved around - he never stopped. He was like a damn machine. That's what's protected him so much and allowed him to attack imo: Perfectly combining offence and defence. 99% of boxers box stably, and not frantically like that.
@ispeciprasebaunko1112 жыл бұрын

Parallel as in it's pointing 90 degrees to the right? I feel like you might lose some of the explosiveness of the punch but I am having a hard time imagining this
