I went to a Scott Stokely clinic and my biggest takeaway was that everyone is either a windmill or a pendulum person (aka loading up over the top or loading up down and around). I had been doing a windmill and he switched me to a pendulum and I instantly gained around 50 feet by the very next throw dude is legit a miracle worker. One extra detail is that for a pendulum person start with the top of the disc facing outwards and for a windmill start with the back of the disc facing outwards

The biggest thing that has helped me is "pinching" the disc. Everyone talks about the different grip options, but only Bens Big Drive talked about making sure that you're pinching your fingers against each other on your grip. This got me ultimately to end up changing my grip from two finger stacked grip where I had a hard time pinching the disc with my thumb and index finger and I switched to the Paul McBeth style grip where I now pinch my thumb on the disc against my index with my middle finger as the fulcrum point and man what a difference. The disc no longer comes out early and nose up every time. Now, I'm going to implement the things you discussed in this video with what I'm already doing and hopefully go from my max of about 300' of forehand distance to closer to 350-375'. Thanks for the help!

The best tip I got was to actually lean my body over my shot slightly so that I'm not throwing full sidearm. It was from a guy who used to be a baseball player and his pitching coaches used to have him throw with 3/4 arm position. Translating to a disc having to be flat he actually leans (I do too now) over his disc so that the disc is flat but his arm is 3/4. I was throwing almost 100 feet further after just a few days switching from fully sidearm to 3/4.

Right now I throw an old first run vulcan for a hyzerflip and I throw a rive and a ballista pro. What I do on an over stable disc is hold it slightly nose down but when i throw right it I put a lot of rist action and lift the nose into a slightly nose up and turn over on it the disc then it turns left for most of flight then fades out.

This was nice to watch. My forehands turn into a hot mess when I try to put real power in it. They frequently come out on an extreme hyzer angle. So far, I only really use forehand for utility/scramble cause it's the only distance I can control the angle but I'm slowly upping the distance at which I'll use it. Gonna be putting some serious work into my forehands soon.

The thing that unlocked the forehand power for me was when I started to show the top of the disc to the target look at some of the top forehand distance throwers Nate sexton, Chris Clemons, and Austin Hannom. Now I know Chris and Austin have baseball backgrounds as do I so that might be correlated but I found that allowed be to put more power on it and still come out clean. Also mini tip of bending over the disc and releasing it lower. 🤷‍♂️Hope that those might help either way love the channel and purpose keep doing what you are doing.

honestly the Eagle tip of cocking back your wrist was probably my biggest help. I would encourage you to work on that. The Nate Sexton hop, havent tried it but i want to. I love baseball and played it a lot in my youth. A lot of outfielders coming in on a fly ball or a grounder will catch the ball and hop on their back foot and throw themselves forward while throwing the ball, it generates a much stronger throw. You probably already knew that.

One thing that I really focused on when I was learning.my forehand game was when exploding with the hips I make sure they come all the way through and finish with my momentum still moving forward. In your shots you come through the hips but when you see your leg finish out to the right like that I feel like your pulling your energy your creating away from the shot. When you see a baseball pitcher throw they explode and land forward same thing to me translated to the forehand shot. So basically I'm suggesting trying to get those hips through and not really anchor yourself to the side when you follow through might help a but. Hopefully that helps and love the content

Note how you are always falling over toward the right tee side in your finish, so you aren't shifting or getting balanced or braced up properly on the front leg. You can also loosen up and lag your arm/disc more into a wider release like Long Toss Drill, you kind of keep your arm/disc more retracted in and tight like t-rex. I'd link some vids, but youtube usually deletes comments with links.

@@TheNitrohurrikane4 That helps thanks. I'm decent forehand player, but I haven't put as much as effort to fix the throwing form, than backhand players usually do. Best tip for me was to get rid of the stacked finger grip. Instead, tuck the index finger just “below” the middle finger, with both of those fingers on the rim. Feels more natural and gets the disc out on an angle that seems better, and reduces disc wobble.

Independent of what you already went over in terms of using your legs/more under stable discs the thing that I think really translates into more distance for me is rotations you put on the disc/decreasing off axis torque. This is reaaally important when getting distance as the more rotation you get on the disc the more resistant it is to fading back out at the end of its flight if you’re throwing a full distance flex shot. What I do to get more spin is simple. Just work on being able to throw my understable putters with good spin and not letting them wobble at all. When you work on your release like this with a putter when you pick up a driver the release will carry over and you’ll be able to get waaay cleaner snap on the disc. Cleaner snap=more rotation and more distance. I also think this is a big reason a lot of players struggle to throw forehands farther because they go straight to overstable discs and use them to mask their bad form/poor release and they have tons of OAT and lack of spin in their throw. Also I should point out what makes a good release which is basically all shoulder, elbow, and wrist. Power comes from the legs but the release in a forehand is all from the arm/wrist. I practice keeping my wrist cocked leading with the elbow and just throwing nice and easy shots feeling each one come off the tip of my middle finger cleanly. The further I throw the more I use my legs until I’m up to about 250-300 feet which is about my max usable distance with a putter forehand without burning it over. The whole time I’m just focusing on snapping the disc, making sure there isn’t OAT on it/wobble, and that I’m using my hips more and more when I’m throwing further.

This is gold Josh! I’ll definitely have to try throwing 300 with a putter 🤯
@joshdowden494
@joshdowden494 2 жыл бұрын
@@TrashPandaDiscGolf I’m not 100% if I’m hitting 300. I know it’s def above 250 and prob somewhere in between there. it’s all about the snap! Once you get that down things won’t turn and burn on you. Keep your release on the angle you’re throwing and feel it snap off your middle finger. The cleaner you are the more stable the disc will be and the further it will go. It takes a lot of time to get that amount of touch, but it will happen. Also, make sure you’re throwing shorter distance too and just focusing on snap and just slowly building up. Don’t increase your distance unless it’s coming out of your hand clean. Just think about how far ultimate players throw an ultra star. They’re way flippier than a disc golf putter. That’s how I learned how to throw a forehand it’s carried over tremendously to disc golf.

I have the tip for your 400ft, but be carful it's going to add a lot of torque so. Warm up! If you look at your non throwing arm it's all over the place. What you need to do is have more of leading arm in the swing like a tennis player serving a ball, the arm will up to set the ball and then start the lead of the rotation, this it a little like what you should do but use your elbow, act like your going to hit something behind you, that is going to attack you ninja style. When you get the timing down this will help you get more of the whip and snap you need for that 400ft mark. GL, and I hope this help you.

Biggest thing for me to get distance is to have a good extension on the arm so I can be smooth coming through and not put unecessary strain on the arm. Comparing myself to most others out on the course I probablly have a very slow arm speed but I think the long reach gives more time to accelerate so it dosent look as violent, and sure dosent feel violent. Also really over emphasising the lull the curtain movement with the off arm gets the shoulders away from the target and loads them up. For me a sustainable form comes first. Getting distance is nice but being able to throw 100m everyday is alot more fun then having 150m but then shortly give up the sport.

Love the video, and I have some forehand tips! I’m no pro, I’m terrible at backhand and putting, but I do have a decent forehand. Here’s some context. I consistently throw 420ft forehands. My farthest throw on flat ground with no wind was 485ft. My farthest throw on flat ground with a tail wind was 500 ft (20ft past hole 14 at Bird’s Nest). The most important and most difficult thing to get right with the forehand throw has to do with the shoulder, upper arm, forearm, wrist, and fingers. YES, a good run up and a loaded-spring-like hip rotation add distance - a lot of distance… BUT those things aren’t the basis of a powerful forehand. Purely to illustrate my point, I can throw over 300ft sitting down. Here’s what I think about before every power forehand throw. The first thing I think about when I’m on the tee-box (or in the fairway) is my grip. It’s super important to have a tight grip that causes the disc to press hard against the webbing between your thumb and pointer finger. I also lick and dry my finger tips to increase friction as any slippage greatly reduces distance and accuracy with the forehand throw. Everyone’s hands are different, so it’s a good idea to experiment with different grips - I prefer the power grip. The next things I think about before throwing far is simultaneously disc release angle and disc flight path. I don’t consciously think about my form when throwing forehand - which I know is next to impossible when trying to improve forehand form. I definitely agree with throwing under stable discs to achieve max distance. At 5280ft elevation my go-to max distance distance right now is the shryke. How I personally developed a good forehand - I grew up throwing ultimate frisbees forehand. I took an ultimate frisbee on hikes, to school, church - basically everywhere. Throwing ultimate frisbees countless times allowed me to transition effortlessly into disc golf, providing me with both power and touch. Obviously, there’s lots of ways to practice forehand form, but one of the easiest and most fun ways is just playing catch with an ultimate frisbee. Learning how to throw an ultimate frisbee forehand very hard without it turning over will make throwing under stable disc golf discs seem effortless. Throwing forehand is a mechanical skill, so practicing the forehand motion in as many ways as possible will go a long way - skipping rocks, playing ping pong, throwing baseballs, and so on.

Do not worry I can't even throw a Valkyrie or a less gram DX Dragon forehand or even the most US discs like a Wedge or others I do with almost everything a forehand flip to roller off to the right after 50-75 feet on driving ones. I can't do forehands past approach at 50--75 feet and in for some reason and have done a putter forehand for a turbo replacement since I can't do a normal turbo due to hand size. I sucked at the forehand after I grew from 5 foot to 5 foot 2 my current height in high school, I could no longer do them and did a turn and burn but I have this amazing turnover to the left or a power left shot I can use with a Star Archon or even an OS mold like the Champion Destroyers if I release later then what most people do. The correct way for the power left turning shot is I power up as if a Distance Driver on a DX Dragon and release only a tad late for a sharper US shot or use my Z Archer for this sweeping shot that just gets more and more US fade as the shot goes on.

Right when you engage your hips you dip and drive your shoulder through while still keeping elbow first and that big snap at the end. Trying to finish perfectly square might be taking a touch of momentum away at the very end. My Right foot finishing 20-30 degrees past square on full power. You gotta let er rip in this this air. I’ve seen videos to throw under stable disc to throw further backhand but not for forehand. When I throw an under stable disc it just fades left the whole time “sidewinder” with way less distance. I throw an under stable it goes straight and turns right slightly at the end like When I throw my axiom disc distance driver “DEFY” side arm it goes perfectly straight and finishes slightly right averaging 350 to 400 every time unless the dreaded 🌳comes in play. It has the same flight #’s as a wraith, but the wraith curves left then comes hard right with a skip with less distance. I’m guessing I should put maybe some hyzer on the sidewinder?🤷‍♂️

It's definitely worth a shot! And it's not as much that you'll get different flights (though you will), but that you can achieve the same flight with much more ease! (My buddy Robbie C suggests something with a -2 | 2 flight rating 🔥)

I struggle to throw a forehand with any kind of power. I flip everything over bad, even my most stable disc's thrown on heavy hyper flip up and over. I'm going to do some field work soon and try different discs, but I can't imagine my understable discs doing so hot.

Best thing for me was to find the right grip, for me it ended up being a one finger grip, as it was the only way for me to get a clean release on my forehand throws. Coming from a baseball background, I have always used a crow hop (Sexton hop as you refer to it) as it is just second nature for me now. Now I just need to get my backhand distance up to snuff with my forehand throws!

I am excited to implement the hip mobilization. I too can throw just about as far stand still as off the tee (yes run ups should only be used for teeing). My method has been to learn to control my most flippy disc sidearm and then transfer that smooth form with power to my understable drivers. Allowing myself to trust the flip up turn over to get me easy distance. My favourite disc for this kind of shot is my Sphinx.

One tip that helped me was my buddy said push the disc before I snap my wrist. Before I was all wrist with no accuracy, engaging my elbow to push first gave me distance and accuracy cause I was able to slow down my throw and stay relaxed without muscling the disc. Also the stomp, on up shots or stand stills this has improved my distance, ill take one step back so I can turn my hips and stomp my lead foot to engage my whole body.

Good video and congratulations on your improvement, but a quick comment. Telling someone to engage their hips isn't exactly telling what engaging the hips means. Do you twist them? push them forward? recoil them during upper body rotation? So this video tells us what you did, but not HOW you did it. I'd like to know . . . .

I would love to work on my forehand more, but I find that even after just a handful of forehands in a row, I start getting bad elbow pain. I'm only 26 so I'm not like...thaaat old haha. In tournaments where I have to rely on forehand for 36 holes a day, it can get bad enough to be bothering me between shots. Weirdly, it usually doesn't hurt when I'm throwing it, but after the fact, between holes. My best guess is tennis elbow (disc golfer's elbow??) , but I'm not sure. I can't tell if it's just something that will get better with time and with more throws, or if there's something else at play, which would make working on it more and more only exacerbate the problem. Anybody have any ideas or things I can work on for this?

Quick thought. It seems like you're not getting full hip/torso rotation because you are planting into your heel. As a result, it looks like your body weight can't come forward finishing the rotation. Try transferring your weight forward onto your forefoot during the throw, just like throwing a ball.
