*I was pleased with Trilene mono line **enjoyable.fishing** recommend performance (25 lb. test) because it offers smooth casting with no tangles/bird's nest in the spool. And, knots can be tied effectively with ease. I would recommend.*

Yes of course you can. I have caught some of my biggest and most pressured carp on mono hooklinks. Just make sure they are long enough for the breaking strain of the line. I'll use 10" hooklinks for 12lb mono for big carp. If you want it shorter, you should use a higher breaking strain. I hope that helps.

Great video, i like 15lb flouro leader material in rivers. The stiff flouro resists rig tangles I get with more supple lines when fishing eddies and current seams. 17-20 lb mono mainline. Heavier flouro is almost too stiff to tie snells on small hooks.

Hi Myles i just made my first hair rig by watching this video, thanks for that. I actually messed up my first attempt due to a small knot some how forming on the line about an inch or so from the hook as i was about to do the knotless knot! think this was due to having a really long length of line and i did it with fluorocarbon so as you know its quite springy and can twist easily. Second attempt when i attached the silicone on the line with the hook in it, i made sure i cut only just over a foot of line from the spool so it was easier to manage and i was able to straighten out the line before running the line through the eye for the knotless knot. One small mistake i did make was the silicone i used was a little too thick so it slides on the hook a bit but i know for next time to use the next diameter down (i have a Preston silicone dispenser), Its still ok though once its in place how i want it, it'll stay there once the line is tight. I used a Guru size 14 hook, fluorocarbon is 6.4lb strength the Drennan Supplex stuff i like it. One thing though to be fair i need that tool you have as i find it so fiddly attaching those tiny dumbell bait stops on to the hair so i think i'll buy one from Solar tackle online. I thought about making hair rigs with those Drennan push stops where you tie one to the loop and then it stays on but i already bought two packs of those dumbell style stops so i want to make use of those now. Thanks again great videos you make. Just ordered that Solar tackle 5 in 1 baiting needle on ebay cost £14.99 seems worth it as you get the four different size needles as well as the bait stops on the handle.

Hi Simon, yes it would work fine but I would use mono and not fluorocarbon as it doesn't like the knotless knot so much in the lighter breaking strains. Otherwise it will work just fine. I will add though that side hooked plastic maggot or caster similar to what I have done in one of my other videos but just scaled down a bit is what I'd do rather than hair rig it. I'd keep the hair rig for pellets and mini boilies.

Alright mate all I use Berkley 12kg fluro to make my carp rigs always blow back stays stiff and disappears on the lake bed not a fan of braided or coated braid either tend to use size 2 4 and 6 wide gape short shank with slight in turned eye turns and hooks beautifully nails them 9 outa 10 times 👍

Will do! Do you have any advice on using sweet corn on a hair rig? I am trying to think of a way to float the sweet corn. I was thinking about a small piece of yellow foam or some yellow power bait. Thanks!

Hi, yes definitely. In fact my most popular video on my channel is a rig called the Corn Aligner. It is super simple and works for me and tons of other people. Take a look at my channel and look for the Corn Aligner rig. I hope that helps.

Yes you can, but be aware that fluorocarbon doesn't really like being tied with a knotless knot. You might want to use a higher breaking strain than you normally would.

I like to tie to a ring swivel or create a loop for the swivel/lead end allowing it to hinge. Keep it simple ;-)

im pretty new to the carp fishing. I am interested in tying up my own rigs. the silicone tube you use, to set the angle, .. where would I get it and how do I know what to get? ... I usually fish with a size 16 or 14 hook.

To be honest I use mono for this kind of rig. I'll use 10lb for doubles and 20lbs and 12lb for bigger ones. If you're chasing monsters then 15lb. If I want to use a combi rig then I'll use fluorocarbon in 20lb.

@MylesGascoyne8 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul. The boil stops come out the back of a Solar baiting needle. You can get them on the Solar Tackle webshop at Solar247 I think. The braid I like to use is Korda Supernatural in the fine diameters and Solar Unleaded in heavier ones. I hope that helps.

Iv got some esp ghost soft in 15lb... will the knotless knot be ok is it not too stiff? Wich baits are best suited to these?
@MylesGascoyne10 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes the esp fluoro is ok with a knotless knot. For big carp I don't think it's too stiff. I mean 20s and 30s as your target. If you are fishing for mostly singles and doubles I would go with 10lb or 12lb. I think it's better with larger baits like 14mm or 18mm boilies. A small light bait like maze or a single tiger I think needs a more subtle hooklink material. You can of course tie some supple material to the end and make a combi rig which is a favourite of mine.
@stuandkids11 жыл бұрын
thanks for that. ive had problems with flouro in the past breaking at the knots. if your tying a swivel what knot would you recommend?

Can you use normal fluorocarbon mainline for making fluorocarbon hair rigs?
@skyler69611 жыл бұрын
I like to fish for bream and tench, and use a 6lb mainline to 4lb mono hook link. Using a feeder and hooks about 16-12. I have never used a hair rig before but want to try it with some imitation corn or casters. Would this work with such a low breaking strain line?

Hi Myles, what is the size of the silicon tubing used
@nenzy41868 жыл бұрын
myles you have taught me alot ive only watched 2 videos, what size hook do you use?
@MylesGascoyne8 жыл бұрын
Hi, I like to use small hooks but it must be balanced with the rods and line you use. I tend to use softer rods and mono mainline. That gives plenty of stretch and cushion so I can get away with smaller hooks. Try tying a size 10 onto the line, pull it into a piece of wood and then stand back with your rod and pull. (make sure there is no lead attached) you'll be amazed at how hard you can pull. In general I'll fish with a size 10 or up to an 8 in weedy water for big fish.

Hi could you recommend me a hook type to use with mono for barbel fishing .I was told you can't use hooks with a in turn eyes with mono .
@MylesGascoyne7 жыл бұрын
I see the reasoning for that but I've used Korda Wide Gapes with mono for years. I'd look for a hook with a beaked point and a straight eye that has a dull finish to it. I think ESP/Drennan do some.
@sme707 жыл бұрын
Myles Gascoyne .Thanks for the reply I will have a look for the hook types you said.
@cns1807846 жыл бұрын
I'm using Guru MWG size 14 barbless hooks for the hair rigs i've made. Wide gape and has that beaked point very nice hooks (also has straight eye).
@MylesGascoyne11 жыл бұрын
To be honest with a hook of that size you may not need the silicone. The match guys that I know certainly don't bother. If you're using a size 12 or 10 hook I certainly would use the silicone. I use rig silicone from Solar Tackle and it's always available from The Tackle Box at Dartford. tackle box.co.uk
@peternufc19817 жыл бұрын
how long would you leave the hook length or dose it vary
@MylesGascoyne7 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete, with mono the length of line will be influenced by two things. Firstly and probably more importantly is breaking strain. Remember that mono needs stretch to to protect it. You know that if you cast up a tree at 50 yrds that when you pull for a break it stretched and even 10lb mainline seems really strong. But if you take just 6 inches of that 10lb mono and pull hard it will snap. So, if you're carp fishing for 30lb fish for example you could use 10lb mono but I'd recommend 12" hook link. Or if you want a shorter hook link then you'll want to use 15lb for example. The other influence is what bait you're using. If it's boillies that are spread out and the carp are moving a foot or so between picking up each bait. Then you can use a long hook link. If you're fishing over a bed of hemp and pellet for example then you're want a really short hook link because the carp are not moving their head around to much. Remember you need the fish to suck in the bait and come tight to the lead to get the hook in. I hope all that makes sense and is helpful. Generally I use mono hook links for boillie fishing and short braided ones for particles.
