I love tying quilts. My tip is to find the smallest needle that the yarn will fit through (the eye). If the eye of the needle is very large it’s more difficult to pull it through the layers of fabric.

When it comes to threading the needle with yarn, I highly recommend using a small strip of paper. Fold the strip in half, with the tail of your yarn in the middle, stick the unfolded end into the eye, pull through, and then it's threaded! I'm an avid crocheter and I use this method to help weave in my ends

Hi Sherrill. Thanks for show this method of tying a quilt, it’s how my mom taught me. She never did see her quilts together, she tied them. My mom did her quilts in the 70’s & 80’s and I remember when she taught me in 2000. I have some of her unfinished quilt tops and she passed right before Covid. I was undecided how I want to finish them, but I think some I will tie since that’s how she would have done it:) Thank you

I love this quilt. I made one this way, and thought my yarn was too widely spaced because of the way it cinched up; so I made closer stitches. However, I really like the way yours looks. The cinching gives it another dimension, taking a “basic” quilt to a new level. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us.

Thank you. I am ripping out the quilting on a quilt I was to give LAST Christmas. The quilt top is fine, but the quilting is very puckered mostly because I didn't follow the rules and spun it around many times (on a small machine) to go around squares as I wanted different color thread for different squares. I thinking at this point I will tie it with embroidery floss. I think square knots shouldn't come out. I can switch colors easily. It will be much faster and more fail proof. I made many quilts before but too many factors played into this quilting being more difficult.

I love your channel and I also teach sewing. I have a method to tie a really strong knot that I would love to show you. I learned from a lady in her 90s about 30 years ago. Is there a way that I can send you a little video on how to create a super strong hand tied knot? It’s almost like you do it now but before you tie down the Final loop loop the end through one more time as you’re pulling it down you’ll see two loops that will move towards each other as you pull and kiss each other this is a super strong and very flat knot that never comes out.

@SparkyOne549 3 жыл бұрын
@@sameoldsonganddance I didn’t mean to point out anything. I had never heard of anyone doing it that way. I was hoping you could tell me an easier way of doing it lol But now that you mention shifting, not only will it shift, when it’s washed, it will fall apart anywhere you haven’t sewn, after washing it or general use. That’s why batting companies recommend stitching at specific inches. It’s not just for aesthetics, batting will fall apart.

I think you would want a needle with a sharp tip and only as large of an eye as necessary. For example, not the kind used to sew knitting together because they are blunt and big. I might look at crewel stitches to see if they are sharp as I don't remember. And I would make a square knot. I am not sure if colored cotton yarn or floss will bleed. I am intending to try try red floss and will test it before I use it. Years ago I heard you could set the color with vinegar I would see what people say and test it first.
