HOW TO HAND TIE YOUR QUILT AND NOT USE BINDING

You have an amazing craft room! Plus all the shelves! It's great! I am working in my 3rd quilt. This is a 30" x42" donation lap quilt for a veteran at the VA. I just finished tying it with yarn. I love your suggestion to use plyers to pull the yarn through. Wish I had thought of that. It is hard on the hands to pull the yarn through the fabric and batting. I pinned it in the floor which was hard on my back. I tied it on a bed with a cutting mat slipped under it so I would not tie the bed to the quilt. I am surprised that you did not put more ties in the quilt. My batting package says to put the ties in every 4". I enjoyed your video. Thank you. Pat in FL.

Just used this method on my King quilt yesterday~Love it!!! I love your quilt designs~ I like the use of pliers to pull the needle through idea~ I have FM, so after a bit my hands start to flare up. Using the inexpensive rubber Thimbles (2= One on the thumb, one on the forefinger) works pretty well for projects like this.

I find that you are very young to do the sandwich on the floor!! Me, my back is yackkkkk! So, I put my backing on the wall, straight and add the batting and after the top, all on the wall. I don’t know what my wall will be in some years when I will take off the flannel but I pinned on the wall to! You are very very good to do this on the floor . Lucky you and keep your young fitness!!

The pinwheels are perfect. It looks like a good snuggle quilt. My husband almost got into golf, but he had too much Alabama hillbilly in him. He couldn't afford both golf and hunting. Not with his 3 boys he had custody of, me, my son from my first marriage and our daughter together. 😂😂😂

Thanks for showing your process. On the acking, I would have placed the pieced narin the middle somewhere instead of st the top so the edge would be easier to work with. Great job all in all!

I'm just finishing a tied quilt. I wish I had seen this before I started. I've put in a WHOLE lot more ties and I used crochet cotton thread instead of the yarn. Sad face-my hands are soooo sore. LOL Live and learn!

Hi Lynn- Yes! You absolutely could use embroidery thread. I have used it in the past. I would just make sure it's a bit thicker with a couple of more strands.

Just made my furst t shirt quilt where majority of shirts are that jersey fabric not tees. It is fie my granddaughters bf for hs senior night. I thought i would do it this way so rhank you fir showing how. Question..do you think its ok to go thru the nylon type fBric wirh rhe needle to tie ir will it make holes

I just pieced my first quilt top and boy did I go full in! I did a king size! Much to my surprise, I'm very proud of the job I did so far. I've been struggling trying to figure out how to quilt this monster but just discovered the quilt tying and absolutely appreciate your video. Down to earth and very tutorial. However I do have a question that hopefully you can help me with. I am doing a minky backing and wanting to know if this will work? Also I have seen videos of some saying not to use a batting if you use minky. Any suggestions or advice would be great!

Hi Crystal- Congratulations on your king sized quilt! What a terrific accomplishment! As for using Minky, yes, you can use Minky. But...Minky is extremely difficult to work with because it moves and slides, ALOT! The reason why people don’t recommend Minky with batting is because of the movement of the fabric. It can be done though. You will have to pin, ALOT, and try not to sew the pins in the process. If you use Minky with the tie off method, I would not recommend using batting. If you use flannel or fleece, I would highly recommend batting. There is less movement in those fabrics. I wish you luck with whichever you choose! Happy quilting! 🧵❤️

Do you think this process would be ok to do any not tie and stitch in the ditch? I do love this method for tying! I’ve done two this way. No I want to try my first stitch in the ditch. Or shall I just sandwich and do it normal way with binding? Thanks

Glenda- I think you could do it just fine. 😊 I would recommend making a small mock-up with scraps and testing out the method to see if you like it before doing it on your full size quilt.
