There are only a handful of the colors available of powdered dye are a true single/primary color. The remainder of those 100's of color options are mixtures of various primary colors. The ice allows the powdered dye to slowly "bleed" into the fabric as well as to "split" into the various original primary colors giving a depth to the design that wouldn't be possible with standard liquid dyeing. Since there is a greater pigment/powder to water ratio than is typical of liquid dyeing, the color saturation is also typically much greater than is possible with most standard liquid dyeing.

Yes, you can use liquid dye if you prefer. The difference is that liquid dye will blend with the surrounding liquid dye colors while powdered dye will both blend with surrounding dye colors as well as separate into it's component colors, resulting in greater depth of color.

Can't blame ya, I went through a blue phase two when I was in middle school. Don't get me wrong, I still love various shades blue color wise, but recently I've been drawn in to different shades of gold, silver, grey, black, white, and especially red, and sometimes lime green , yellow-green, and various shades of pink and orange.
