How to Tie Dye a SIDEWINDER SCRUNCH T-Shirt in 1 HOUR! - Complete Step by Step Tutorial

Today I am demonstrating how to tie-dye a SIDEWINDER SCRUNCH T-Shirt in 1 HOUR using the H.W.I. (Hot Water Irrigation Technique) tie-dye method. This is a step by step tie-dye tutorial video where I cover the entire process beginning with the drawing of the design on to the shirt. After that I pleat fold the design line and bind the fold with rubber bands. To finish up the tying portion of the process, I then scrunch and rubber band the remaining material of the shirt.
Now that the shirt is all tied up it's time to apply the fiber reactive procion dye powders (colors chosen are displayed in the video) directly on top of the shirt. After that I apply a thin layer of soda ash on top of the dye powders for vibrancy, and then head on over to the sink to apply the hot water. For proper hot water application I first use a spray bottle for a light mist to help saturate the dye without it blowing all over, and then I use my garden pump sprayer that has been filled with water heated to 160 degrees Fahrenheit for proper saturation.
For the final steps I first let the shirt sit 20 minutes, then give it a good rinse, and jump right on into the reveal our new tie-dye SIDEWINDER SCRUNCH T-Shirt. I hope you enjoy and as always...Happy Tie Dyeing!

Thank you! Yes especially me lol. It’s more powder for HWI and ice dye…liquid dye in a 4 oz bottle is typically 1 teaspoon and then water.

No unfortunately the temp should be at least 160 or more and I have been using this garden sprayer for at least a year and I haven’t had an issue with it yet ☺️💙

Whats the difference between HWI and Ice dying? Do the results turn out differently with hot vs cold water?

Fun Endeavors did a great HWI vs ice dye comparison video about 8 months ago. Ice dye projects take much longer to complete and results in more color splits with crisper color borders. HWI can be completed quickly and the colors bleed into each other more. I think of ice dye being like a Van Gogh. HWI is like Edvard Munch. 😀

Hi and thank you for your question. Kyle did an excellent job of answering. In my personal experience I have found that the same color splits can be achieved with HWI but the colors are not as vibrant so the major difference is the time needed for proper saturation. 24 hours minimum for ice dye vs 20 minutes for HWI.
