That’s a stellar idea. I am a fly tying nut so I make my hair rigs by building the hair rig loop, do the normal knot less knot and the I use my UV glue to stick it to the hook shank and hit it with a black light for 15 seconds and they hold up really well. The UV resin will outlast the sharpness of the hook in my case.

This video was extremely helpful! As a beginner carp fisherman (using euro-methods) I've been searching for an easy to understand tutorial for making a hair rig as I use them all the time! Thanks - Joe

Good video. I tie my hair rigs the same way basically. A detail I like to make sure to watch for everytime is when I go back through the eye after wrapping I make sure the line is wrapped around the bend in the shank where the eye starts and not the opening of the eye where the metal ends. It makes me feel better about the line not rubbing against the end of the metal where there could be an edge. One other thing is when I tie my loops I give the knot a couple extra twists before passing the end loop through the knot loop for some extra strength, especially with "slippery" braided line. Kind of like when you do 10-12 twists with a normal knot using braid instead of 6 with mono.

I like it. You can do something similar by trapping the hair under a tiny piece of silicone tubing, further down the hook.

This is one of the ways I do it. When doing the down shank wraps, I will use my fingernail to snug the wraps tightly together. I doubt that matters, but pleases the OCD.

Looks good tom! I like that tying vice. Looks like it makes tying a rig alot easier. Managed to put a few fish on the bank every month this winter. Looks like it's going to be an early warm up in pa.

Tied a few following this video, came out great. After i tied the first one the rest were so quick. These L2 hooks are buy 2 get 1 free on cabelas website right now, so I've got plenty to tie. Need the weather to warm up so I can get out after carp now, thank you for this video!

I’m always trying to improve every aspect of my carping set up. I’ve always tied my hair rigs in essentially the same way as you (snelling with a knotless knot that I wrap past the hook point), but I wasn’t including the “reverse over wrap” of 4-5 wraps. Therefore my snells would ride up the shank when I pulled them tight. I’ll be trying your method which appears to help keep the hair exit from the hook deeper on the shank. I’m expecting that will improve my hook up rate per your comments early in this super informative and easy to follow video! Thanks as always Tom!!

Just read a couple of Joe Bruce's books on carping from a kayak and tidal carping, and he ties his much the same way using #2 Gamakatsu offset point circle hooks. The main point is that he wraps his almost identically to your method. I've ordered some of those hooks and I'll give his method a try. He doesn't use a fixed lead, but lets the hook link move freely through the lead on the belief that a fixed bolt rig can spook carp and lose bites/hookups. Not sure if that's true or not, but he certainly has been successful with that rig, so hard to argue with results! I'm planning on fishing one rod rigged his way to see what results I achieve.

It looks like your hook point has been touched up with a file or stone. Just a different color and shine than the rest of the hook metal.I know you've mentioned that you toss your dull hooks so I wss just wondering if you've found a way to resharpen dull points.

Not sure if a few more wraps of braid is any more expensive than either silicon tubing (which is not commonly found in the US) or small shrink wrap.
