I found an old childhood photo from when I started doing artistic roller skating and noticed I had tied my skates in all the wrong ways: short, textured socks, loose laces tied only up to the second hook, extra lace tied around the ankle etc etc 😅🤦‍♀️ eventually I did learn how to tie them properly!

While I no longer skate (both rinks shut down) I do ride my horse and wear paddock boots. They are very similar to skate boots. I am going to try your lacing and tightening method for two very important reasons. First to preserve myself and my boots, and to prevent my beloved jokester of a horse from untying them! he can do it while I am riding... or he is a prankster! Oh wow, I do mine totally differently! I do a half knot (doubled, so it stays better) before the hooks. Then I hook the first 3 sets of hooks and then do another half knot (doubled) and a bow. I put the bow loops over the top hooks and pull tight. Then any remaining lace, I make into more bows and hook over other hooks just to tuck them away!

Not sure exactly what you mean by ‘side to side’. Do you mean inside the boot? Your foot shouldn’t really move around at all inside the boot. You want almost complete contact between your foot and the boot at all times.

i tie my skates like this, but my hook pattern (bottom to top) is 1-2-3-1-4 bc thats how the guy at the skate shop did them lol. i will say, i am definitely breaking the ankles down faster than they should be, but thats bc ~240 pounds is well outside the standard skater weight and i have more than the expected amount of force to put in versus the average new skater, but oh well these will last however long they last

As someone who used hockey skates since i was 3 (i’m 12), how tight should the top be? Cause i know in hockey skates, the ankle is the part where it needs to be the tightest. Thanks in advance!
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 4 жыл бұрын
The tightest part needs to be around the ankle bend, it can loosen slightly up towards the hooks, but not much, you shouldn’t be able to fit more than a finger behind the tongue.

Hey!! But when I tie my current new boots the same way, my feet are throbbing with pain at the instep (behind the toe box and in front of the ankle) and I can only skate 15 minutes. My right skate for some reason feels like I'm sliding over small pebbles and slows my left skate down. I've skated on them maybe 3 hours total since I got them sharpened. During my last session it just started feeling funny and somewhat slows my other one down. Do you know what it could be? There's a tiny ding in it from the sharpener but it doesn't seem big enough to make a difference.

@baiNEKO
@baiNEKO 5 жыл бұрын
How tightly should we continue pulling the laces as we move toward the hooks and the tops of the skates? Some skaters and ice dancers at my local rink suggested that I leave the top 2 hooks loose, so that I'm able to bend and move more easily -- They say that tying tightly all the way to the top of the boot will restrict my movement, and that I should begin to loosen up after securing my ankle area. What would you advise? I've tried it both ways, but as a beginner, I can't be sure whether I should simply get used to the tight fit at the top. Thank you! :)
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 5 жыл бұрын
The tightest part of the skate needs to be across the bend of the ankle. The very top hooks can be a little looser, but still snug, definitely not loose. But lacing the hook section a tiny bit looser than the ankle bend allows for more flex and bend whatcha can be helpful, especially for things like sit spins.
@baiNEKO
@baiNEKO 5 жыл бұрын
@@CoachJulia - Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! Yes, that's definitely when I notice the tightness at the top of the boot most: when I need to bend low (even when I'm bending for swizzles or crossovers, sometimes it feels too tight). So I'll try leaving just a little more room right at the top, until I find that balance of support and flexibility in the right places.

I have noticed that most skates tend to only come in full sizes (i.e. 6,7,8,9, etc.), whereas I wear a half size in other shoes. I had thought of layering on thicker socks to fill out the larger boot, but it sounds like that may not be the best idea. What would you recommend for those of us that fall into a half size?

Good skates come in half sizes. I wear a 4.5 in jacksons. Do not wear thick socks in figure skates.

Hi! Can you explain how skate boots should properly fit and how to help break in new skates? I’ve tired the pen/pencil rule in my boot and the pen goes down all the way to the bottom of the boot with my foot in it and snug between the shoe and my foot and I’m able to wiggle my toes pretty comfortably so I think they’re the right size, my feet just hurt quite a bit when I start to skate so I don’t know if it’s a size issue or tying issue

@CoachJulia 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I haven’t heard the pen/pencil trick before. Where are you sliding the pencil in? At the heel? It really is best not to have much wiggle room at all. My foot can’t move in my skates and I barely have wiggle room for my toes. When you say you have foot pain, is it like a cramp in your arch? If that is the case, it usually is because your foot is being pushed down, try loosening up the laces just over your arch and leaving the bend of the foot and the ankle snug.

Is there solution for this.I'm 39/40 shoe size,but my ice skates are 42.I received it as a gift,but actualy they are someone else's before me.It's complicated.Is there any chance to use them.I really want to learn how to ice skating,but I don't want to pay for ice skates,because I already have one.
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 4 жыл бұрын
Well, the best solution is really to have a pair of skates that fit properly. There are things you can do to help with this current pair, like put extra insoles in them to take up space. But keep in mind that unless your skates are the proper fit for your foot, the rocker on the blade and the toe pice will not be in the correct position under you, so it will be harder to learn some things. And if you do decide to use them, keep in mind that when you eventually do get proper fitting skates, you will have an adjustment to re- learning some things with the blade in the correct position.

I’m probably too late but one girl at my skating rink said that I should be able to fit atleast 3 fingers in the back of my boot and that only the base should be tight, but I found it easier with them tighter so I’m confused, any tips?

I can't bend my knees because the tongue is stiff. It's supposed to be flexible? How can I tell what my skates are made of? Thank you
@CoachJulia

The tongue always starts out pretty stiff. You have to work on breaking them in so that you can bend your knees better.

I know it is important to have tight and secure lace ties, but what if it’s tight to the point where I cannot bend my knees all the way?
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 3 жыл бұрын
That is where you need to 'break in' your boots, so that the leather across the ankle will bend, even when laced securely.

I get so frustrated tying my skates, this is the first wk in my skates and the lace looks like it's ripping half way. My laces shouldn't be almost ripping. I see people pulling on their laces. What is the average length of lacd for adult figure skates.
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 3 жыл бұрын
I am not really sure what the average length might be, as different sized skates will need different lengths. A thinner waxed lace might be better for you, and help prevent the ripping.

How do I know if my skates are too tight or loose? It’s my first time getting skates and I don’t know if they should fit comfortable or super snug?
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 3 жыл бұрын
When you are standing your toes should just comfortably graze the end of your skates. Not smashes up against the end of your skates, but definitely touching. You don’t want any wiggle room, but also don’t want your foot to be squeezed.

Hi my skates tongue keep sliding into the inside on the boots and I don't know what to do about it ? Does anyone have a solution ?
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 4 жыл бұрын
If you can take your skates to a shoe repair shop, they can put a hook on the tongue so that the lace from the outside of your foot can loop around it and keep the tongue from sliding in. It’s an option on custom skates, but a shoe shop should be able to do it.

As far as i know and seen it will happen to all skates eventually. It has to be snug and the laces are not stretchy so the tongue creases there. I think that's normal
