.. additionally, also thank you for a couple of specific things: firstly covering lift-arc *with no foot pedal* as I'm currently looking at buying my first MIG welder and you've made me feel a lot less worried about buying a multiprocess device that has this and thinking it's a pointless feature, and two, 40A/mm - even as a metric Brit, that's the first welding video I've seen that gives that rule-of-thumb conversion. Now I'm going to have a look to see what other videos you have :-)

Very clear, thanks. Just a suggestion - one of the problems I have is I can't always identify what I've done wrong. It would really help if in your videos you deliberately do something really badly and then show what that looks like in the finished weld. For example, show what it looks like when you don't finish off a TIG weld properly by not keeping the shield gas over the weld puddle. Then we can see what that looks like, and know how to correct it.

The copper trick was from Jody on weldingtipsandtricks. He suggested putting a piece of copper beside both at the place you are starting your weld and where you are ending it, so that you transition the arc at both ends from/to the copper.

I began tig welding twenty five years ago, having welded with gas and arc some thirty years. One of the key aspects is keeping that arc no longer than the electrode diameter, and in keeping it short, only the tip of the filler material will melt and form a drop into the puddle. A coordinated movement back and forth, like stitching with a sewing machine, provides the repeatable puddle, consistent heat melting the filler, moves the heat of the arc back and forth between reheating the puddle, then melting the filler, and allowing the drop to add to the puddle. Simply rocking back and forth, about the size of the drop of metal will provide a consistent rate of weld, penetration of the parent metal, and an even bond made with the filler rod. My technique with the puddle and heat was developed with gas welding, and the creating of the puddle in the parent metal while heating the filler rod tip, then pushing the heat into the puddle, and back in the filler rod.

I have used my lincoln ranger for the occasional field tig welding. Does hardfacing nicely and stainless food service equipment well. A copper plate is handy to scratch on when starting the arc. The copper plate can be any size but at least 1/4 inch thick. Experiment and don't expect perfection at first, excellence will come with time.

Like so many people I don't weld all that often, it could be months between projects so there isn't the opportunity to get good. Along with work, family and other responsibilities the chance to practice welding doesn't come along very often, most likely there many like me. just saying.

That is a great video ! The only thing that was not covered was lift arc on ac tig and why it is possible today but was not 25+ years ago …. But that is ok … thank you for the inspiration! Maybe i find some time to make a video like this! Great arc shot too! I like it!

@@TimWelds whenever in do welding in hospitals , assisted living etc… the maintenance guy tells me to turn high frequency off as i walk in the door … When i weld around sensitive electronics or on cars with sophisticated computers then i turn hf off as well …. And sometimes that is aluminum work … Ok, do i guess i have another point to cover … how high frequency is different from welding current and does not go the path of least resistance but travels long distances through anything metal

Excellent video. I have a PrimeWeld multiprocess machine with no foot control with the lift arc. Is it possible to do one tack at a time with lift arc? This would be for tacking in a patch to a body panel on a car. How would you do it, of possible?

Of course, if you use the copper block at the start and at the end of the weld, it will be a perfect tack, just like a sort of slow DIY pulse technique. Slow but effective.

Hello. I am one of your followers and your videos are interesting and educational, thanks for them. In one of your videos you describe how TIG-LIFT works. There you have a foot pedal to increase the spread strength (I assume). I have a Hitbox syn 200 pro and it has TIG-LIFT system. I can't get it to work, the tungsten electrode sticks to the goods and I wonder now, do I need a foot pedal¨to increase the amperage at the moment of ignition?

Great question! A foot pedal is helpful, but not essential. Some machines require just a light, quick scratch to avoid sticking. Try that. Another way to do it is to hold your gap and slide the end of the filler across the base metal allowing it to barely touch the electrode as you slide it past.

@@TimWelds Thanks for the reply. My welder cannot use a pedal as far as I can understand, however it is perfectly ok for MIG and MIG-MAG. Have enough of trying all imaginable and crazy solutions. Scratch and a bit of poking with the additive (as you describe) seems to work sometimes. However, nothing that you can use with any continuity. I think it will be a new purchase of a TIG-HF. I have been living in Thailand for many years and then I make purchases on some web, AliExpress, Amazon etc. The problem is warranty and support..
