I have this same LTX1040 2009. The body and engine are great ... it's this dang deck that gives me grief. I can't afford to buy a new mower so I really appreciate your video Taryl. I thought your antics were pretty corny until I realized that you work with the public and see this crazy all the time. You have saved me $400 because I can do it myself! New deck belt, new blades, one new idler pulley, one timing belt, beat out the bent deck,. Local shop wanted $650. 70 yrs old, female.
@russelfrantz15043 жыл бұрын
BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT: I really appreciate how Taryl breaks down diagnosing problems and advising corrections into simple "concise" steps to correct the problem. Have watched several of his videos and brought back to life a push mower and two riding mowers that were headed to the scrap yard with a minimum investment. Like some of the other previous comments ... I AIN'T NO MECHANIC!!!!! BUT .... Paid attention to what he was saying ... rewinded the video several times ... and got a lot of satisfaction turning chicken poop into chicken soup!

Just what the doctor ordered. I was given one of these LTX 1040s with a messed-up deck and didn't even know about the timing thing. This is setting my straight how to proceed. Plus the details with the part numbers and such is superb.

Ya know what Taryl? You have some of the most genuinely helpful videos on the internet. Thank you so much. My Father has this same mower and even though it makes perfect sense now, I was dumbfounded by this deck constantly throwing the belt off. It was a bent deck. I watched that repair video also today and it was everything I needed to figure out my own troubles. I hope you guys are busy as a one armed paper hanger. There's yer lunch!

I have a LTX1040, but it doesn’t have timed blades. I was about ready to return a rebuild kit based on the fact that nothing matched the parts you mentioned. For instance, they sent me a 96.5” belt. In the morning, I checked the deck and found I had the correct parts after all. I only have 2 idlers and one belt- and no interference between the blades. Don’t know how the same model has radically different decks.

He summed up the timing very nicely - "kinda stupid..." Even if you're not hitting anything, a season with heavy mowing can put it out of whack. It even says so in the manual. This is a pain. I want to cut grass, not continually maintain a mower. No more Cub Cadets for me. Nice job Taryl!! I think something is wrong when I need to come to KZbin to get the mower to cut grass.

I just got a used three blade 46" MTD. The blades look good but they are lined across form one another (not staggered apart) but the tips don't hit when they meet. Cutting the thick grass across the street they leave a narrow line where the grass is not cut quiet as low between the tips as it cuts the travel of the blades. If I offset the blades will that cause it to make a better cut, or is this unbalanced or bent blades causing this? I don't notice it that much in my yard where the grass is less course.

$200.00 for parts & 2 hours + for Mr. Taryl's time for the actual work & research @ $90.00 dollars per Hour for @ least 2 hours if realignment is not required. Not taking into account some fees for disposal of bad parts. This equals don't abuse your mower it is not worth it. $400-$500 repairs are not cheap especially when you can hire it done from a bush hog owner/operator for about the same price.The mower will last longer too. I would love to hear from a Cub Cadet engineer as to why they put a grease fitting on the spindle housing and use double sealed bearings on the spindle. Hard to believe they just wanted to keep the spacer from freezing the the spindle shaft. Oh, and the spindle bearings are a common size 6204-2RS. The 2RS means double sealed. Thanks for the timing lesson.
@glennyj652 жыл бұрын
soon as you hear noise, pop out the bearings and clean them leaving only one side sealed outward. The bearings now require grease but will live on and on.

I had a Cub Cadet. it never made it to 500 hours. Of course it was an MTD with a Kohler engine. What a pile of junk! The mower deck even had some sort of roller bar on the back that started to fall off. That was a real joy because the mower would seem to stop for no reason because one end of that would be under one of the back wheels. I am glad it only started doing that toward the time it was time to junk it. It kept doing that too. It had 4 plastic cylindrical rollers on a metal rod and that was the thing that kept annoyingly falling apart.

Good tip on greasing them bearings think they make them sealed that way so your bearing will go out pre maturelly and you will have to buy new bearings every time you turn around.👍🇺🇸😃
@augustreil6 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea on that mower but not so much on the walk behinds. I have experimented with removing the inner seal and the result was the upper bearing would wear out prematurely due to the fact that once the grease got warm, it would fall out of the upper bearing. My walk behinds never had weep holes. I would pump the housing full and the grease always comes out the top and bottom even with both seals and holds the grease in the upper bearing.
@jhitt796 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, do a little research on greasing bearings and you'll find that sealed bearings should never need additional grease. And over greasing is a common problem that causes premature failure.
@augustreil6 жыл бұрын
jhitt79, No need to do any more research, I have been running and rebuilding all types of walk behind mowers since I was 16 and I'm 53 now. I have tried and tested all types of spindle bearings, from rubber sealed both sides or metal shielded both sides, in MY experience, leaving the seals intact on the inside makes the bearings last much longer, because the grease stays put. Like I said, taking the seals out on the inside seems like an awesome idea, cause I tried it, doesn't work, at least for me. To each their own, just sharing my real world research that's all, thanks.
@jhitt796 жыл бұрын
august I was actually replying to the original comment, not your reply. Sealed bearings are meant to stay sealed and should never need further grease. And most likely will do harm to them from over greasing (the # one cause of premature wear/failure according to most reputable sources, like timken, etc.)
