I am looking for an answer, hope you can help. On Excel, if you want to extend the range of cells that a formula relates to, you double click the cell that contains the formula, it shows you the outline of the cells in the range, then you simply click and drag the outline to extend the cells in the range. I.e. you can add another cell that was missed. Sheets doesn't seem to let you click and drag the outline, instead I can only change the range by typing the cell number into the formula to include it. Surely there is a click and drag functionality for this rather than typing? Can you help? Rose

Is there a way to set it to where it automatically adds up all the values in the cells above the total in the same row; so that way you can add more horizontal rows without having to readjust the code for the total? Thanks!

If you use the insert row function in the middle of the range that you're adding, the range will expand in your formula. Another thing you could do is put the sum function one column to the right and just make the range extend down the entire column such as =SUM(A1:A). There's no stopping point on that range so it adds all of column A.

They're probably not being recognized as numbers. Run the ISNUMBER function on them. See here support.google.com/docs/answer/3093296?hl=en

Select the cell that you want to change, go to Format, then Number. Choose what you want from there. The $ sign is not part of the result, it's just the format applied to it.

Maybe you left the = sign out of your formula. If it's still not working, perhaps your numbers are really text. Check them with the ISNUMBER() function.

Check for spaces in your numbers. That would make the spreadsheet think they are text.

It will work if you just type the formula in =SUM(A1:A3) and change the A1 and A3 with whatever the bounds of your data are.
