As a 35 year old blue belt, I've learnt to accept that while I'm in the best shape of my life, I want to do this for as long as I can. I'm there for the mat time, not the winning/hard rolling.

34 year old blue belt here. Wish I could learn this lesson. I always plan on taking it easy, but as soon as my body gets warm it’s halfway impossible to dial it back. Good on you, maybe I’ll be there one day

I’m 50, so I try not to go 100% more than one session a week. The problem is you need to tell your professor because they expect you to try harder. Also, be willing to tell people no when they ask you to roll. Some guys at the academy only have one speed, so I avoid them. I’ve already had one significant injury that had me away from the mat for almost six months. As they say, check the ego at the door.

Been in it for 10 months now. Started aug 2019. So far i've had my shoulder crushed, neck crushed, baby toe broken. Just because I'm a big guy everyone goes fast and hard with me until I grab them and say "heyyyy slow down". Now I just roll with the purple and brown belt guys. They won't crush me because i'm still learning the "flow".

Just my two cents as someone who's injuries prevented him from doing BJJ until this year 1) Anti-inflammatory diet. 2) Cold therapy 3) BJJ is for play - Save the intensity for extracurricular.

A really simple tip to help you with that is to set a cap on yourself. Only allow yourself to try moderately hard, use 6-7/10 strength and speed, and try to think your way out of things. You will lose really bad at first and you will have to let people beat you with things that you could power or scramble out of, but you'll slowly learn and you'll slowly develop your technique to the point where you can actually beat people with only using 60-70% effort.

I'm a new, older white belt and in my 8 weeks of training I've picked up 4 substantial injuries. All courtesy of other young, spaz white belts. I realised this week after 2 weeks off that I have to make a decision: either quit or be considered rude by being more picky in choosing rolling partners. This has impacted my quality of family time and I am running out of patience with the young guns who have something to prove by popping a mid-life crisis shoulders.

I will be 40 soon. Just started a few weeks ago. Planning on buying a yoga program and maybe going to a class a week. Just started up collagen and mct oil. Both of those plus cleaning up my diet has helped a lot. Added bonus I am able to see a outline of a six pack coming back. As a ex wrestler it was hard for me to tap and to stay off my back. Now I tap a lot and doing better not going to my belly.

Another point, Chewie- you did a video on conditioning for grappling a couple months ago and spoke on slower steady state cardio being your preference given the benefit for your aerobic system and the ability to recover easily. You’re a smart man, the cardiac output method is hands down the king of developing endurance... I’m going to kick it up a notch though. The more specific you can make your conditioning to your sport, the better. So instead of doing this method on cardio equipment, if you can find a training partner, flow rolling at the same intensity and time (70% MHR, 30-90 min, 1-3 times per week) is bar none the best way to develop endurance for grappling. And to tie into this video, the best way to minimize injuries. For absolute beginners, this really kills a lot of birds with one stone, being that they will get a lot more may time, experience and conditioning (which is generally terrible for newbies). It may be hard to find a training partner to commit to something so time consuming, but shadow grappling is a close second. If you can find somewhere to do it where no one can see you (it looks ridiculous lol), then you’re good to go. Sorry to ramble, just wanted to link these two concepts.

Started bjj in 1996. It’s now almost 2023 and still rolling. This is great advice. Try not to use too much strength or speed. Try to use technique on everything. To do this, you have to leave your ego at the door, as they say. If you get tapped, so what. No one cares. Keep training and learn from your mistakes. The “secret” to bjj is consistency over the long term. Can’t be consistent if you’re injured all the time.

I either severely bruised or cracked a rib in my 3rd or 4th class..I’ve learned things since to guard that injured area, such as framing. He even uses BJJ as an example saying if some goes hard on the matt 2 times a week but someone takes it easy 5 times a week for 3 rounds perfecting technique after 50 weeks one has done 100 hours and the other has done 150 hours, those extra hours will pay dividends

I'm 47 now and that's the biggest difference. If I train for 2 hours and finish with 30 minutes of hard rolling, I need to take a day off after. Same with running. I can run for an hour and run a PB, but I need more recovery time. In my 20s that was not the case. It's just a fact of life. I am also obviously slower, heavier and less mobile. However, I am much stronger.
