I think one of the biggest hinderances to properly dealing with violence today, at least from what I've seen here in America over the past 20 years, is not only people being conditioned to acquiesce to violence from childhood, but now it's fear of going to prison for appropriately responding to immediate violence. The law here works in favor of the violent criminal and against those who use appropriate violence to defend themselves. The law is conditioning people to be afraid to fight back. When I was a kid, if you gave a bully a bloody nose, everyone applauded. Today, the bully is seen as the victim, and the kid who fought back gets suspended. Maybe even charged with assault and battery. Defend yourself or your family and you're the bad guy. This emboldens violent people, as they have nothing to lose, while good people have everything to lose by fighting back. Then everyone wonders why violent crime increases. Very sad. 😪

I absolutely see what you are saying. But in the heat of the moment this kind of thinking will enhance the already passive conditioning. As long as you fight back when it's reasonable and necessary you have a good chance to get away with it. That said, I take the consequences rather then be dead or injured. We need predatory thinking instead of thinking about legal issues when it's time to protect yourself. You are right, it's a challenge when the law protects the criminal. Maybe it's time to think more like a criminal for that reason...

I come from a martial art background since I was a kid, thinking that I will be able to "protect myself in the streets". Oh boy, I was wrong! After watching your videos, all it took was a SIMPLE mindset and a SIMPLE techniques under real fight-stress! I used to watch martial arts videos often but now I'm surprised to find myself avoiding anything "martial art- related" because I know it doesn't work in real fight-stress with adrenaline and other factors... Thank you Michiel for these wonderful videos...

Good point. For me, as someone who needs this skill for his job (just like you), the difficult part isnt to be aggressive, but to switch that aggression on in a very short time (from one second to another), even if you are tired etc etc

Most street predators are inherently aggressive. Your concept is 100 % correct. The average person avoids aggression, completely to our detriment in a self defense senario ! Got to learn to switch it ON !!

Great presentation as always! Kiai 気合 - on steroids. A must have! Learning to develop the switch, then refine how to switch it on instantly with such overwhelming sudden multiple strikes aggression to chosen targets is key, (Surprise Aggression Speed), but then learning to switch it off equally as quick is also important and required in the eyes of the law when the proverbial happens (with people and cameras around). You absolutely may preemptive strike and that law should be learned. The switch is key and the demon is released.

I completely agree with you that learning techniques alone without conditioning our brain might lead to failure in the real world of violence. However, there is such a thing as the "fight or flight" syndrome which we all feel when threatened. When we are being attacked, the thug is already ahead of us regarding his level of violence. He is ready to hurt/kill us no matter what without worrying about the consequences. For us, however, we are at the peaceful and "good citizen" mindset when the attack occurs. and it will/might take a bit of time to turn on our level of aggressiveness to match the thug. My question to you is, is there a mental trick you use to trigger this violence urge in us to match the thug's? you said in your video that training as realistically as possible would help us get to that level, but when we're training, we all know that it isn't real; we are not going to get badly hurt or die from this encounter. Therefore, we are still in a comfortable environment where the "fight of flight" syndrome doesn't kick in. I want to be able to turn on the "animal' switch in me on an instant when being attacked, and not feel a sudden uncontrollable sensation of fear which could paralize me. So again, is there any mental training you would suggest to address this issue? sorry for the length of this post but I wanted to try to make my point as clear as possible. Thank you for what you do.

Trust me..this is possible to simulate in training. Until the point your brain doesn’t know it’s a drill. That’s what we do. It’s not fight or flight by the way. It’s freeze first. Then you fight or flight depending on training, DNA, mindset and ability and/or injury. You need to control your adrenaline and fight stress by understanding them at first..and knowing how to. That’s where all our training comes into place.

Great video. Mindset, aggression and visualization are criminally underused in self defense even though they are three key ingredients in the recipe that will allow you to use whatever techniques you've learned in a real situation. If you only practise techniques in a sanitized environment among friends, your brain will not recognize a violent encounter as the type of event where it needs to use these techniques. A question I'm interested in as a fellow self defense instructor is How do you teach your students to STOP at the right time, ie. before they use disproportionate violence and end up in legal trouble? I find it easy to train that animal rage on pads, where people will sometimes literally rip them to shreds with long series of strikes as they growl and foam at the mouth, but I find it much harder to train them to stop at the right time. And unfortunately in certain jurisdictions, even one strike too many is enough to get you in trouble. So, do you for example have aggressors fake surrender or being knocked out? What cues ,if any, do you have in place?
@schoolofselfprotection
@schoolofselfprotection 28 күн бұрын
Operant condition in training. Condition them like dogs. Man down mean stop. It’s a process but very important indeed. Our pad-feed is designed like this too. The brain needs to understand when to stop when it’s in its limbic system.

Thank You. In my training (Combatives,FMA) I use the Switch a lot, sometimes on tires. Problem: When Sparing I can't go 100%. People find it challenging (becouse of my aggression not skill) to spar with me as it is. Plus im getting old and injury recovery time is getting long. My approach is: if there is no resistance , you will never know what really works for you. Your thoughts? P.S. I have incorporated some of your techniques into my personal training. Thanks.
@schoolofselfprotection
@schoolofselfprotection 22 күн бұрын
You need to test everything with resistance. That’s were everything I teach comes from. Sparring is always good but is not simulating real street violence. You need good and hard scenario training with resistance and good role play for that. It’s key for Self-Protection training. That’s why we need to keep it simple and gross motor.
