i don't know if this is deliberate, but after i commented about the music being a little loud in relation to speech, I've noticed it being so much better, so thank you so much if this is, it really improves it for me :) have you got any suggestions about how to train like this WITHOUT a garmin (for a tight budget) and how best to replicate the effects of a power meter?
@Toastybear1
@Toastybear1 9 жыл бұрын
all too well aware of that, given the most depressing this in my life at the moment is that there are no more old gcn videos to watch, but theres no reason they can't tell you how to train, using a garmin, without a garmin obviously it won't be as good, but some of us are students and can't afford £150 bike computer!!

marcus allison Hi Marcus, we have absolutely loads of training videos on the channel, and most do not rely on any kind of cycling hardware. However, we are also trying to cater for the many people who do have power meters and Garmins, so hence videos like this.
@Toastybear1
@Toastybear1 9 жыл бұрын
of course, I'm absolutely not saying there shouldn't be these videos! it would just be good to have a video called, how to train (and race) on a budget or something like that, or how to train and race without data as I've said, I'm a student, and i can't afford, well, anything except my bike, so racing becomes pretty difficult because everyone has £1000 bikes and £500 power meters!!. :)

Good video, although most of us can only dream of owning a power meter! I have the poor man's Garmin (the Edge 500) and one thing you didn't mention was the "Virtual training partner". I set mine up when I know I have ridden a route particularly well, then next time I can ride against myself. It's very easy to do, but I suspect some owners have not found it yet. How about a video on that. If a friend shares their ride data then you can ride against them, too!

Elevation gain, grade, heart rate zones, auto-lap are most useful features for using the device without being connected to powermeter. And of course navigation features, especially if you prefer to find new routes.

We see you ride in many great locations with your Garmins, so are all of your routes available for us to see and perhaps download, or do you have links to connect with you on Garmin Connect? Not wanting to seem too much like a stalker, but trying to find the roads in East Wales using fleeting glimpses of "Tintern" does not always work.

Well if use the recalcution features which gets you back on track if lost. Garmin have removed this since the 3.6 update and the 3.62beta. They tell me this is because it has bugs and doesn't always reroute correctly. So beware if you get lost as manual intervention is required until this is resolved. Thanks garmin for the un needed hassle

Hi Guys I have just set up strava segments on my garmin for my favourite climbs, it pop up for the first time at the weekend giving me my PB to beat, but my power reading disappeared with it. So my question is should I just ride to time or would I be better off knowing my power out put (new to having a power meter) #torqueback

for light rust, just paint on a couple layers of rustoleum, then you can touch it up with paint if you want. if the rust is bad, especially if it's flaking, sand it smooth first, then you can apply rustoleum.

If I want to use my garmin to follow structured power workouts on the road, what would be the best way to setup the training screens? There is one screen specifically regarding workouts, but it does not use 3s power average, and it bounces a lot inside and outside the power zones. Also there is no cadence on that screen. What is the best way to set up your garmin to do this? Any best practice? Warm Up: 1 hr @ 208 W (Zone 2, 208-282 W) Repeat 8 times Work: 1 min @ 480 W (Zone 6, 450-2000 W) Recovery: 1 min @ 176 W (Zone 1, 0-207 W) Work: 15 min @ 256 W (Zone 2, 208-282 W) Repeat 4 times Work: 10 min @ 320 W (Zone 3, 283-337 W) Recovery: 10 min @ 176 W (Zone 1, 0-207 W) Work: 45 min @ 288 W (Zone 3, 283-337 W) Cool Down: 15 min @ 192 W (Zone 1, 0-207 W)

Biggest flaw about live segments is that you can't overlay power and cadence. After the segment starts you have to manually switch to a different screen and then you can't really see where you're at time wise anyway.

I noticed this too as well. I think this is supposed to be 150/200, keeping the IF as 0.75, i.e. 75% or 0.75 of your FTP. Therefore the FTP would be 1.333 of your NP. ...if that makes sense!

I've never been able to finish a route I've made. At some point it always thinks I'm off course, wants me to turn around, or just drops the entire route. Sometimes even on segments. Lame, hopefully there will be a patch someday to make the navigation work...

Dr. McAwesome Did you create your route on Strava? 'Cus the route creator on Strava tends to mess up now and then. I always zoom in fairly close to the map and double check to see if the line is straight or it hopped back, tuck a turn and then got back on course again. Really messes up your ride, pace etc when you're out riding with your Garmin.

I can't afford a power meter either, but I'm intelligent enough to look for other points. For instance, speed is *not* on the GCN list. I belittle others for showing average speed (counter-productive to training), but I show speed. Oops. GCN rightly points out it's noise too. Effort level (Power or HR) is more relevant, and lap time can be helpful (never thought of that). A new perspective. Thanks.

The comment on lap timing is not quite clear to me. Do you guys mean to set up an interval training in your garmin device and use that? I have an edge 800 so some of the features you discuss are not suitable for me.

Something you need to bring up on the GCN show. I know this video was published in July 2015, but it refers to Garmin's live segments. What is going on with their segments. The segments feature has been down for months and Garmin are not making any public statements about when it will be reinstated, yet they advertise it as a feature on their products. Not on Strava and have no intention of signing up to Strava and paying for the premium account. You guys are very supportive of Garmin, any chance you can raise the profile of the Segments issue to push them to sort it out. John E
