My thoughts exactly, he was so good in the series! He supported Hiccup in becoming chief, and he really worked hard to be worthy of bring Hiccups side man. I forgot that the movies really just reduce him to some mouth-breathing jock stereotype.

that is the one con I have with this is that after all the stuff he and Hiccup in particular go through with each other and how their "friendship" develops in the show, I really don't feel like Snotlout would be hitting on Hiccup's mom. He might joke about it once or twice, but not actually try to get with her.

The ending for this movie made me feel... unsatisfied. I absolutely love the HTTYD franchise, it owns my heart, but I felt like Toothless felt a lot more.... animalistic in this movie. I get he’s an ACTUAL animal, but in the previous movies he had such humanoid emotions, and his loyalty to hiccup was far more complex than let’s say a dog loving its owner. The fact that toothless semi-willingly left hiccup to be safe and to be with the lightfury kind of bothered me. I wish there was more of a buildup of toothless leaving him. That he was getting torn up inside for a duration of the movie choosing hiccup or the lightfury. It would be okay if he left if that would’ve happened. Because of that, I didn’t feel as much of a bond in this film between hiccup and toothless as I did in the previous films, and that stuck out to me the entire time

I agree, I feel like Toothless was a bit selfish but he kinda did find a dragon that was closest to his own species. But then again, bros before hoes Dreamworks! MORE PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS LINE. *MORE PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS LINE.* For those of you who don't, it is the first and last line of the book series (and yes, they are every bit as different to the movies as Celly keeps saying). It has more of an impact every time it is said, and since you are reading the books seeing Hiccup as an old man, writing his memoirs so the dragons may not be forgotten, when it is repeated one final time as the last line of the last book, it is an emotional sucker-punch to almost rival COCO. And if you haven't read the books, you should definitely do that. They are universes away from the movies, you won't have spoiled anything for yourself, don't worry. I highly recommend the books. They are incredible.

that is the absolute best scene in the entire franchise solely because of Grimmel's reaction to it all. Him trying to keep working but not being able to concentrate is one of the best gags, probably because it's so relatable. I didn’t have too much of a problem with the riders in this film because I’m so used to them being stupid, and they kinda grew on me after being with them for almost a decade. I don't really think it's that simple. Both sides are going to be in continuous danger from hunters coming after the dragons. They separate to protect each other because as long as they're together, people are going to keep going after the dragons and hunting and killing them and driving them to extinction, and they're also going to be attacking Berk and its people because of their relationship with the dragons. So for both to survive and thrive, they have to split.

@@holad-jlsegovia-423 You have many points and I agree with all of them. Another point about why Snotlout may have backslid, was in the series, they were far from Berk, so Snotlout didn't constantly have Spitelout pushing him to be better than Hiccup and show his worthiness to be chief. Being back on Berk, that would have started back up again, especially with Stoick having died in the previous movie. With the twins, yes I'm annoyed that Tuffnut seems to have chugged a good number of stupid pills, because yes, she's much smarter than she was in the movie. Unless we get a series showing why this changed, I'm calling lazy writing for that one.
@holad-jlsegovia-423
@holad-jlsegovia-423 5 жыл бұрын
@@R.M.MacFru well, it's not lazy writting at all. The series and movies are almost two different things, they are developed by different people and departments. It's not the fault of Dean DeBlois and the other writters, the third's movie creation probably started around the second season of Race To The Edge or even before, so they were not aware about the things that happened in the series and only focused on giving an ending to the movies. It's also important to say that during that time Comcast bought DreamWorks and the creation of HTTYD 3 was weird, as Dean DeBlois said in interview. It was the series that was trying to be tied with the movies, the movies didn't really have interest in that

How did Fishlegs go from Heather to Ruffnut? Man it is so frustrating that they totally ignore the awesome characters in the series like Dagur and Mala and Heather and so on and so forth and just give us the five “main” characters (out of which only Hiccup and Astrid seem to be relevant). Otherwise the movie was a masterpiece, especially animation wise, I loved the hidden world, it was such a beautiful location, it is such a pity that we will most likely never see more of it. I feel like the series did a little to mature Snotlout towards its end, but it hardly made up for how much airtime was wasted on him and the Twins just being unfunny filler. It was bad enough most of the time, but they not only got entire episodes devoted to them, but they would also interrupt serious or emotional scenes of better characters. I remember one episode where Astrid think Stormfly was poisoned and dying, and as she’s kneeling and crying over her Dragon, we have to put up with 1 whole minute of Ruffnut saying inane bull crap. Because heaven forbid we focus on something sad for a few minutes, the children might get bored.

To be honest, I loved the twins and Snotlout. They and the dragons carried the show. I like Astrid and Hiccup, but six seasons of them would get old fast. Just like the twins by themselves would get ridiculous fast. I liked the way all of the characters interacted and played off each other. Like the way Hiccup always was kind of considering what the twins were saying to filter out the useful parts. He knew that their madness did follow some weird logic and that their strange world view made room for ideas and solutions he just wouldn't consider. Especially when it came to opponents who were just better strategists, like Viggo.

Grimmel was a failure of a villain. He was hyped up with killer dragons, but the movie never lets him kill anyone major. He could have killed off Snotlout to match with the books and since the character had nothing going for him in the movie or any of the Dragon riders non-Toothless dragons. I think what took away from the villains was the main separation the movie was building up to.

And he didn't even have to kill of a side character but I would've loved it if he at least seriously injured one of the dragons or side characters and they get a badass scar from it. Imagine this: Snotlaut disagrees with Hiccup, questioning his role as chief, he thinks they should just attack Grimmel but Hiccup wants to flee. Hiccup says something like:"We're not gonna fight this guy for now and that's final!" Snotlaut is angry and so he and Hookfang recklessly fly off on their own to take down Grimmel by themselves. At first they manage to get past the guards and everything goes better than the viewers expected but then he slips up and blows his element of surprise. Of course he stands no chance against Grimmel but we get a relatively short fighting scene in which he fights fiercely before he gets overpowered. Snotlaut realizes that he can't win this fight and so he sacrifices himself so that Hookfang can flee. We don't get to see what Grimmel ultimately does to him as the camera pans to Hookfang that is about to fly away, but mid flight he stops because he can hear Snotlaut yelping out in pain and we see the look on Hookfangs face as he watches it. He changes his mind about fleeing because he doesn't want to leave Snotlaut to die, he lights himself on fire, bursts into the fight, barely dodges an axe that leaves a not too deep cut on his neck and manages to grab Snotlaut, who is clearly injured and bleeding from his face, and flies away with him. The movie continues as usual until Hookfang lands at New Berk, the friend group is deeply shaken up by how Snotlaut is hurt but while they are busy with him and Hookfang, Grimmel captures Toothless and the light fury. Snotlaut, who now has a pretty big scar on his cheek and one on his arm, is told to stay at New Berk as he hasn't fully recovered yet, the rest of the gang goes to free their dragons (all except for Hookfang as he was too traumatized and tired follow Toothless's command to go back to Grimmel) We see that Snotlaut wants to help but is told no and we see how he is upset and worried that he can't help his friends. The fight scene continues as usual until one character from the friend group would totally get hit by a hammer but Snotlaut jumps in front of them and block the hit with a shield or his own weapon. Now Snotlaut joins the fight and that's all we see from him for now as the camera pans to the fight between Hiccup and Grimmel. (Alternatively Snotlaut could get killed in the final fight, but that would be a little too dark for a kids movie) This way we could see how ruthless Grimmel is and how he doesn't shy away from hurting anyone who gets in his way. Snotlaut would get a role that is less for stupid comic relief and he actually gets some character development. We also get to see how his recklessness has consequences and that the characters can definitely get hurt. Of course this wouldn't necessarily be enough to make Grimmel a good villain but it would be a start.

i might be biased (since i read most of the books, and watched the netflix show from the second it came out) but i think that Race To The Edge is better than its movie counterparts. the characters get more attention (snotlout and the twins have a personality, _finally_ ) and, to put it simply, there’s just so much more attention to detail and the story itself. this makes sense, since movies tend to be much shorter that shows, but i still really appreciate how the creators took the time to give us information on characters we don’t see as much of, such as the twins, snotlout, and fishlegs. also, worldbuilding! i just love this show. this comment might not make any since, my apologies, but i just- RTTE is better compared to the movies, at least for me. the characters having developed personalities, the plot, and the worldbuilding just makes it better than all three movies in my eyes.

I personally liked the villans, Vigo is a masterpiece, Ryker is too for his ending, Daggers redemption makes sense and Krogan has such a good backstory underneath his powerful facade to exert fear. The only one I disliked was Joyan (idk if I'm spelling the names right but whatever) his betrayal was cool and all and how it effected Berk but as soon as he became evil he outlook Krogans rank? I think that the movie should've had SOME reference to Vigo, as he is said to have been a powerful player in the Archipelago and yknow, he uh... failed which could add to some concerns of the dragon trappers.

@@CamsEyeView Boy, you can say *THAT* again! And it honestly does gets irritating pretty fast every time. 😒 I’m been trying to tell the so-called community that just because DreamWorks got purchased by Universal *DOESN’T* mean that Illumination is the new owner as well. I mean, if one really wants to go off by that kind of logic, it would also be like say that both Blue Sky and Nickelodeon used to own DreamWorks in the past due to their respective Fox and Paramount connection. Complete nonsense! If the last animated studios (not entirely sure about Nick though) managed to stay out of DreamWorks’ way for so long (i.e. little to no involvement at all), I’m pretty sure Illumination will be the same way for DW while under the same new distributor. DW has always been a versatile animation studio, as opposed to an in-house one, that's also now reunited with its SKG division (of live action films) as well. At this point, I feel that the worst of the cartoon community could easily rival that of Star Wars fans in terms of poor behavior.

I don't know about you guys but I used to hate Ruff and Tuff, now I have a certain amount of respect towards them because of the great character development the series did and the way it touched on their sibling relationship so much more. But I still hate the way this movie portrayed them, especially Ruff! Like - in the series she was still an idiot but at least she had some backbone, at least she could get herself out to crazy situations and you could really see how she is the more practical of the twins and how without her tuff and the rest of the dragon riders really couldn't function. In the movies (especially the last two) she is just a stupid idiot, completely oblivios to the danger and everything going on, only focused on being "sexy" etc. Also, I liked how the series made us see how they all work as a friend group. Playful banter, sarcastic comments but ultimately always having each other's backs and that is why the series will be always better than the last two movies for me.

gosh, I love how chaotic they are, especially Tuff and that's mostly due to the shows. There are so many times in the shows when he's going off on some random tangent and the camera cuts away from him, but very faintly in the background, he says one more thing that's just as random. Makes watching with subtitles so much fun. It actually happens in the third movie. When they realize they left Ruff behind, he says "now I feel like how Ruffnut is every day...dumb." The camera cuts to a wide shot, but very faintly, if you listen, you can hear him say "I try not to look at her. It gives me acid reflux"

Sad about the missed potential with the other riders. I thought they were all very characterized in the series. The twins were actually some of my favorite characters, and I admire what they had done with Snotlout's character, managing to take what should be someone that's just very one-dimensional and a total jerk and making him be actually likeable more often than not, or at the very least, you could understand him. Feels like ignoring character development from the series to do this to them. Also disappointed that...a certain....narrative doorway that had been opened for Snotlout in the animated series wasn't taken, and they made him flirt with freakin Hiccup's mom instead.

Curiously, I found Hiccup's friends' antics amusing (most of the time) and I think the humor was better handled in this movie than the second one. My main issue with this movie is the villain. I thought Drago was an ok villain, but he's great in comparison to Grimmel. At least he has a reason to be bitter towards dragons - they killed his family and took his arm. Grimmel is just... kinda evil? And there? And really stereotypical? Anyway. I couldn't help but interpret the "letting dragons go" thing as a metaphor for growing up and leaving your childhood behind, so that made me tear up. The ending was just beautiful.

also, about snotlout and the twins. Race To The Edge does a perfectly good job of showing how Hiccup's relationships with them change, evolve and ACTUALLY improve. By the end of the series, Snotlout DOES have respect for Hiccup, and isn't just there for comedic relief (and when he is, its always funny). The movie decided to throw that out of the window. Also i found it absurd that 'the dragons HAD to leave'. Hiccup and Toothless literally spend hours on screen fighting against the status quo, and all of that is thrown away because 'humans cannot be trusted'. It was just a bad way to end things, and was just so inconsistent with the messaging of the prior films. Focusing on Hiccup becoming overworked due the dragons they continuously have to save, and maybe looking at Toothless wanting _some_ freedom. But the random need to just separate them to draw the series to a 'nice' end pissed me off so much.

I think the think I liked least about httyd 3 was that the whole point of the movies and the shows was about fighting back against people that want to keep the world the way that it they like it for there own personal gain. Every villain, both movies and shows, wanted things to stay the same, with dragons being hunted as prey instead of equal partners, because it benefitted them in some way. But in the third movie they're just like "well, there's bad people, so we have to send the dragons away until they get better without anyone having a reason to make the world better for the dragons or humanity". When you consider what the the over-arching theme has been, the ending becomes less satisfying and doesn't make sense, character wise or logic wise. The ending message given by Hiccup should have been something along the lines of "There's always going to be bad people in the world, but we have to fight for the things and people we love or we end up losing what we had" Sorry for the rant, I just wanted to voice my thoughts. See, the books and the movies had the same message. It's not "dragons are good" or "friendship and love wins" or some nonsense. In the show, in the movies, in the books, ONE thing is clear, and that is the simple fact that dragons always have been and always will be superior to humans in every way possible. Dragons are PEOPLE, they are not slaves, they are not animals any more than humans are, and humans are driven by their greed and savagery. In the books and the movies, the message is a plea for humankind to better themselves. We are not worthy yet of the beauty and majesty and spectacular minds of the dragons. The third movie ends with Hiccup speaking the first lines of the first book (there are twelve books), and really, all of Hiccup's "This is Berk" speeches are him telling the story, sharing the truth of the dragons. Hiccup (and his predecessors, Hiccup the First and Hiccup the second) and Valka were one of the very few humans who *understood* that dragons are better, that dragons are more beautiful and strong and wise than any human, and due to their lack of greed and bias, they were worthy of knowing the dragons, of loving them as equals. They were some of the few truly evolved humans. The point is, humans are greedy, selfish, and overly violent. "We been knew!" I hear you saying, but these stories are an attempt to inspire humans to *change their ways*, or to try, at least. Hiccup says it in the books and the movies, that the dragons are hiding. The dragons are hiding deep in the depths, waiting for humans to evolve into kinder beings. But it hasn't happened yet. Hiccup is trying to tell us something. Maybe there are dragons, somewhere in the bottom of the ocean, deep in Sleepcomas, a state in which a dragon can remain indefinitely. Humans have only explored 2% of it, after all. Maybe there aren't. Regardless of whether they are there or not, if they are, the question we are being asked is this: If they're down there, don't you want to be worthy of them? Don't you want to meet them, and know them, and love them? Don't you want humans to be kinder and less greedy? Grimmel, Viggo Grimborn, Drago Bludvist, Alvin the Treacherous (the one that was related to Hiccup, though very distantly). They all have something in common. They *knew* that dragons were more evolved, and it frightened them. They let their fear and their hate consume them until they blinded themselves, convincing themselves that dragons were nothing more than dumb beasts, to be enslaved and treated like animals. Despite the fact that dragons had language, had customs, had laws and gods of their own, these human monsters imagined them as thoughtless. The dragons *know* that humans are less evolved. Some are prideful on the subject, calling humans "mud crawlers" and "the flightless." Others fear the barbaric machines that humans create for the sole purpose of causing pain and death and destruction. Few dragons deign to few humans as equals, because they don't think that humans are capable of love. Attachment, yes, but not love. The dragons that do see humans as equal are rare. Toothless, Cloudjumper, Furious, Woden'sfang, they could see which humans could love. I do apologize for such a long comment but I just returned from seeing the last movie in theaters for my birthday and I have a lot of feelings about it, goodbye

Great film, the scene with Hiccup falling was amazing. The call backs to the other films where good, but I agree, I wish they had done more with the side characters such as the other riders, Valka, and Eret. Also I know a lot of people like it, but I have mixed feelings on the ending. See, I agree that is well written and emotional, but it also felt out of place, like it was only that because that’s the ending of the book. Because to me it seemed like the series, especially with the tv show, as building to dragon and humans working together in peace, even with Grimmel and the other villains implying that such an ideaology was spreading, and that peace while not easy, was possible. Except then nope! The dragons have to leave now, possibly forever! I’m all for them, especially toothless, having their freedom to come and go as they please, but it felt more like toothless just abandoned his friend now the the had a love interest. The reunion was cute, but I honestly kept expecting toothless to either refuse to leave or return during the wedding, which to me, seemed more in character and made more sense for the themes of the movies! It’s especially jarring to me because we know the hidden world isn’t that far from New Berk if they can fly there in less than a day and take a rather dinky boat out to it. And yet toothless didn’t visit once in ten years? But yeah that’s my two cents, I liked the movie a lot and the writing is good, but the ending has me conflicted bc it is Well Written but it feels like it’s in the wrong movie!

I will say, Hiccup falling genuinely scared me because I went into this thinking "this is the end, the conclusion to everything. That means everyone's plot armor is completely gone. Anything could happen to anyone". And I didn't have that thought because I thought something might happen to someone. I just realized that plot armor means nothing in final installments. And then of course, by chance, that line of thinking was almost proven true.

The only thing I didn't like about this movie was the ending. the main goal of the group is "Lets stop dragons from being hunted to extinction" "Hey we found this hidden world place so lest shove all of our dragons there and let all the other dragons go extinct" just thinking that it's a terrible idea, dragons probably naturally migrated out of there for biodiversity which gives us all the different types we see throughout the films/shows, so forcing them back in might cause more problems not less. then there are surely types that cant enter there for either being way too specialized for their environment or needing very specific foods.
@thirdcoinedge
@thirdcoinedge 9 ай бұрын
In the movie's defense, dragons never completely seemed like an aspect of the natural world. Nature did not evolve around the existence of dragons, dragons were merely introduced to it, so their return to the Hidden World isn't all that unhealthy, environmentally speaking, though you do raise a point that not every type of dragon may be successfully reintroduced to the Hidden World (my headcanon is that aquatic dragons were just mistaken for whales for the next several centuries). However, the sheer diversity of dragon species, many of whom we've seen before in in both the movies and the series, present in the Hidden World implies that it wouldn't be as much of a problem as it seems at first glance (it's already got varied environments and is capable of supporting a great density of individual dragons). It's not presented as a wholly happy ending, either - the dragons leaving is sad, it's not meant to be seen as a victory, but rather a necessary sacrifice for the good of their future survival. They probably did naturally migrate out into the world, but now they must return to it for the time being, until humans as a whole demonstrate that they are capable of respecting and forging bonds with dragons as equals, like with Hiccup. After all, who do you think Hiccup has been narrating to this whole trilogy? It's a return to the more thematic and personal vibes of the first film, rather than the groundedness of the second, with emphasis being placed on dragons as a metaphor than as strict lore.

Honestly I think one of the issues with the other dragon riders was that for a movie, there were too many to keep track of and give them their own things. Books and other films typically stick with a main three because those characters are easy to keep track off and build personalities and arcs with. Like Spider-Verse. While they had more than three Spider-people, the main focus was Miles, Gwen and Peter. And they each had their own moments beautifully (as did the other three of course). Having Hiccup and Toothless to focus on as well as giving Astrid some of her own things to make her important already filled the Main Three role. Now of course they could’ve had other dragon riders and made them work, but they wanted the other three to be too important and have nothing done with them. Maybe just stick with two characters who have personalities like Fishlegs and a mix of the twins and Snotlout. Or just don’t make them seem so important or better yet, not at all. This is advise for your own works. If you give a character a line, or a name, they have to be important. Unless it’s just for a side gag that appears for a few seconds and is never brought up again. Make the name and line worth it. Don’t waste it. There’s my tea 🍵

I honestly don't take the title as an insult to the movie because the Netflix show is absolute fire. And I am very proud to be as much an informational nerd of this franchise as I am Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. I have always loved how seamless the connection between the shows and movies is in terms of how they feel. The characters, the way they interact with each other, the humor, the story, the action, it all feels exactly the same and that just adds to the feeling that this is all one interconnected story, especially a coming-of-age story for Hiccup as even the shows put him in a beginner leadership role, then upping it a bit by putting him in a war with dragon hunters. And I absolutely love the Hiccup/Viggo rivalry. It is done so well, and I absolutely love the way Viggo is able to get under Hiccup's skin, in no small part due to the actors. I also find it funny how the two actors had already worked on a project together as protagonist and villain in The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda are STUNNING trilogies. Absolutely stunning. They're one of the few trilogies out there where ALL the films are great. Because Iron Man 1 and 3 are really great, but we don't talk about the second. For Dark Knight, one and two are really great, but the third has a lot of plot issues. And Toy Story was really great, but now it's not a trilogy. I think Captain America might also be up there where all the films in the trilogy are great as well. Along with the OG Star Wars. But these films are special because they had a lot going against them being animated, from a company that was a direct rival to Disney, and they had to show people that animation can be for everyone, where most see animations as just for kids. But HTTYD and KFP really pulled it off in a lovely way. They're honestly some of my favorite trilogies out there.

The prequels were actually great if you think about it, as they pioneered the way for CGI there fight scenes were amazing and they had Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan they fixed many of the plot holes and before you say the the politics were boring let me tell you why they weren’t bad. They showed the breakdown of a fully functioning government with many different ideologies breaking down into the empire before it finally collapses after hundreds of carefully made moves by Darth Sidious. I will admit though that the bad scripts and just some boring stuff held it back a lot.

FINALLY!!! A reviewer that has seen the TV series and acknowledges its existence in reviewing the final film which acts as the final chapter to this entire world that both the movies and series have built. Also I’m glad I’m not alone in acknowledging just how much better the series are than the films in certain aspects. Vigo and Dagger are miles above the villains from the movies, but that, like with all things, can be attributed to the fact that they just had more time. Like you I was slightly disappointed that they didn’t have more references to the series, and in fact the ending to the final movie kind of leaves more questions than answers when you take into account just how large the world is that they built in the series. *Spoiler Alert:* How could all the dragons be gone?!? There were islands full of them!!! But I digress. The franchise had to have an ending and this was a good one. I’m so glad we got a good one. As far as the future goes, I eagerly await to see what the director, Dean DeBlois, has next in store. After basically creating both “Lilo and Stitch” and “How to Train Your Dragon”, both stellar childhood icons, I hope that he’s not retiring anytime soon.

Haha. The funny thing is: If toothless also called back dragons from the other islands. 1st: no Razorwhips or other types dragons from the series were seen in the flock 2nd: if they did sprinkle the dragons from the series in, that basically means they slaughtered and burnt the defenders of the wing alive because of the dragons needing to go away for some reason. If they left just the eruptadon on the island, that would mean that the monolog at the end makes no sense since there would still be a dragon on another island. It just feels like the series and the movies trying to be connected is one big mistake xD So either the end monolog makes no sense, or Hiccup and Toothless have killed hundreds of dragon lovers.

The series has no bearing on the films and was made by different people. That's why it wasn't acknowledged and nobody ever had any intention of acknowledging it at any point in D3's production. Disagree about the series being better. The only great things about the show are its sense of humour and the (very) few tender moments between characters. Generally, however, it's unfocused, butchers characters, introduces ideas completely at odds with the world, has a meaningless, formless story, and by gods the dragons aren't even characters. The film villains are thematic and encapsulate an idea, in contrast to what you might be looking for; this has nothing to do with "time", it's called vision and economical storytelling. The show had all the time in the world to craft a competent story, but instead messed around with filler and misunderstood what made the films special.

@@R.M.MacFruWell, the second movie did have Hiccup describe Berk as "the best-kept secret [...]", implying that they lived fairly isolated from anyone else in having consistent interactions with dragons (the first movies also implies that from the opening narration with "where others have mosquitos or rats, we have dragons"), so them interacting with other villages in the series and teaching them about human-dragon connections does contradict the movies somewhat, where it's just implied that Hiccup has only been exploring the vast uninhabited archipelagos of the surrounding ocean and the dragons within, which is why Drago and his army appearing as humans that also interact with dragons, but in a more exploitative manner, is so shocking. There's a wider world out there, with others that are willing to weaponize dragons for their own ends, which they take action against by the beginning of the third movie in raiding warlord convoys, compared to in the series, where that's just an every-episode occurrence.

These films are great, I love them to bits and I grew up with them, but The Hidden World is probably the most flawed film so far. I feel like there were a few scenes that could have been handled better or completely scrapped. (An example is the Ruffnut and Grimmel scene. I feel like it went on for too long and instead of being funny, it started to become annoying to the audience.) A big issue I have is with the newer dragon models, specifically with Toothless. In the first movie, he was very lizard-like, which I liked a lot because it fits him more for a dragon, but in the second movie they changed it a bit, and I didn't mind it but in the third film they completely changed him from the first model. It probably doesn't seem like a big deal to most people since he becomes "cuter", but he's a dragon and I think he should look more like a reptile. Another problem is with Grimmel. I think he could have played a bigger part other than "I killed all the night furies, i'm going to kill yours now" and then gets defeated in like, 2 days when Viggo took months to defeat in Race to the Edge. I don't fully consider the series to be canon, but I do think it had better villains than The Hidden World. I wish they could have done better with the advertising of the third movie because I feel like they advertised it too much which caused a lot of the movie to be predictable because they showed too much in the trailers. I do really agree that all three of the movies are very beautiful though with amazing animation. The detail they put into the scenery is really incredible and the music was heartbreaking and I still haven't brought myself to listen to the soundtrack since I watched the movie. I still think it was a great movie though, definitely one to remember. It's the end of an amazing series that means so much to me and many other fans.

He, like Hiccup, found a Night Fury as a child, but unlike Hiccup, killed it. I think Grimmel represents what Hiccup could have become had he killed Toothless in the first movie. All in all, I get your point, but I personally really enjoyed Grimmel's contrast to Hiccup. :)

@@lindenlynx You are right that Grimmel is a foil character of Hiccup. But feel that was lacking too because he uses dragons and when he gets called out on it his answer is lacking it feels like a child saying no you. I think for me again Vigo feels a lot more a foil character of Hiccup. Grimmels feels like he was used just set it all in motion. In my opinion, not much would have been lost without him. It still could have been about them splitting up because Hiccup needs to focus more on leading his tribe and he is growing up and need to go to meetings and talk to other chiefs and it is getting harder and harder to spend with Toothless and then Toothless meets the Lighfury and go from there. In the end, Grimmle feels lacking and a bit of a hypocrite maybe it would have been better for me if we saw more similarities between them then we did.

@@eeliejun I agree, especially on your point about him using dragons. That felt quite odd to me. I think they kind of had to have him use dragons so that the Berkians and Hiccup wouldn't completely overpower him, and I don't think that worked in their favor.

The second movie's villain was a ton more threatening, monstrous, and dangerous, and I seem to recall that movie being the darkest yet, SO I think they tried to dial down the peril of The Hidden World this time by giving this villain a more comedic nature.

@@lindenlynx I like the idea about him using poison from dragons. But keeping them as pets was a bit of a strange thing to do if you love the hunt so much.

They couldve and SHOULDVE done something with Drako or his sucessor, man had a lot of infulence and gets like 1 line in the 3rd movie, like instead of the 70 yr old Grimmer who looks like a friendly old dude. Grimmer was destined to not fill Dragos shoes. Also side note I think the fact that Vigo in the end had a "Sort of" enemy of the enemy is my friend thing twice and played it so well 2 times with the first never giving up on the dragon eye and the second literally taking himself out to exact revenge was so well executed and in my opinion better than Grimmer, even with Rtte having the budget and stuff that it did (not that im hating on Rtte, its my 3rd favorite thing in the httyd franchise.)

9:20- I wouldn't be too concerned with Dreamworks' future as it was revealed somewhere last year that they hired Guillermo Del Toro to direct a good number of upcoming films. Can't quite remember when his first Dreamworks film is said to be released, but it's definitely promising that they have him on board.

Honestly, if Grimmel and Drago swapped, HTTYD3 would’ve been way better. Drago was stronger and more manipulative. He was fucking horrifying and HTTYD3 is telling me I have to be afraid of this twink? (I’m gay it’s not an insult)

The movie made me hate toothless because he JUST met the ugly lightfury and he’s so obsessed with her he leaves hiccup with literally no affection. Like, wut. And why did they make the light fury so much like a girl if she’s a wild animal. She should’ve been so much tougher if she lived in the wild

I agree. I am disgusted by her design. Dragons like Meatlug or Stormfly absolutely dont look like girls and thats how its supposed to be - besides if the light fury got abused by humans why isnt there even a single scratch on her?

This...... i dont even......... this review is almost WORD FOR WORD exactly ho i would review it. amazing. i do think the main strength of this franchise was the animation, music, and characters more than the plot. but i think the music (mostly in the first two movies) are stellar as well as the animation and it is easy to get emotionally attached to the characters. love your channel and especially httyd edit: my characters i mean the main characters not including the other dragon riders i agree that those were lacking

One slight correction, the series has 118 episodes, not more than 150, unless there are more seasons I don't know about...

I just saw the film, and I have to say that underwhelming is a good way to describe it. Much of the film is flawed and nonsensical, to the point where events happen because they need to happen, rather than because of good writing. There's not much in the way of character growth, the bad guy is ultimately uninteresting, though he has a good introduction in the beginning. One of the worst flaws is that there's little to no tension. The film never makes you believe that the heroes could lose, or that there's any real danger to them. The baddies are incompetent to them the point them that you'll find yourself asking how they ever became a significant threat in the first place. The film is good looking, but nothing we haven't seen before. From the trailers I was really hoping DreamWorks had pulled out all the stops to give us something really fantastic and visually engaging foe the finale, but it's really just more of the same. Where they did get creative was with the designs of the Dragon armors, each uniquely tailored to a rider. Beyond that though, there's little else to grab the attention. Overall as much as I hate to say it, the movie is pretty mediocre, especially for the grand finale to a story that started off with so much potential. By all means see it if you want, but don't expect anything fantastic.

Fun fact: The tail that Hiccup made for Toothless to fly on his own was first shown in a Christmas special called “Gift of the Night Fury”, which takes place during the very first winter right after the first movie.

I loved this movie so much, this series was my childhood. This was the series that helped me try to do art and write about my character and her dragon. This movie wowed me and yes, I did cry at the end. But this series always boosted my imagination and now I am writing a story about my new character!

I think the film would've been iconic if a few things were changed. 1. Development The film felt rushed thus making many of the audience feel like the movie is incomplete as seen in the comment section. Hiccup and Toothless' friendship had no *proper* build-up, no tension, and the decision felt just so wrong. The reason why I think the film is rushed, incomplete, etc, is because of the Light Fury. This concept was not only predictable, it was unoriginal as hell. You could've replaced her with a female Night Fury and the film would be a billion times better. Because of the Night Fury the relationships in this film would be at a higher stake, higher tension, and a hard decision. 2. Characterizations Some of the characters besides the dragons are so incomplete and rushed as well. Snoutlout hitting on Hiccup's mom just not only feels wrong it feels out of nowhere, disgusting, and innapropriate. Not only that, Snoutlout is a minor compared to Valka and in addition, she was already in a relationship with Stoick. So why are they basically dumping that and replacing it with someone else that's still young? What about one of the wing maidens? Why not he be with one of them instead of her? This feels out of character but also odd. Another character to point out is the most predictable and boring villain of the series, Grimmel. Who the hell is he? A Night Fury killer. That's it. All we know is that he kills Night Furies because he killed one where it slept and the town praised him for it so he decided to hunt every one of them down. How is that a character? How is he dangerous? He's only a Night Fury hunter and expert. Nothing else. Why did he kill the Night Fury? Was he bullied by other kids in his village? Was he seen as a failure by the whole town? Did he screw up something? What made him do some of these actions? How did he find the Deathgrippers? How did he train them? When did it take place? Where did it take place? These all go unanswered and we're left with a bland and boring antagonist. This isn't how you write antagonists.

Yeah tbh I don't really understand why people always quickly saying Grimmel was the best villain in the trilogy like that dude just a random evil Hiccup who exists out of nowhere just there to had purpose for the plot I heard the initial plan of bringing Drago back in the third movie that could've been better for Drago's development which he's lacked in the previous movie than Grimmel

Well even though the first two Shreks are great, Shrek 3 is awful and Shrek 4 is mediocre. The Dragon movies are all at least decent. The first was amazing, the second was solid, and the third one was fine.

I feel like this movie should have been about hiccup after he had become already father. That fhe series would have been about a boy learning to understand his father, a boy becoming a man after losing his father, and a man learning from the example of his father to become a better one. Then his conflict would be between choosing between wanting to keep his best friend in his life and caring for not only his village but also his family. And the his relationship with Astrid could have progressed more because in this movie it didn't feel like they progressed much from the previous movie to me.
