I like that How To Train Your Dragon's theme wasn't overcomplicated, but it could've used one more ingredient: Grimmel's motive in detail. Expanding on Grimmel's care 4 ppl, that he'll bring "peace to the ppl of this world", and how dragons are "the undoing of civilization", could've added one mor layer to the theme and made it less vague about how sending away the dragons also helps humans. I get that the film didn't really care about humans' well being, but it would've followed Httyd1 's theme that it's a both sides thing: both fight to eat, both kill, and both hav feelings. I think including that Grimmel as a person also had loved ones (as originally planned) would've helped the film a lot with looking less hateful towards humans and being less vague with its theme of doing what's right 4 your loved ones rather than wat comforts you.

If there’s one thing what Dreamworks does better than modern Pixar with both Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon is giving sequels that has actual progression. Seeing characters grow up to be different from the first film gives a satisfaction feeling that you were there to see them develop from what they were before. Both Po and Hiccup were nobodies from the first film and now in the recent film, you see them as somebody that everyone admires

Grimmel is Hiccup. They both fight using their mind to outsmart their opponent instead of brute strength. They both have the same sense of humor and will give their opponent a chance to surrender before making them to. Grimmel is who hiccup would become if he killed toothless, his mirrored image. Thats why grimmel is such a good villain.
@TheDanken07
@TheDanken07 5 жыл бұрын
Really? That is why Grimmel is a good villian? Grimmel is not that smart. He is just generic villian. What about his motivation? He only wants to kill dragons (Night Fury), thats all. Why? You are just comparing him to Hiccup and thats all. Tell me about him. Why He is a good villian? Drago is better than Grimmel. Even Tai Lung and Lord Shen (Kung Fu Panda) are better villians. BTW. Hiccup would never kill Toothless.
@mertbince6582
@mertbince6582 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheDanken07 Grimmel enjoys killing dragons. He's a psycopath and a narcissist who has no empathy for any living creature. At the end when he knew he was gonna die he triee to make sure hiccup was coming with him. He outplayed hiccup at his house and when he found out where they left. He is the night fury killer. Berk had one night fury to fight and they couldnt get rid of him for at least 8-9 years. Hiccup was around 12 when he caught toothless and valka said they where the same age at the second movie so considering dragons mature fast but age slow he was known to berk since hiccup was a kid. Grimmel has to be smart to be able to make sure night furies go extinct and he did it. Toothless is the only one left meaning he cant breed with another one and save his species. Night lights are just half night fury and when they grow up they will breed with light furies as well so their kids will be 1/3 or 1/4 night fury

@@mertbince6582 What makes him different from other villians? Like I said, Hiccup would never kill Toothless. They are completely different characters. He has knowledge about dragons, just like Fishlegs, but that does not mean that he is smart. Why is he a good villian? He is a psychopatch and narcissist, and....? He is just like every villian. Why should we like him? What is his motivation? BTW. Grimmel wanted to kill Night Fury, right? So, why Hiccup didnt leave the Berk (to protect the village)? Grimmel would go after him, right?

You do everything you can to save the person you love, or it's not love. It's really that simple. There is never a situation where you have to choose who lives and who dies...but even if supposing there was, it's not up to you to decide that. I disagree in some aspects. Technically speaking, it is better, like the physics, texture, etc, and that's obviously a given as they've been given a decade to improve. But 1 is much more aesthetically pleasing than 2 and 3 in many parts. Nothing in 3 can ever top The Forbidden Friendship scene and the Flight scene. Those scenes alone make 1 come out on top out of the 3. Nothing really blew me away or gave me chills visually wise in 3 besides the actual hidden world scene.

Having watched the three films back to back, Dragon 2 looks like the most ambitious of the three in its visual presentation to me, aside from The actual Hidden World itself. The water simulation already looked good in Dragon 1, The Hidden World's water look identical to Dragon 2's achievement. The only difference is the updated use of lighting between the two and how it tricks the viewers eye thanks to the MoonRay render. Dragon 2 however is far better at depicting face features in detail in all kinds of lighting. For extra attention to detail, the third film barely shows Hiccup's freckles on his face. And on close ups they look muted, which is unrealistic to how light affect your facial features. The hair is simply too real in the third film, while believable in Dragon 2, which works better with the stylized character designs. Watching someone like Ruffnut turning her head with that realistic hair to that exaggerated face shape is rather jarring. The human character designs that were meant to be stylized regress with all the upgraded realism features, since they don't change their appearances to fit with the upgrades, while placed in a photo real environment in the third film. I can't agree that The Hidden World is the best looking film, certainly impressive, but far from astounding. We barely spent any time in the most visually appealing location (The Hidden World itself). The third film also uses way too much motion blur, which makes it look unfocused as when pausing or taking a screenshot. The clouds, snow, armours & emotive facial expressions holds up tremendously well from Dragon 2.

The first one was about introducing a friendship between a character who is seperated from his village, who eventually finds a friend who is the last of its kind(they kind of relate) and the beginningof their journey. The second one was about the missing part of Hiccup's life his mother and the movie focuses on Family and unity. And finally the third one was about love as said in the video because before this movie people wondered " is there another night fury out there for toothless?" and this movie gave us the light fury which is a subspecies of the night fury and the last part of the movie (when Hiccups said goodbye to toothless) you saw how he moved his hand away from Toothless's nose which shows the end of the journey that Hiccup and Toothless started in the first movie...Hiccup's hand going towards Toothless's nose. In the end, it is kind of disrespectful to say that this movie was inferior to the others.

Dragon 1- 10/10 best animated movie with the most lovable characters that blends emotion with humor perfectly and has a flawlessly epic soundtrack. Dragon 2- 9.5/10 Very good sequel that has just as good of a soundtrack and a much darker overall tone. It is sad Stoick dies though. Dragon 3- 8.5/10 Another great movie that indeed feels just as quality as the first 2. I am sad Toothless left Hiccup even though he returned for a happy ending. Conclusion- best trilogy ever 28/30 The first movie is my favorite movie ever

This movie was goddamn perfect. I agree with everything you said except one. The scale and stakes in the third were smaller than it's predacessors on purpose. The villain wasn't just the dragon hunters. The hunters were representing the world and humanity. They were showing that no matter how hard Hiccup and Toothless try, there is a big world out there that isn't ready to accept them and that they must live their own lives. The idea that "it's the little things that mater" seemed to be present.

Brilliant! Absolutely goddamn amazing! Even with just the first three minutes and you have gotten me to watch the rest of your video. I cannot express my joy enough. Specifically, I was deeply impressed by someone able to talk about a film's theme and how exactly it is portrayed. And for the record, I 90% agree with practically everything within this video about the topic of theme. Especially how a theme has the potential to be all it takes to make an amazing story. I want to be a professional writer (for both books and films) and the concept of theme is one I will cherish forever. Before, I always felt I was missing something in my writing until I discovered a certain show which opened my eyes to the concept of thematic elements, allowing my writing to finally feel more whole and in turn became one of the many writing fundamentals I keep as a prime and crucial principle. It disappoints me to seldom hear people talk about the importance AND the portrayal of a theme, especially in what is considered popular culture. Sorry for the long comment, I just had to express my... satisfaction? joy? in what you had said in this video. While I would love to talk more about your points, I need to go and sleep (its 2AM)... also I'm brain dead at this point. Anyway, you, my friend, have earned yourself a like and favorite (and a spot in my private playlist for storytelling advice). Thank you and have a wonderful day! **EDIT:** The one part that does irk me is your slight mis-definition of the theme in your initial parts. Theme is the central (or one of many at times) message of a story. "Love" is NOT a theme; it is a motif or thematic aspect/symbol. "Love" is not the message; "Love is______" is a message. Just a small detail that some people get wrong at times. AP Literature was kicking in, sorry! Otherwise, good job on the video!

You know why letting go is more loving than holding onto things? Because it's sacrifice. And it's not meant to be joyful, because true love is suppose to hurt when it is rejected, but why do we do it so willingly? (besides how questionable that is) because love doesn't think of itself, the very principle of love is to think of other's before yourself.

Dreamworks is widely considered to be inferior to Pixar, but one thing they exceed at is making great sequels. They're more consistent that Pixar's sequels. Toy Story 2 and 3 were the only good sequels they made so far. The Incredibles 2 was ok, Monsters University was passable at best, Finding Dory wasn't bad, but it was undeniably a cash grab and Cars 2 and 3 sucked ass.

horaciosi the real reason HTTYD works so well is because it’s directed by the same guy. It’s consistent in its storytelling and shows. Cars 2 and 3 were directed by different people, which is why there was no continuity. TS is something else altogether. It works although it had different directors. Idk about finding dory and MU.

Incredibles 2 was great, Monsters University was a prequel, not a sequel. Finding Dory was also great, definitely not a cash grab (pixar doesn't do cash grabs), and Cars 2 wasn't good, wasn't bad, but Cars 3 was as good as Cars. The difference between Dreamworks and Pixar is that there is no bad Pixar movie.

The Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon trilogies are legitimately 2 of the best trilogies of all time. The only trilogy that's definitively better is Lord of the Rings. Also, Toy Story 3 (and now 4) feel too much like repeats of the narrative progression that TS2 gave us. It's just another way of phrasing what happens when your owner doesn't want you anymore. They all have different plot lines (while 1 and 2 have similar plots just with the main characters switched), but TS3 and TS4 really didn't need to exist since they didn't explain anything new. Panda 2 and 3 actually continue the story and focus on different goals. Panda 1 was about becoming more physically powerful, Panda 2 more emotionally stable, and Panda 3 more spiritually enlightened. The plot lines were also different and were heavily swayed by the characters around Po. The villains mirror Po's goals too, which further boost the goals of each movie. I have no issue stating that the Kung Fu Panda series is better than the Toy Story series. I could make a similar argument for Dragon too.

Not like other that clam them self to be movie explaining but just show and telling about the movie that key points are ignored or not explain properly or was thrown in personal opinion. Especially about how to train your dragons the hidden world, a lot of the video clam to explain or find thing that you may have missed but at the end a lot of them is just show and telling or making up things that are not true. HTTYD 3 unpopular opinion my favourite of the Trilogy and certainly the most underrated, I've never gotten why the fans call it the weakest? It still has the theme of love from the first 2 films. The stakes are so high to the point where they have to leave old Berk, Grimmel is the best villain, The Light Fury was the character I akways prayed would come into the series as Toothless deserves a girlfriend. Astrid gets more screen time than ever and the ending couldn't be more perfect. I could go on and on about what the 3rd movie did right that the haters overlook!

I do think it's the weakest of the three, but that's like looking at the bronze medalist at the Olympics and saying they're the weakest there. The entire trilogy is incredibly solid, but there's just a few more minor flaws in HTTYD 3 than in the previous two. For example, HTTYD 3 was a bit too "busy," which made the pacing a bit frenetic; however, as stated in the analysis here, the fact all those plot threads were so tightly-connected to the theme kept it from leaving "busy" territory to get into "messy" territory.
@r.c.c.10
@r.c.c.10 2 жыл бұрын
It's weirdly my favourite of the three but I actually think it is the weakest of them. Why? Because if you take out of the film everything except the beginning and the end, the story doesn't change much. What carries the film is the original premise of Hiccup and the eventual change of the end. It has a good theme that when it's executed works really well, but besides that the film itself has it big dose of "mistakes": the plot is VERY simple, the villain is not good, the supporting cast isn't special either... I don't know why it's my favourite, maybe simply because it's more fluent and beuatiful overall, haha. I remember the comparisons between Toy Story 4, Frozen II and HTTYD 3 and in my opinion Frozen II easily takes the edge. It has the most complex story, themes, characters and execution of them all. It has its mistakes here and there but it's the constant relevance of its story what makes it the superior one for me.

I watched HTTYD 1 as a child with my family. I watched HTTYD 3 as an adult, not a month after I had moved to a different country, away from my family. Needless to say, I was sobbing uncontrollably by the end of the movie, and I couldn't understand why. Then a family friend pointed out that the movie themes were very relevant to my place in life right now, and my father (over video chat) pointed out that the movie itself effectively bookended my childhood and marked the beginning of my move into adulthood. So, yeah, I recognized that the movie had some odd story telling choices as I watched it - I constantly though "well this is... not that good, but it still looks nice, but still..." - but by the time the movie ended and the theme hit me, the movie was elevated to a charming but flawed sequel to something I will probably remember for the rest of my life.

Eventhough I agree with you on how great the theme was introduced in this 3rd movie, I just wanted to add that I also thought it artistically totally lived up to the 2 others. The music was as amazing as in the two first movies (maybe it's just me but I enjoyed even more hearing recuring themes throughout the story this time) And the images ! Gosh ! There are a few sequences of flying dragons that I found so well done that it got me out of the story for one or two sec just to appreciate the beauty of the shot. Same for colours (in the hidden world sequence especially, but again, in the whole movie as well). And just a quick disclaimer, there has been so much technologic progress over the decade in terms of animation that in this way, you can't argue over which of the 3 installments has a better quality (it is actually noticable during the end credits as we get shots of the first and second movies mixed with some of the last one, and you can clearly spot some difference, which I also found pretty appreciable) But with that said I liked your video very much and found your analyze really truthfull...
