Nobody talks about this, but I absolutely love how STRANGE Hiccups mother is. She has been immersed in the world of the dragons for so long that she is acting like one at some points, when she’s intrigued by something, the way she talks and her body language. One of my favorite characters for sure. Also, while being more open minded than Stoic in the particulars of the Viking culture, it is so interesting that she is just as close minded in her particular set of beliefes. They are polar opposites, and neither of them willing to find a way across the ideological devide between them.

Yeah it’s like they’re both extremes and Hiccup is somewhere in the middle. Like he’s the bridge for both of their ideologies and that’s why he’s the one that makes the most improvements

not just the perfect trilogy but also the perfected animated series "school of dragons" and "race to the edge". They basically took more depth showing the adventures with almost half the dragons shown in the series and how hiccup and astrid relationship developed. heck, even the 2 games adapted from them is nice. one where you play with a specific character raising dragons, fighting, racing, doing events and farming and the other is basically a city building game with dragons.

The first two films are great, the third one can be either great or controversial depending on if you consider the Dreamwork Dragons tv series canon, in part because the tv series expanded on the personalities of the other vikings so much that when the third movie uses them more for comedy, it can be rather aggravating that they are used in such one-note manners. Regardless, HTTYD is still a series that I enjoy, with movies that I can look back on fondly.
@BoolianKazooka

The thing is that the third movie does make subtle nods to the show. These can be dismissed pretty easily if you’re keen on having the show be non-canon though.

My main issue is that the takeaway message kinda contradicts the other two? 1 said "challenge stereotypes about others and use your brain to be brave." 2 said "people can change but some choose not too and that doesn't mean you can't keep trying on others." Despite the happy ending, I feel like 3's moral is "if people don't accept those who are ostracized, hide them until it's acceptable"

I was going through some really difficult stuff when i discovered the first movie, but the idea of freedom through flying helped me through it; this fantastical world of dragons gave me an escape. Then, the second movie introduced the idea of identity to me; not having to be one specific person - « you have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon. »Then the third movie gave me permission to let go. I got through the hard stuff, I had my escape, now it’s time to move on and focus on myself and my life. I adore this franchise so much, it made such an incredible impact on my life. I’m so happy to see people acknowledging it’s greatness :)

One of my favorite parts of HTTYD is that it rewards you for watching the shows, it’s not entirely necessary, but it rewards you with great moments and callbacks. this series has brought me to tears several times. i'm not even referring to what happens during the second and third movies (no spoilers. if you know you know) i just mean the existence of something so beautiful. every now and then i still listen to the soundtrack in full, when i was younger it literally used to bring me to tears because of how mighty and 'epic' (word ruined by the internet) the songs sounded, they were so impactful, even when the violins became quiet and subtle it still touched my heart. this franchise is such a huge part of my childhood (even the third movie still feels nostalgic even though it only came out a couple years ago) and it always will be. it sparked my love for mystical, streamlined, and mighty creatures- it's a huge reason as to why i'm still very much interested in palaeontology. i want to give everyone involved in this franchise a huge kiss. except for whoever is responsible for the nine realms, fuck that dogshit show, it unravels bits of the lore so unnecessarily and it's not even done right.. side note: while the light fury is cute, it doesn't make sense to me that night furies and light furies are separate things yet are only one gender- it would be fine if their offspring would only be one or the other depending on gender, but the night lights have both colours? maybe i've got it wrong? would love if someone corrected me! sorry for the ramble i'm neurodivergent and obsessed with nostalgia.

The Red Death(Dragon from the first movie) is the “queen” of dragons much like a wasp queen or queen bee type character where as the Alpha from Httyd 2 is much more like the Wolf pack type leader of dragons and has much more control over the dragons in a more natural way.

there are quite a few queens throughout the franchise (eg. the fireworm queen, she's so cool) but they don't really exhibit the same behaviour. there's also the green death (red death's sister, i believe) in one of the mobile games who is pretty friendly from my understanding. i think the red death was just a nasty dragon lol

@@pogpogpog7507 perhaps. I just say “Queen” of dragons as a catch all for the bee like behavior she seems to cause dragons to exhibit. I just like that his leg didn't magically grow back, they allowed him to miss a leg, and they show him adapting to his missing limb instead of reveling in his misfortune, it sets a good example for children that they can still do what they want within their limitations. It reminds me of a farmer that lost both arms from a young age and started using his feet for everything even while he was in the hospital, he just lifted the blanket up with his foot because he was cold. There's videos of him even working on tractors with his feet.

I love this summary of the trilogy. Love your takes on what happens and love your tier list of the movies. The third is def 50/50. Villain is amazing, the progression of character between Hiccup and Toothless is great, but every "side" character kind of just pulls it down. The "Main character" building is amazing in this trilogy, from Stoic, Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid and Gobber. But the "lesser" characters were so one-dimensional it brought the series down a chunk. These are my top loved animated movies and it's so heartwarming to see others share the sentiment

A detail I don't see talked about at all is when in the third movie Hiccup is saying goodbye to Toothless, the last thing he does is remove his hand from Toothless's head while he looks away. A direct callback to the first one where he first puts his hand Toothless's head while looking away, marking the start of their bonding. In the first one it was done to symbolize their beginning while in the third one, when it was done in reverse, it marked their end.

I think the reason why grimmel is more intimidating than drago is because a) grimmels accomplishments are more impressive, nearly wiping out an entire species of dragon especially night furies as powerful as they are is more impressive than abusing a bewilderbeast from birth to control through fear to control other dragons through the bewilderbeast and b) drago is the shouting big buff raw power villain, grimmel is the smart, confident, slender type villain and the smarter the villain the more intimidating they tend to be, especially considering grimmels intentions

Honestly, the second and third movies were good, but the original How to Train Your Dragon is a true masterpiece. Unlike the second and third movies in the series (and the majority of films in the genre), the original How to Train Your Dragon is so good that it doesn’t need a villain to create artificial conflict. The film is a coming of age story of a boy who gains acceptance by his father and community by being boldly and unapologetically himself, saving both his people and the dragons by daring to see the kindness in a seemingly violent creature. The conflict is internal, within Hiccup himself and his relationship with his father and community, and that’s what makes it so powerful and empathetic. Add to this the unconventional bond that Hiccup and Toothless form throughout the movie, and stunning flight scenes with beautiful visuals and a soundtrack that makes you feel like you truly are soaring through the skies on the back of a dragon, and you have a perfect movie.

Not to pull an "achtualleey 🤓" moment but toothless' love interest from the third film is actually an entirely different species. You can see others in the scene where they go to the hidden world. That's also why their offsprings are hybrids Also the alpha dragon lore is explored and explained in other media iirc. There's several shows, several comics, junior novels, there's games but they're half canon most of the time. So much lore I love dearly

They didn't just survive the Red Death because of how Toothless showed Hiccup that dragons aren't fireproof on the inside; it was a combination of other observations and things he was told. Like, Gobber says to destroy a dragon's wings, so Hiccup has Toothless shoot the Red Death's wings. Hiccup also learned from loosing the cheat sheet that dragons have a tough time "braking" when falling from a great height, so what does he do? Takes the Red Death up into the stratosphere. All these factors combine to act as failsafes for each other. If they couldn't get it to fly high enough, they made sure the wings were inoperable. If they had the height but the wings were fine, they caused the distraction of igniting the fire inside it, where it's not fire proof. It's actually brilliant that Hiccup wins that fight using a combination of what Gobber said (destroy the wings), what Toothless taught him (not fireproof on the inside) and his own observation (dragons can't brake well at certain speeds/heights). He's taking inspiration from both sides of the coin, the viking and the dragon... and throwing in a little Hiccup flair to take the win.

She's not stupid, just moments after flying with hiccup and spending time with him, she knows who he is and fully supports him. Like the chemistry of these virtual characters is just *chef's kiss*. Since then, she supports him, he supports her, they are like THE couple, amazing people, they were written so well, like oh my god, insert Arnold's dialogue about how it feels to go to the gym. That's how it feels to have these two interact. Also, Toothless is more like a cat than a dog, cause they literally looked at cats for reference for Toothless.

My only gripe with the third movie is Grimmels death. Basically died almost the same way drago did, I kept thinking he was still possibly alive (sure a fall from that height would feel like pavement) but I still felt like his death could be better. The Red Death exploded from the inside, Drago was forced to drown due to his disability to swim, Grimmel falls into water… He could’ve been Eaten by his own naturally ravenous dragons, executed by his “allies” for turning on them. I’m just saying it could’ve been better

Honestly the score is perfect. The bagpipes work so well and it just HITS. Even the spin-offs like “HTTYD: Race To The Edge” has n absolutely beautiful score with amazing character arks. Not only are the movies great, but the tv shows are too (minus the new one on peacock)

For your next review can you do 'The Adventures of Panda Warrior'? Literally just a Kung Fu Panda tax right-off with the most insanely stacked cast of voice actors: Rob Schneider, Norm Macdonald, Tom Kenny, Haylie Duff, Lauren Elizabeth, and Jackie Chan.

Something cool I noticed, I like how in the first movie stoic is looking for the best of dragons, or the hidden world of dragons to hunt em down. Hiccup in the third movie tries to find the actual hidden world not the dragons, but not to kill but to live with them. First movie Hiccup ends up leaving killing the Alpha, third movie Hiccup ends up leaving the alpha. Cool thing

on the topic of drago bludvist's alpha dragon (bewilderbeast): it's shown in the series that drogo found it as an egg, which is why it obeys him, because he literally raised it from infancy to listen to him out of fear.

I have a confused relationship with the race to the edge show, I think it's great because it gives us easily the series' best villain in the form of Vigo, this guy is just as smart if not smarter than hiccup and their multi-season rivalry is so compelling, Vigo is the only villain who truly gets under Hiccup's skin, like Hiccup genuinely hates him and by the end just tries to attack him on sight. Vigo is merciless and brilliant, like there's a time where Hiccup and his friends crash Vigo's dragon auction, using all of Berk's gold inorder to get it, they free the dragons, but Vigo has the gold, they go after him and he throws the chest into the ocean, Hiccup retrives it, but Vigo switched the chests on him and gets away with the gold. But that's only the setup, because a later episode shows Vigo imprisoning a giant sea dragon in berk's waterways to block any traders from reaching the island, since he has berk's gold, they need to rely on trade to survive, so by blocking the supply lines, he tries to starve them into surrender. Naturally his plan fell apart, but not because Hiccup outwitted him. Honestly the last two seasons of the show aren't great, and they create a bunch of unneccessary plotholes in the last episode, but the seasons are worth seeing just for the episode "Tripple cross", which is the best in the show, it's the conclusion of Vigo's story and has him actually change, and in my opinion that makes the second movie so much better, Hiccup doesn't believe he can change Drago because he's stupid, he believes it because a guy he was convinced was pure evil actually did change, so Hiccup's faith makes so much sense. Vigo is so great and there's only one bad episode for him and that's the one where they get the gold back in a very conveniant way. No, the reason I'm not sure how to feel about Vigo is that he's too great, by comparrison Grimmel is honestly kind of a moron, and because of that I don't buy it when Hiccup says "are enemies are getting smarter" because of one guy who's maybe the second smartest villain he's faced who is surrounded by morons. Because I don't buy that premise, it makes it hard for me to buy that Grimmel is a big enough deal for the dragons to flee over. I feel Vigo's story adds a lot to the second movie but really takes away from the third, definately a great character though.

While I would say there are other well-rounded trilogies (Pirates of the Carribean, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Kung Fu Panda), this is one of the best. I'd say that the movies just got better as they went along. The climax of the third movie is genuinely beautiful. The animation, acting, and music are all just fantastic. These are also some of the few movies where I actually cared about a romance plot.

So the Light Fury is, if I recall right, supposed to be a similar subspecies to the Night Fury; as far as this movie establishes things, her species isn’t necessarily extinct (though likely is endangered), but Toothless is the sole survivor of his until they have babies. Which definitely adds to the stakes of Grimmel’s genocidal campaign, and also explains why she’s white (coming from someone who finds “dark male light female a tired and overused trope”). Apparently Dean DuBois had intended to bring Drago Bludvist back in the third movie, and intended to redeem him, but was convinced (by Steven Spielberg) that the film wouldn’t really support the story along with everything else it was doing; I definitely agree on that. Not against the concept but between the last film’s message and Drago’s character it definitely wouldn’t have worked there…
