you know the funny thing about that? is that both of them are set in an ancient foreign country mixing mytological lore and real life philosophy, and they are both heros journeys that they can be both funny and dramatic, without using modern pop culture humor. And thats a giant problem dreamworks suffers pop culture garbage, i mean sure the first two shrek movies did this fine as parody of fairy tales, but after that every dreamworks movie was trying to mimic shrek with the pixar type of story line of what if. shark tale: what if the fish has a comunity ...with attitude! madagascar: what if animals can leave the zoo.. with attitude! monsters vs alien: what if monsters defend us for great dangers ...with attitude! boss baby: what if.. you know the drill. honestly they should go to the, for a lack of a better term, the shonnen anime route and select a specific time period, with a specific philosofy and lore (both real and fictional), with a specific scense of humor and they can make a franchise by beeing its own thing, without appealing to the american audience with pop culture references, or an edgy sence of humor, sure animes can do that too but they also create a world with their own identidy with timeless themes. the closest thing dreamworks did that reach the levels of kung fu panda or dragons is, how the other one said, rise of the guardians, but since most people forget about that film (ironacly one of the key themes of the film) they didn't give them the chance to explore it, even friggin puss in boots has some type of dignity despite having one, or two moments of "but the charts says.."

The villain is what Hiccup could have become if he what through with killing Toothless in the first movie. He killed a nightfury, got a taste for it and couldn't stop himself until they were all gone. And they move the dragons because they know people will always come to take them away or kill them, so they take the who village because Hiccup feels they can all live with them in peace to protect each other

With Valka, I think it's excusable she doesn't do much parenting. Considering the fact she's only known her son for a year, while Stoick had 20 years of ups and downs with Hiccup. Valka doesn't do much parenting because she was never really a mother to Hiccup. And I think that's highlighted a bit at near the end of the movie, when Hiccup is frustrated and upset about losing to Toothless to Grimmel. Because where a mother figure would step in to encourage her son, she instead advises Astrid to go talk to him. She does know quite a bit about him, but not as much as Astrid to comfort him. Am I explaining this right?

I interpreted it kinda different, though I agree that she definitely didn't raise him like stoik and probably doesn't feel she has the connection to do so. I felt that, though out the movie, she kinda coached Astrid on how to be a wife for a chief, something she has had some experience in. I thought she felt like "this is not a mothers place, this is a moment were the wife is supposed to give encouragement and stand by his side, not the mother.

Some made solid counterarguments. Since Berk knows where the Hidden World is (at least Hiccup and Astrid do) they will be "targeted" for information on where the dragons are now. Also, in the past movies, it was emphasized that the Vikings and Dragons are stronger together and the world is better for it, but the 3rd one retconned the message of the 2 movies... But despite those criticisms, I still like the ending of the movie and the series as a whole.

The second one had more backstory and impact. A major character (Stoick) was killed by another major character (Toothless). That is pretty much unheard of in a pg animated film. Also Drago Bloodfist was a better villain in my opinion. He used abuse and fear to control his dragons. He also had a reason for hating dragons, his village was burned down by dragons. Grimmel didn't have a backstory, he just killed Nightfuries because his village praised him for killing them. He also went down a lot easier than Drago, despite that fact that he was a lot smarter and more skilled in battle strategy. He didn't even have a proper face off will Hiccup. He just got pushed off of the Lightfury and that was it. I think the final showdown scene should have been longer, it was kind of anticlimactic. But overall the 3rd one was a close second to the 2nd movie.
@afroallura3791
@afroallura3791 5 жыл бұрын
Jason Martin Agree for the most part, but I feel the third film was a vastly different film to the second. The third felt way more character-driven, and focused primarily on the bond between Hiccup and Toothless and the people important to them. I think due to the strong themes, the villain was more or less just a catalyst that helped Hiccup and the Berkians face the fact that it was time to let go. That being said, I wish they hadn’t built the villain up to be such an all-encompassing threat in the trailers; I was definitely more terrified of Drago. I like to think of the second one as the “Empire Strikes Back” of the trilogy haha.
@SasukeUchiwa104
@SasukeUchiwa104 5 жыл бұрын
Well the reason I was kind of disappointed with Grimmel was because they said he was this all powerful terrifying villain like we had never seen before, but he went down without a proper fight. Also I heard from some people that Drago was supposed to appear in the 3rd film. He didn't die at the end of the 2nd one, he just fled with his Bewilderbeast after it lost it's dominance over the other dragons to Tootgless. He was also supposed to be the finale villain originally, and I honesty agree. He would have been terrifying enough to shock Hiccup into hiding the dragons. Grimmel wasn't that threatening, at least his original goal wasn't. His main goal was to just to kill Toothless because he liked to hunt Nightfuries as a sport. Grimmel hated all dragons and wanted to use them as tools of war and make them destroy other dragons, effectively making dragons destroy themselves. I kind of wonder if another reason Hiccup decided to hide the dragons even after Grimmel's defeat is because Drago is still alive. I wonder why they didn't just kill him off if they decided not to have him appear in the final film. Over all I thought the 3rd was great, I just think certain things could have been done better.

Those Dragon Trappers wanted an Army of Dragons for their own. And Berk was full of them. Their motivation was greed. And power. Simple. Not ALL villains need a tragic backstory. Sorta the same with Grimmel, as he's a parallel to Hiccup. Where Hiccup freed his Night Fury, Grimmel killed his. Setting him on a very different path. He became a hero, people celebrated him. So he set out to kill the others, finish the job. But strange thing, it's not just greed and fame, it's sort of in a messed up caring(?) way I guess? It struck me when he was talking with Hiccup in his house. "That sort of thinking is dangerous" He sees Hiccups dream of a world where dragons and Vikings live together in peace as dangerous. A foolish ideology. And that kinda related to the real world a bit. Do you get what I'm saying?

Yeah, I got that Grimmel was a opposite to Hiccup and if you think about it when Hiccup downed Toothless and was ready to kill him, Toothless just let it happen. He didn’t fight back and just let himself accept his fate. So you can imagine that when Grimmel found his Nightfury, it probably reacted similarly except he actually killed it in that moment which doesn’t make him as heroic as he makes himself out to be.
@kurisucosmo7954
@kurisucosmo7954 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Wonderful way to put it, couldn't have said it better. I'm not gonna lie to myself and say that Grimmel is a fleshed out character, or even the best villain of this franchise (that honor goes to Viggo). But he was perfect for what this movie needed, and served as a really great reminder of what Hiccup could have become and didn't because of his own crucial choices. I love the parallels between them, and the fact that at the end of it all, the only way Hiccup beat Grimmel was when he chose Toothless over himself, and when he chose to let go. Great contrast to Grimmel who could never do anything but for himself, and a great continuity of Hiccup making these type of choices is exactly what makes him strong

@@placeholdernameisplacehold7671 and that's what I love about the ending. Because it's a lot more realistic, and it forces us to look at the harsh reality of what humans are capable of and not capable of. Every time there has been a species of huge or powerful animal that humans feared, we either ended up dominating it or it went extinct. There's simply no realistic way for all of humanity and dragons to coexist as equals without massive harm to either species. And no matter the strides of progress made in that regard, it will always be the same. Hiccup has to come to terms with that, and so do we, and I appreciate that the series didn't pander to a false, fluffy version of reality. Besides, the books end the same way, and in there, Hiccup does arguably even more to try to integrate dragons with humans and still fails. People don't succeed every single time they set their mind to something, and that's a part of maturing that we all have to go through. It doesn't make all the trials and efforts we put in as pointless or fruitless, because as we can see through Hiccup and Toothless, it can lead to growth and progression regardless of success. Furthermore, even if the results weren't what Hiccup may have wanted, he would have never met Toothless and he would have never become who he is now, and same goes for Toothless. So clearly, it's not pointless, just a sad and unfortunate result
@kurisucosmo7954
@kurisucosmo7954 5 жыл бұрын
@@placeholdernameisplacehold7671 ok, clearly you're a little confused. According to Stoick, the Hidden World always existed, but the dragons and humans we see in the first 2 films knew nothing about it (except for in myth). Sure, dragons may have originally come from the Hidden World thousands of years ago... but there's such a thing as migration, and that means that the current dragons we see were born in other continents and places (like Berk). They're not all born or come from the Hidden World. So the existence of the Hidden World has nothing to do with the first two films' story, characters, or message at all. And lastly, for the movie's moral to be found in the title is incredibly childish. Yes, it happens sometimes, but it doesn't most of the time. And they only called it How to Train Your Dragon because of the books. But from the beginning of the movies, we can see that the point of these films was the characters of Hiccup and Toothless and they're relationship with each other. And these movies have clearly had the strongest theme of growth and development from the very beginning. It's not that a group of humans living in harmony with dragons is impossible. But for all of humanity and all of dragons to do the same? That is. Please tell me of any powerful species of creature that we haven't dominated and is currently extinct, or is heading toward extinction? Yes, Hiccup and Toothless drastically changed the world around them to live in harmony. And that's great. But that is not the point of these movies. The point of these movies is to tell of a relationship between two characters who change each other for the better. One just happens to be a human, and one a dragon. Is it a shame that Hiccup ultimately fails? Yes of course, but his own victory is to become a leader for his people, just as it is for Toothless to do for his.

If I had to nitpick some flaws about this movie, yeah, some of the comedic bits aren't that good (but a lot of them really are). I also thought the final battle wasn't a visual spectacle like the huge battle in the 2nd act of the 2nd movie, but just like you said... I didn't care, because the stuff they focused on (Hiccup, Toothless, The Light Fury and...the villain) and the thing, the desicion Hiccup took in that momment...it felt so true, so emotionaly moving, so sincere, so powerful, so right...and you can pretty much summarized the whole finale of the movie with those words, it's just perfect, flawless...and despite being a big conclusion to the series and the farwell to this characters, it didn't feel overly-corny like something like the ending of Toy Story 3. It just felt perfect. And just like Kung Fu Panda, (and like you mentioned) they grew the characters, in other anumated franchises you can feel like they've learned and stick to the lesson of the previous chapters, but in How To Train Your Dragon you can feel like the character has grown, not change completely, but grown as a person. Especially the 3 main characters they decided to focus on. Hiccup started as a whimpy outcast kid (that despite saying he wanted the approval of the people around you, he always stayed true to himself while in other movies they would have the main character try to change who he is just to learn the lesson he already knows), to a grown adolescent who is brave but diplomatic, and has to learn to accept his responsabilities as a leader, and then to a leader who has to face the biggest change in his life, not starting his life into a new land with his people, but to let go of his best friend and say goodbye to him. And in every instolment they made sure to show how Toothless started as sort of a mirror reflection of Hiccup, as an outcast who responded to Hiccup's mercy with more mercy, to a companion, to be his most trusted and dearest friend. Yeah, the idiots that accompany Hiccup are still idiots (although the two twins had some of the funniest momments). I would've liked to see more of the mother (even though I think the dynamic they had between her and Astrid, as a mother talking wisdom into her son's fiancee, was great). Yeah, the villain was kinda underweling, despite the fact that they were setting him up to represent the mirror opposite of Hiccup, they didn't do anything with it. And I would have loved if we had spent more time in the (gorgeous looking) Hidden World (as the tittle kinda suggests we should). But I just don't care, this was just a great ending to a great series. I had to try super hard to not be the only one crying in a room full of kids.

From what I could tell, Grimmel's motivation was more than just being a hero. When Drago first met Hiccup, he said he was bring "freedom to the people of this world"; when Grimmel explains why he's doing what he's doing to Hiccup, he says he's bringing "true freedom to the people of this world," quoting Drago, but making it clear he's not out to conquer, but to liberate. He shows this to be true when he reveals to the warlords that he's going to kill Toothless. Doing so would end the warlords control of Berk's dragon army, and the dragons and hunters would destroy one another. This would satisfy Grimmel, as there would be no Night-furies, no dragons, and no tyrants left. Plus, Hiccup would have learned that he's nothing without Toothless. Too bad for Grimmel... that didn't work out.

6:10 Oh yep. I think that happened because: a) Gobber was originally going to be the one that died in the second movie, not Stoick. b) Valka had a bigger role in the second movie as the villain but that idea was ultimately scrapped. The Weird thing about Dreamworks Movies is that they universaslly look like the worst movie ever in the trailers. Me: "What? Jack Black playing a fat lazy panda that wants to learn Kung Fu? That's the dumbest idea i've ever heard." Me "Okay, the last one was great, but there's no way they can capture lightning in a bottle a second time. Gary Oldman as an evil peacock and just more Jack Black being a fat lazy Panda that wants to learn Kung Fu." Me "Okay, two flukes, now they're gonna ruin the whole story about the Goose being his dad and make some misguided message about Bryan Cranston not being his real dad." Couple things.. I felt that they left their home NOT because of this evil guy with two dragons.. I think its because of the consistency they have of having to defend themselves. Bringing new dragons to the island invoked chaos internally, which is why hiccup received that one advice.. "sooner or later you are gonna spark a fight you cant win" which is why they needed to move on. Hiccup even mentioned how hid father was searching for the hidden world... so the motion to move even preceded the events before this movie. Also the animation.. I felt was great, the one big evidence I caught the most was how Hiccup painted the new tail for Toothless. He used black paint and as he painted you could tell the difference between dry and wet.. and that effect was brilliant.. even though it was a very small detail.

I've been waiting for this review ever since I saw the film! It released in January in Norway, and I've been waiting for this film to release in the states just to see people's reactions and reviews of it! Though one thing I don't get, and it honestly kinda sadens me that I've seen NO-ONE TALK ABOUT THIS Yet: JOHN POWELL'S AMAZING SCORE!! Seriously, the evolution of just the main theme is incredible. From the very first film's gentle start, introducing us to this world. To the second film's masterful opening theme of mixing a lot of themes from the first film and having fun with them, aswell as just confidently welcoming you back to this world, to this third film.. Where they build up to it.. Honestly it might take 'a bit' too long for my liking, but it's all worth it for just THAT PAYOFF! A shift in melodies, and a build up, and then just those first few notes.. Ahh!! It's a beautiful grand welcome to the final chapter. (Granted it didn't make me cry as fast (I mean HTTYD2 still has that record of 28 seconds) but I mean 4 minutes isn't awful either to be honest! Great review though, but man it just kinda sadens me that NO-ONE seems to talk about that element, and I think that the soundtrack for all three of these films is phenomenal and deserves A LOT more credit than it gets.

I disagree a bit on the mother point. It's true that she doesn't really have a "moment" like in the other films, but I actually thought she was being a parent GREAT for the stage of life he's in. He's growing up, the chief of a whole village--he needs room to grow and get the hang of things and she gives him that space to do so. Take the raid, for example: she perches in the rafters and watches the youngsters battle (obviously ready to swoop in if needed but trying to let them figure it out and make their own mistakes first). She may have been a bit underused for the film but not egregiously so since the focus of the film is on romantic love this time, not parental themes.

Unlike my brother, i actually have a soul and i actually cry at the movies. The last times i cried at the cinema was when Dobby the house elf died, Yondu from Guardians died, stoick from dragons died, and the end of Mary Poppins returns (as the first film was a part of my childhood) (and mary poppins 2 is the film that made both me and my mother cry in the car).

I have seen this movie....I would also see it again. It was an excellent final chapter to an excellent trilogy. The villain was really good. He legitimately scared me. Toothless flirting with his beautiful lady was ADORABLE. He was absolutely twitterpated. The animation was stunning, as always. I loved where they chose to take Hiccup and Toothless in their character arcs....I felt like it was the natural next step for them after Stoick died, but I could tell it was extremely emotional for both of them....especially Hiccup. l could see he had a very painful choice/decision to make, and while I won't say what it was for the sake of spoilers, I was happy when the credits rolled. I think he made the right choice and I respected him for it. I almost wanted there to be one more film just because I don't want to say goodbye (and they did leave it where there is a POSSIBILITY of more), but I think where they left off was perfect. And I will say....this movie achieved something that Jurassic World did not and that is CAMOUFLAGE. With Toothless and his pretty lady, they added an element of camouflage to the characters and they did it extremely well.... As for this Toy Story 4 nonsense.....I am refusing to acknowledge it. I will not be seeing it. Not in theaters, not on DVD. I will watch the REAL Toy Story movies. The trailers look like SHIT. The animation (even for the characters we've been with for all these years) looks CREEPY. And the story sounds like a ridiculous EXTREMELY weak knockoff of the first movie's storyline. Bonnie (like Andy) gets a new favorite toy (INSPIRINGLY named "Forky"....because he's a SPORK and even HE thinks its ridiculous) and Woody has to leave his child and go get him back to Bonnie so Bonnie can be happy. And Bo Peep is back for some reason. We've seen this.....in the first two Toy Story films....and it was SO MUCH BETTER. They ended the Toy Story trilogy PERFECTLY. Woody and company had one last grand adventure, Andy went off to college, and he said goodbye to his beloved childhood toys and left them to Bonnie. It was perfect. I refuse to ruin what is one of Pixar's BEST movie trilogies with this.....shit.

Top 5 Animated Series. 5. Despicable Me- This beats Shrek and Cars because while those 2 only have 1 great film in there This series has 2 really good films and 1 okay film. Score: B- 4. This series has 2 Really good films (1&3) 1 Great film(2) and 1 okay film(4). The okay film kind of pushes it down a bit and since the characters don't have an arc like the next 2 spots it gets the bronze. Score: B+ or A- 2. Kung fu Panda- This Trilogy has 1 Great Film (1) and 1 Excellent film (2) and a Really good film(3). Combine that with characters that grow throughout the series and stellar animation this film gets the 2# Spot. One detail I found interesting was how the moose-dragon hiccup saved in the beginning helped hiccup and his crew escape from Grimmel's hideout halfway through. I thought the point was that the Berkians were happier with the dragons but realised that the dragons staying with them rather than going to the one place that human dangers couldn't follow them was not what was best for the dragons. Both sides may have meshed really well and been happy (even if Gobber was right about overcrowding) but that didn't make it the best choice, so they had to say goodbye. The dragons are safe and the Berkians no longer have a target on their back for any other dragon hunters or trappers inevitably out there

Kung Fu Panda felt like it ended at the right place to the point, and while the ending to this (no spoilers) was satisfying too, I still think the personal/familial connection was more impactful on me than in the new film. Also, while not as much as the first two, Kung Fu Panda had me in tears multiple times, with smart writing, beautiful animation and great comedic timing by Jack Black and the rest of the cast. Though I understand they are kids films, I personally think the comedic relief in these httyd films are too weak and really far from the main story. Honestly, I know that these two franchises are great, and hella entertaining (especially for kids films), but Kung Fu Panda, even the third one, struck a chord that the dragon films never quite did. @@110000116699 Oh yeah, it's awesome. Plot, characters, overall narrative, everything is great. There's alot going on, but they handle it well. Also, the fight scenes are brutal, and intense. Definitely see it in 3d imax

On the point of the nitpicks I absolutely agree, the Astrid (girlfriend/wife) and Valka (mum) point. I think some of Astrid's initiative gets sucked out so Valka can tell her what to do (mostly romance wise), because they didn't have a role for Valka. Snotlout's fighting outfit properly annoyed me because it was /so/ comedy oriented compared to the other badassery from the others. My brother and I both have some problems with this movie largely because the books wrap it up so much better, and it tries the same story of the dragons leaving but it's so much more complex.

If you want the development of these characters and world to be even better I recommend you watch the two shows set in between the first two movies. They aren’t essential to be sure, but they do a great job at the worldbuilding and growth of all the charcters.

One of the weird things that kinda blew me away with animation detail was the little bit of mucous in toddler Hiccup close up scenes! I thought it was adorable and super detailed, not to mention all the freckles he had
@lShadowdark
@lShadowdark 2 жыл бұрын
The thing with the mother of Hiccup is easy to explain: She was abstent from most of his life, he was a toddler when she left and in this movie (or rather the end of the other one) he is like, 18? 20? And she passed that time rising dragons, not his son, so is understandable she doesn't know how to be a mother but rather how to be a owner (of a pet/dragon). For Doung being such a fan of "show don't tell" he seems to miss often this unwritten aspects of storytelling

Let’s be honest, the only reason why the Dragons and Panda movies did so well, they were done by Dreamworks. These movies proved if this studio tried, it could work
@Lauren_210
@Lauren_210 5 жыл бұрын
My main issue with Dreamworks is that they are one of the most inconsistent animation studios out there in terms of film quality. One moment you get passion projects like The Prince of Egypt, the Kung Fu Panda films, and the HTTYD films and then the next moment, you get mediocre/bad movies like Shark Tale, Boss Baby, or Home. The studio acts like a playground see-saw.

This is my favorite in the trilogy :') I didn't full-on cry, but I got a little teary eyed. The way it references the previous films and wraps up the trilogy was so beautifully done SPOILER This and Wreck it Ralph 2 have phenomenal, tough, realistic endings about letting go of people you love.

How to Train Your Dragon 3 has more of a reason to exist. I’m sure Toy Story 4 will be good, but Toy Story 3 is where they should’ve ended it.
