Pet owners have an idea in their heads as to how they would like their pet to behave. The truth is that no one sets out to have a dog with behavioral problems. Yet sometimes, we must cope with the fact that our dogs exhibit troublesome qualities. These include behaviors such as incessant barking, chewing on your possessions and furniture, separation anxiety, and much more.Of course, we want to address the root of the problem rather than simply addressing the manifestation. This is where it’s important to seek professional help from a certified dog training program. visit here t.co/nnY411Q7yg

"If you're watching this video I'm guessing you've probably got a new puppy." Who else is out there watching these videos because Zak is an awesome trainer and they'll use his methods IN THE FUTURE if they actually get a dog? 😂 Update 2023: I have a dog now! Got Clara the Bernese Mountain Dog in July 2022, aged 11 weeks. And yep, I've used HEAPS of info from Zak's videos (and other KZbin trainers) to train her, from the day I got her. I'm far from amazing but she's very good, and has learnt excellent lead-walking manners, an 'emergency' stop, and some hand signs and whistles. She's the love of my life. I like Zak's compassionate approach that includes understanding puppies' natural urge to bite, communicating to the dog what you want and maintaining that bond with your dog. In all the videos I watched before this one, the trainers relied on intimidation, negative conditioning and punishment (leash yanks, poking them in the side, etc.). In those cases the scared and submissive dogs were cowering. They obeyed because they didn't want to be punished again. Not a healthy relationship. Zak's approach may make take more time and dedication, but it's the approach that all dogs - who just want to give unconditional love - deserve.

You have saved our skins! No literally! We have a 12wk old GSD and were at our wits end with the biting. We have yelped, presented and redirected to the point of frustration for the last 4 weeks and still she was biting our flesh, ankles, hands and even started snapping. After watching your video last night I worked more on acknowledging good behaviour (rewarding pats etc without biting) with tiny pieces of chicken and it's working! Wouldn't say we're completely over it but tonight I can at least pat my puppy without fear of losing a finger!

My secret to solving puppy biting is to say ouch in a loud and sharp tone just once. Then s/he will automatically buckle his head back. Once s/he does this, praise him for a few seconds and then they will return to their biting. Repeat this same process until they automatically stop. It depends on your dog how many times it takes for them to understand this method and stop all biting. I used this on my 10 week old maltipoo puppy and he didnt bite me the rest of the day! He hasn't even tried to nip me, my clothes, or my hair for the past few weeks!! 10/10 recommend

@Jessica Maine i feel ya Jessica I'm having the same problem with my 16 week old yellow lab mix puppy, redirecting doesn't work she will ignore the toy completely and aim right for my skin and when i walk away she attacks my ankles and legs. When i tell her Ow! or No! she bites ever harder and will latch on and start to growl. I've got so many bruises and cuts. what I've been doing is walking away from her or putting her in time out if she is over stimulated/tired. she gets very rambunctious and not even treats will calm her down. Also socializing your dog is key. Dogs learn bit inhibition from other dogs. its hard now to do this but maybe a family member has a dog that can come a play for an hour, or sign up for a puppy day camp. I don't know how long this will take as i am only on week 3 and i haven't seen progress :( I'm not gonna give up though. I know she will be a great do,g she is just a nut case sometimes.

@Jessica Maine Same experience. I have a 9 week old Borador puppy (Border Collie/Lab mix) that is hell bent on hunting down my feet and hands. He suddently gets a fit of craziness where he is tugging, growling and biting on my clothes and flesh. Yelping, saying "Ouch" or "No" only make it worse. He is in a state where he does not respond to a treat or a toy. I have to wear socks and full sleeved sweater to make sure it does not hurt. I am getting a professional trainer and joining puppy socialization class to help with his behaviour. Hopefully that would resolve some of this crazy behaviour.

Same here. Our mix (border collie/tibetan terrier) catched our energy when saying "no/auch" loudly, and wanted to bite even more while barking. I started saying no very calmly and it helps him, at least to bite less hard. Training as redirecting him works best, but just for a few minutes. Its all about our own energy, and not letting them get too excited 😅

Jessica Maine I just got a 7 week old puppy a few days ago. I got her from a humane society, and she was separated from her mom and siblings early so her biting is even harder to control. Using the technique of saying ouch makes her bark and bite me more as well. If I turn my back she bites my feet. I redirect her with toys which works sometimes, but she may care about the toy at times and comes back to my feet. I simply pick her up and hold her in one arm until she has a moment of calmness. Your dog may growl at you the first couple times you do it but keep holding them until they are calm for a moment. Eventually they’ll know if they’re calm they be able to get down and resume playing. Then I say yes good girl and put her down and give her a toy. It has been reducing her biting, it’s not gone but it helps. Hope this helps.

I recommend an electric collar. Start with them on a leash and say, "come here" and if they don't immediately turn around, hit either the low static or a low vibrate and say again. Stop when they turn around. This will tell them that the stimulus will end when they listen to you. You can then use the collar to get their attention whenever you want, up to 1000ft away! Just be slow and make sure they understand the first step. DON'T use it as a punishment, but as a way of halting unwanted behaviour, and gaining their attention. Don't over do the shock though, enough to get their attention, but no where near high enough to hurt. Sometimes positive reinforcement doesn't work, so you have to find a way that doesn't include treats to train. I hope this helps. My great Dane was a runner if she wasn't on the leash and a puller if she was, but luckily I found a trainer that showed me the strategy above. Best of luck!

I was getting very discouraged because my 12 week old Boston shows little progress. I realize the issue is primarily me. The biggest difficulty I have is my dogs lunging and latching onto my clothes (and sometimes my flesh in the process). 😟

That was honestly the best part. My pup is 15 weeks and still nips a lot, but after reflecting while watching this video I realized it has gotten better in small ways. It’s relieving to see a professional trainer say it takes a lot of time (even though my pup is older than his at the end of the video 😓).

I'm helping my neighbors train a mastiff puppy. Whenever she bites, I instantly stand up and turn around (after saying "no biting" and pulling her off). Of course I always try to redirect with toys if she looks like she might bite, but if she actually did clamp her daily strengthening jaws on me, I needed it to be very clear that's not acceptable at all. The first time I did this, she was a little confused and tried to get herself back in my line of vision- but she was still in bit mode. Only after she sat or lay down did I immediately turn back and praise her and we continued playing. She didn't bite for a while after that and now after a couple weeks of doing this every day when I come over once or twice, she rarely bites me at all. She had less of a problem with play biting than she did actually wanting to bit you because, (for example) the other dog is being pet, or I "want that treat now". My neighbors don't do what I do though and unfortunately, they still get bit (several times to the point of drawing blood) She is really a brilliant dog and catches on to ideas quick. She learned very quickly that biting the people she played with was not good, but she still bit them or my neighbors' other small dog purposefully when she wanted attention (the neighbors would often yell "ouch" or even hold her firmly whenever she bit. Soon though she'll get to big to hold firmly anymore...). But I didn't do that and it's amazing how fast she understood. Me and this big puppy have a very sweet relationship now and while I definitely wouldn't recommend this method for all dogs, this Mastiff puppy is both amazingly smart and very sensitive to my intentions. She wants so desperately to be on my good side and she's got it pretty well down that biting the me gets her the exact opposite of what she wants. I can't see Zak using this method, especially sense he wants Inertia to do alot of things with her mouth, but we needed it to be very clear that biting people was an absolute no because this dog is going to be huge and her jaws, an intimating sight to behold. It's definitely helped and on top of other training, plenty of play time and cuddles, it's worked well for her and she's greatly improved.

I am currently training my 2nd mastiff breed. 1st was cane Corso (she was so smart) and now training a 12 week old Dogue de Bordeaux. Standing up crossing my arms and looking away works quick, especially for my smaller kids. Even just looking away and taking the hand etc away works pretty well.

As a person who had a wonderful, happy, well behaved dog growing up, I'm now seeing as an adult who just brought home a puppy how much effort my parents put in unbeknownst to me to get him that way. Can't thank youtube and Zak George enough, as his channel and books have been extremely helpful in figuring the pup out. There were a few times I thought... if this dog doesn't listen, I am going to put a safety net under the balcony so I can toss her off. But, I come to a video like this and get idea's and mesh it with what I know already of pup and I go back into the next.... bite, or play, or whatever with a new idea, a new angle and almost a sense of calm.

I adore you Zak George...... I just simply so needed this message. I"m a very expierienced dog owner and amateur trainer and am struggling hard core with my current border collie/kelpie 4 month old foster puppy. You should see my hands. She has broke the skin so many times and yet there isn't an ounce of malicious intent. I had absolutely never dealt with such persistence in a puppy (and I've worked with A LOT). I felt like I was doing all the right things already, slight verbal correction and replace with a toy (and the tips on replacing with a training session were so helpful!). As was the advice that sometimes they just need a little cool down time on their own until their brains are in a calmer state. I knew it would take time but it was so refreshing to see a dog expert like you deal with those same issues for weeks and weeks and gave me such hope to just persevere with doing all the right things and that eventually it will subside. I now feel empowered and ready to take on the mighty Serena!

I just got an 8 week old lab puppy and have been watching all of your videos! She's wearing her harness and leashed to me at all times so I'm controlling her environment, taking her outside every 30 minutes to potty and using my clicker and treats every time she does something I like! (: All thanks to you! Also, I'm currently going to school to become a behavior analyst and love learning about dog behavior. Your videos explain so many great behavioral principles that I'm familiar with and truly believe in! I wanted to ask you what your favorite high value treats are? Also, do you have any suggestions for help with my puppy in the car? She starts to get nervous (whining, panting and yawning) in the car. I feel bad because she had a long trip (3 hours) home from the breeder to me and I'm worried it gave her a bad first experience! Can I help her relax in the car? Thank you for making these great videos and for inspiring me to be the best dog trainer (:
