10% off with my link: hedge.video/midland | Who's looking to level up their workflow and ditch Finder to transfer footage and photos and start using Hedge? This app has been a GAME CHANGER for me when I'm on set and need to capture video from my C300's CFast 2.0 cards to make sure that footage is not only copied to TWO drives but that my CFast cards can be formatted and used again on my shoot if needed. Anybody else dealing with anxiety about offloading media during a shoot?

Thought you might like this one - I know you do a lot of client work. A great way to reliably capture your footage to two drives on set or just after a shoot. Definitely worth a look!

Awesome! So glad it’s going to help your workflow. Using it on set to capture and back up footage or at your studio to copy to storage?

@@matthewTobrien We typically dump all footage from a morning or afternoon/evening shoot as soon as we get back from the field. We shoot wildlife so usually in the field at first light and last light. In between we download/backup. So doing this 2-4 times with Finder, and thinking/hoping you got everything on all the drives (while tired and anxious to get some rest) is sketchy at best. This app will save a ton of time when we dump footage and a lot of anxiety about doing it right! Hope you have affiliate link for the purchase.

Thanks for the details on your workflow. Sounds like the perfect solution for you. I did contact Hedge for an affiliate link, but they weren’t able to put something together before the release of the video. Hope to get an affiliate link next week!

I like to rename my files with what project they're related to. Tips on how to rename files on both drives after copying? I will sometimes have multiple projects on 1 card so it's hard to rename them through Hedge
@matthewTobrien2 жыл бұрын
I'd have to look into that - aside from renaming BEFORE you copy via Hedge, your best bet is to rename what you copied in two batches using Finder or A Better Finder Rename. That could be a great feature update to A Better Finder Rename - being able to rename two sets of files at the same time with matching file names.

Just a techie thing. You mentioned that you could make multipul backups at the same time WITHOUT a reduction in copy speed. Actually, not quite true. The connections speeds factor into this. Once you saturate a USB3 connection (for example), you can't add more to it. In practical application, the limiting part of the data pipeline is typically the card reader. Even if it has a USB3 connection, the internal electronics often hamper obtaining the full potential of the connection. There's other deeper stuff here that slows a dual copy at the same time. Suffice to say, test it both ways. One backup after the first, then try both copies at the same time. Real world testing is always the best...and best done before stepping on set and into the media management fire. Keep up the good videos man. Good stuff!

Thanks for weighing in! I was basing my statement on this post from Hedge: blog.hedge.video/speeding-up-your-on-set-backups-bcd861fed301/amp/ Under the section “Simultaneous Transfers” they claim that copying from one source to three destinations using the MD5 algorithm for data transfers is faster than one by one. They also stipulate that Hedge uses an even faster algorithm than MD5 - xxHash - so the transfer speeds are even faster than what’s depicted in the graph. Perhaps I’m completely misunderstanding this section 🤷🏻♂️ I do 100% agree that real world testing with your own equipment is necessary to know exactly how fast _YOUR_ workflow is. I have a feeling with your profile name you have spent considerably more time handling on-set data transfers than me, though. 😎

@@matthewTobrien Thanks for the reply. I tend to be on the pessimistic side of software claims. One that I did find interesting was, in a meeting with the author of ShotPut, they even regulate their offload speeds as to not burn up the camera card. There are issues with pushing offload speeds and CF, SD and other cards overheating. Not good for the stuff inside the cards. Professional cards like Sony and RED Mags are basically heat sinks that doubles as armor plating to help withstand the riggors of set work. Sorry for the gratuitous plug but I teach DIT and offer books and online training. So, Ya, kinda deep into this part of the woods. LearnDIT.NET That being said, never enough good info, as you are creating, out there.
@matthewTobrien2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you could argue the source of the info is a bit biased. 😬 I should connect you with my good friend here in Omaha who does DIT locally. He loves it. Just wishes there were more legit DIT gigs here. Just got off an indie feature with him in August. I produced all the BTS content. I will check out your site. Thank you for checking out my vid AND being kind and diplomatic with pointing out a claim I make that is most likely not accurate. I greatly appreciate that!

Hey Mathew, thanks for this. i just got Hedge, and am seeing a lot of different ways to setup the presets and also a lot of integrations , have you tried any of them? I am particularly interested in Parachute integration which automatically erases the cards after a successful transfer., definitely could be a good time saver - if it doesn't corrupt your cards I have previously always preferred to format in camera.??? also am interested in the automatic naming conventions for a new project. thoughts?

Great video! Just need to mess around with file renaming and handling multiple cameras which comes before this part of the video.
@evansalina3 жыл бұрын
Correction: best practices are to not touch file names. That can be done in NLE. But some argue for changing names for sony cameras as some cameras start at c001 with every new card. TMYK.
@matthewTobrien3 жыл бұрын
The only time I change original camera files’ names is for videos that I produce professionally for clients or for my more serious film projects where we need to rely on camera reports, proper file naming between multiple cameras, etc. I do, though, rename all of my camera files for my KZbin vids because it helps me more easily sort them into Smart Collections on import.

Bought Hedge while it was on sale a while back. Worth the $$$ P.S. If you're just recording KZbin videos that doesn't require data integrity, then the ROI is not worth it IMO! But I deal with church media that cannot be re-recorded so Hedge makes a great safety net.

Hey Matthew, have you had a chance to compare Hedge to Silverstack? I understand it's a bit more expensive, but also has got more features? I used Silverstack during my jobs as a Data Wrangler on bigger shoots. Maybe it's two different use cases after all... (thinking loud ; )
@matthewTobrien Жыл бұрын
I personally haven't compared Hedge & Silverstack although I'm well aware of Silverstack. My buddy Cody who appears on the channel from time to time uses it when he's Data Wrangler on set. It's definitely more powerful, especially if you're DIT without a dedicated Data Wrangler. Cody and I worked on a feature together (I was the BTS producer) last summer, and he used Silverstack for dailies and it was terrific for that. I think for folks who are working on much smaller shoots or even (as much as it pains me) one-person gigs and they're really conscientious about properly transferring their original camera files to multiple drives throughout the shoot, Hedge is such a great option - especially when you factor in cost. I forget how much Silverstack is for a year subscription, but I know it's incredibly expensive. Cody usually pays for it only for the days he's using it on set, and even then it's much more than a simple Hedge license. But when you've got an insurance company involved and a PostHouse and just standard DIT/Data Wrangler practices on big deal shoots, you gotta go with the industry standard which is - to my knowledge - Silverstack (although I'm sure there are a few others some DITs use).

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to do essentially the same thing; what am I missing here that this app is "better"?
@matthewTobrien3 жыл бұрын
Carbon Copy Cloner is really meant as a replacement to Time Machine as well as a more in-depth backup solution. Hedge is meant for photo/video professionals who need to transfer media from camera cards to external hard drives quickly and reliably. That may be a bit of an oversimplification on my part, but each has a very specific intended use even if there is *some* overlap in functionality.

@@matthewTobrien I don't shoot as you and some other of your subs might well do, but CCC does just fine for all my video work in FCPX and DR17 Studio. I will try Hedge though; thanks for the recommendation.
