Fun fact. On the farms in the Geiranger Fjord, farmers on the mountain sides inwards used to leash/tie up their children with ropes so they wouldn't fall off back in the days while they were out working. Also, if you ever go to Ålesund in the summertime, highly reccomend taking a small detour out to the bird island of Runde and either take a boat trip around the island, or take a hike to see the birds. Watching tens of thousands of birds roost in the mountainside, dozens of eagles soaring around just meters above your head. Glorious. If you search for Rund Runde, a video a german tourist filmed a few years ago, you can see some of the sights. And the tourguide on the boat is my grandfather :D

One thing to mention is the camping culture in Norway. If you can do without the luxuries of a hotel/BnB, pack a tent or book a small cabin at a campground... they’re EVERYWHERE! They’ll have spaces to pitch a tent and facilities to shower and use the bathroom. I spent ~6 days roaming some of the same areas in your video and spent no more than $40/night for a small cabin or ~$20 to pitch my tent. Also, Norway’s “Right to Roam” laws make Free Camping a great way to experience the country... check it out!

I've done a very similar itinerary in Norway - it's a once in a lifetime experience and worth spending the money! Given that it is free to camp in Norway, we camped each night with a few Airbnb stays in between. This minimised driving back to towns and driving out of the way! I would recommend packing a tent if you are willing to have a few nights under the stars!

I've done Norway road trips 6 times now. Some of the things you did in SW Norway I've not been to. I always gravitate to the north half. And of course it really doesn't make any sense to go there outside of the (or near) midnight sun period from May 16 to Aug 15. Before June 1 it is still wintery in Lofoten. We were there last starting 17 May 2017 (Norway Independence Day) and the buds on the trees were JUST beginning to come. This happens in California in early March! I found it not as expensive as you. We have so much experience that we have plenty of time to shop for accommodation. Self catering is definitely the way to go. Restaurants are mediocre and crazy expensive, plus, everything closes at 7pm! Though we did eat a lot of hot dogs from 24h gas station convenience stores (US$2.50). Atlantic Rd. totally a tourist gimmick. Lofoten is not an island. It is 7 main islands, most interconnected by undersea tunnels. Try to go on a midnight sun kayak tour. There is not much in the way of high culture.....it's just the most beautiful place in the world.

My only argument is that you miss the northern lights if you go in summer. Also: the eastern forests are beautiful. For anyone who has already visited the west coast of course. For some reason, tourists also tend to skip the inland mountains, which I've never understood. If the weather is right, it is one of the most amazing places in Norway.

Late to the party, I know, but I think its worth mentioning for newer viewers that the Atlantic Road is at its best in rough weather. Then it shifts from being a 'tourist gimmick' to a really fascinating (and a bit scary) drive.

Senja (big island in Northern Norway) is GORGEOUS in the summer time. I would truly recommend bicycling around the whole island and see the beaches, hike on the beautiful mountain tops. Segla (mountain) is an easy hike (a liiittle bit of non-dangerous climbing to the top), but an amazing view especially if there’s midnight sun. I loved that trip. 😍 I spent a lot of time on Senja before.

Currently doing a semester in Tromsø and I love this video because it covered almost all the places I didn't get to visit. I did though manage to do a Tromsø-Alta-Cape North road trip with other 4 lovely gals and I can confirm Sixt is the best value for money and that the summer period is the best one to go, in general all the way to September it is pretty ok. After that it gets reeeeally cold. Driving in Norway means long hours but the views are insane! Also I can recommend more travelers as possible, splitting the costs of the car and the accommodations really helps :)

It's so funny to see Fjaerland as one of the places you visited. I worked there during the summer a few years ago! Hope you enjoyed it!!
