In this video I show you how to treat a pool that has developed some scaling on the walls. Usually it is just on the walls of the pool but it could also effect the bottom. It is a process that involves lowering the Alkalinity down to 80 ppm (it is okay if it gets as low as 60 ppm for a brief time) and keeping your pH between 7.2-7.6. You then will need to brush your pool with a steel algae brush and possibly lightly sand it with 80-100 grit Sandpaper.
The key to the whole treatment is using one or two bottles of Beautec by Easy Care. This chemical is a descaling agent that will loosen the scale off the pool wall so that brushing or sanding it will remove it. I have used Beautec in several pools with very good results.
Of course if the pH is at 8.2 and the alkalinity is at 120 ppm the process will not be as successful. So along with using Beautec you must keep the pH and Alkalinity low.
The first pool in the video is a new start up that had flow issues. The new filter got dirt in it from the a construction problem and the pool was not circulating well for two weeks after it was filled with water. This caused the scaling to develop after the first month. The scaling was severe. I successfully treated the pool and after six months the plaster is as smooth as silk. Thankfully.
The other pool was remodeled about eight months ago and for some reason there is scale on the north side of the pool. The south side is perfectly smooth. I suspect the fill water is extremely hard since the autofill is on the north side of the pool. Whatever the reason I am currently treating the pool and the scale is disappearing.
In the video I go over a few things that you might not know so I have included links to various videos to help you.:
Muriatic Acid, pH Down: • Muriatic Acid, pH Down
Alkalinity UP, Baking Soda: • Alkalinity Up, Baking ...

Taylor Test Kit (K-1006 - K-2150): • Taylor Test Kit (K-100...

You need to be somewhat familiar with basic pool chemistry. You can do the pH test with either the five in one kit, a Taylor Test Kit or the Test Strips. The first two also has the acid demand test but the Test Strips do not allow you to do that. Basically the acid demand test will help you calculate how much acid to add to lower the pH to 7.2 in your size pool. To calculate your pool volume (how many gallons): • Pool Volume (long vers...
If your Alkalinity gets too low you can raise it without raising the pH significantly by adding Sodium Bicarbonate or Baking Soda. Contrary to what Baking soda advertises it will only raise your pH slightly but the Alkalinity higher.
I mention several times in the video keeping the alkalinity at or near 80 ppm and the pH at 7.2 because that will help control the scale and allow the Beautec to loosen it from the pool surface.
A few things to note. A new pool will sometimes have a huge acid demand as the plaster is curing for the first month or so - sometimes longer. So don't be afriad to be dumping tons of acid in it to keep the pH low. If your pool has a salt system I recommend not using it for the first 6 months in a new or remodeled pool. It will cause the pH to ride too high while the plaster is curing. I would also suggest keeping the maintenance level of Beautec in your pool to prevent the scale from coming back. After the scale is eliminated it is fine for the Alkalinity to go up to the normal range of 90 ppm to 120 ppm in a plaster pool. The pH can also be kept at 7.4 7.6 without fear of the scale returning.
You can also use Beautec when you just fill your pool after a remodel, new construction or if it was drained for some reason. Add one or two bottles to prevent scaling. It can also be added to prevent calcium build-up on your salt water cell.

Correct in your assessment of Beautec and what chemicals and testing methods were needed. My problem is, if one of my accounts ended up with suck a terrible sandpaper scale fallout, that customer would not be my customer anymore if i told him it would take 6 weeks to possibly remove. Also if I was the fool that scaled my service account, I would want to remedy Fast and least money out of pocket. But, nice remedy suggestion.

Great video....is the first step to adjust the pH to 7.2, then brush the pool with a wire brush, followed by adding the Beautec. I have Diamond Bright Midnight Blue Finish that is 3 month old that somehow has developed scale all over the sides and bottom of the pool. I have been told to drain the pool and acid wash, but this video looks like an another alternative

Scale will develop on your swimming pool walls for various reasons. it could be the fill water in your area, a chemistry imbalance or a bad start up if your pool was just built. In this video I show you how to remove it from your pool walls.

Does this work on hydration rings for new plaster? I have a customer that replastered a pool and had to drain it within a year because of the cyanuric acid level is too high. They left the water off overnight and a puddle in the pool. Now they have a bowl ring where the water was sitting for a little bit. The plaster company said it might be called a hydration ring. Is there anything I could do to fade that ring out. They recommended this product beautec. I'm not sure if that will help since it's not really scale but more of a hydration ring I

Have you used the Cal Treat to lower calcium levels? The manufacturer says it’s only recommended for DE filters. The product is suppose to trap the calcium in the filter until backwash. So will a sand filter and cartridge filter be less able to withhold the calcium from the reentering the pool?
@SPL

I've never used that product. It's possible that it will clog a sand filter or cartridge filter. That would be my caution.

Usually raising the chlorine level to 5.0 ppm will do it. You can also try a product called HASA Super Stain Out - it works pretty well in removing those stains. If it is a plaster pool results won't be as good as on a Fiberglass or Vinyl pool.

I have the same issue as Christie and Porcelina.. fiberglass pool with white haze on all surfaces. Has anyone had any luck with removing this yet? Afraid of using anything too coarse, I tried a mild rubbing compound with a green scotch brite pad, but only saw a minor improvement. I also purchased an assortment of rotary brush attachments for a cordless drill (look on Amazon, they have different colored brushes designed for cleaning different surface types, I bought the kit rated for fiberglass) but I won’t get to try those until I open it back up next spring. If anyone has any luck, please post your solution.

@SPL 5 жыл бұрын
From what I have heard from my area rep: ScaleTec works faster but high chlorine levels make it less effective. Beautec works in much the same way but it doesn't matter if the pool has high chlorine readings. ScaleTec works better when chlorine is closer to zero. So I only use the Beautec so that I can use it at any time.

I enjoy watching your videos. Any suggestion on white flakes inside a salt water pool? How do I stop it?
@SPL
@SPL 10 жыл бұрын
The Beautec will help cut down on the salt cell calcium build-up. That is what the white flakes are. Depending on your salt system type the cell will reverse a few times every day that it is running and "clean" the plates. The problem is that the salt cell is after the filter so the white calcium build-up blows back into the pool. I also use Natural Chemistry PHOSfree which is made for Phosphate problems in your pool. Not sure why it works but whenever I get a pool with flaky white blow back I will add 4-8 oz (The bottle cap is 4 oz) to the skimmer each week. After about 3 weeks the problem seems to stop. Have done this several times so I know it works. The tip came from a Pentair Warranty guy in my area who works on the Pentair IC40 salt cells (which tend to have lots of white flaky blow back). So if it is not too much of an investment I would suggest a bottle of the Beautec and one bottle of the PHOSfree Phosphate remover. That will do the trick. You will also need to try and keep the pH under 8.0, near 7.6 which is hard to do in a salt water pool. The side effect of the salt system generating chlorine is that it will also raise your pH up - sometimes considerably which will lead to calcium deposits in the salt cell. Clean the salt cell every 3 months or when needed also helps.
