So what do you do if you find someone who is having a seizure? Number one, you want to stay calm. Assess the area, make sure there isn't anything that can cause injury to the person while they are having a seizure. You want to pay attention to the length of the seizure. You want to clear onlookers away, you don't want to clutter up the area with people looking and ogling and gawking, you have to be sensitive to the person who is having the seizure as well. Don't put anything in the person's mouth. I know that's an old wives tale to put a spoon or a wallet in their mouth. They will not swallow their tongue. You just need to ride out the seizure, you don't need to put anything in their mouth, it can cause more damage to stick something in there. You don't need to hold the person down, that can also cause more damage if you're fighting against them while they are shaking. Afterwords, you want to put them in the recovery position. Roll them over to their side, that way if they start to vomit, or any kind of saliva, or any kind of fluids come out it will fall and they won't choke. So once they've recovered you want to help them up, get them to a safe place, it may take them a while to fully get back to their normal self. If the seizure lasts for more than five minutes you want to call 911. If the person suffering the seizure is pregnant or diabetic you want to call 911. If it happens after a head blow, or after ingesting any poison or chemical you want to call 911. If the person has another seizure withing 24 hours call 911. If the person is epileptic and has seizures often they will wear a bracelet that says epileptic, this is part of their normal life. Be supportive, help them as much as you can and be reassuring.

Whilst the casualty is having the seizure you should either hold the head or place something soft under the head to prevent further injury. DO NOT hold the head rigid but rather move with the casualty. Once they come out of the seizure do your Primary Survey, (DRAB - Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, to establish if the casualty is breathing or not. Do a head to toe, Secondary Survey to establish other injures and IF they are breathing place in the recovery position, injuries permitting,

I've had every kind of seizure a person can have and I'm not epileptic, I don't do drugs or take random chemicals lol. I have a seizure condition that was caused by spinal meningitis leaving scars on my brain. The advice here is spot on, but you need to know that not every seizure begins or ends with shaking. Most of my seizures don't have any shaking at all. I have walked into traffic, driven on the wrong side of the road (when i was still driving) and had conversations with unknowing people.

I have grand maul siezures. Sometimes they last for 30 seconds to about a minute. The last seizure I had was on November 19th of last year just before thanksgiving. I hadn’t had a seizure since 2012. And i had gone a long time without having a seizure. It turned out I also had a UTI. I had gotten to the gym and just barely made it into the door

You do have epilepsy. After 2 seizures, you would be diagnosed of having it, regardless of the cause. I also have epilepsy, caused by meningitis. 😮

My 5 year old baby boy had one 2 nights ago. I never knew about what to do but everything you explained I did without hesitation. The scariest time of my life. He stopped breathing. He came to about 4 minutes later then went back to having another one. 😢 We spent 3 nights in the emergency room. He had another one while we were there

You put them on there side immediately first thing, and yes do not hold them down it will throw them in to another seizure, your correct about the crowding around them, do not do this, it scares them when they come back and see a mob. One most important part, help them move when there ready, when you do this it brings them out of the seizure much faster, but let them decide when to do the moving, not you. And i can tell you in there heart they always will remember that person who helped them that day, no matter who it was. Grand Ma seizure can be deadly with no uncertain terms. I KNOW!!!

A kid in my middle school (different class and grade and I dont know who he/she is) had a seizure. I heard that he/she fell on the ground face first , and busted their mouth wide open .This made me think about what would happen if the same situation happened to my friends , so I came here .

I was just outside the Mall (where I work). A friend and I were talking to a girl who works at another store - we were outside talking to her,. She's a smaller girl, maybe 5'3...and she seemed just fine.....then and after a minute of normal conversation, she stood up and sort of walked/wandered around us with a glazed look in her eyes. I have fainted before, and noticed something wasn't right. I was expecting her to faint or fall over...and surely, she did. I caught her, and her head did not hit the concrete. She then began to have a seizure as I held her in my arms for about a minute. At first I was scared and trying to think of what exactly was best to do. I knew not to put anything in her mouth, and I knew to put her on her side so she didn't choke. She came to about 2 minutes later after the seizing slowed down and she vomitted a little. When she looked at me I just kept tell her "It's okay, you're safe, everything is okay....relax..." -I know the feeling of "coming to" after fainting - there is a moment of panic as relaity snaps back into place.....you dont quite know where you are, who is with you, or what's happening... We asked her if she knew where she was at, or if she remembered what happened - she didn't. My friend called 911 just after she fell over....when they arrived 3 min later (very fast), they also asked if she knew where she was....and she didn't. It was unexpected, and scary - but really my friend and I were just in the right place at the right time. Now I'm searching online to see if what I did was proper.... I keep wondering....what if I wasn't there? What if she hit her head on the concrete when she fell? What if she was face down on the concrete having the seizure and no one was around? I can't help but feel things could have been much worse.

Peace Thanks. The urge to catch her came from my experience with fainting. She just had that look like she was 'about' to be unconscious. She learned that day after going to the hospital that she is mildly epileptic..and now takes medicine for it. She came and took time a few days later to thank me.. Feels good to help someone.

R Hes thats good, glad it didn't turn out to be worse than mild epilepsy, although, that itself is pretty scary. I recently experienced witnessing a seizure happen to a loved one, they had MRI done after that and doctors found a small tumor, lucky it wasn't cancerous, they are going to get it removed soon, it's a scary experience witnessing someone go through a seizure.. sad all these things happen to people. anyways you did well

Watching to see what else they do and then describing it for paramedics isn't "doing nothing." In fact it's doing way MORE than one of our trauma nurses did when this patient was having multiple seizures and just bc they didn't look like what she was used to seeing she said "She's not having a seizure, that's bs" and walked away. An MRI showed that the patient in question has a cavernous hemangioma on her brain, and seizures are the main symptom of a cavernoma. Some people aren't fit to take care of a pet rock, much less real people.

@kayell1010
@kayell1010 6 жыл бұрын
No, do not call 911 as the video says. Only if the seizures last more than 5 hours or if they bash their head or if they have had more than one in 24 hours. There really are not a lot of tips to give. You just have to let them have their seizure, roll them on their side, and let them rest. If they are on concrete, put something soft under their head if you can.

There is such a thing that could happen refered to as "swallowing of the tongue" where the tongue gets lodged and blocks the airway. Can be difficult to dislodge it. I wonder if putting someone on their side would help prevent it...
@bethanymccutcheon1722
@bethanymccutcheon1722 5 жыл бұрын
It is physically impossible to swallow your tongue - try it - you can't. The tongue can block the airway but if the person is seizing they are breathing - you can't move that much with no oxygen. If they stop seizing and they are not breathing start CPR and call for an ambulance.

I am Epileptic. I feel I have to make a point about the "No spoon in mouth" thing. I Totally agree with it though personally I would be more concerned about damaging teeth. But nothing in mouth is ideal either. I have chipped broken and cracked lots of teeth during seizures simply through snapping or grinding teeth. However something that not rigid is fantastic! The corner of a paperback book, the folded edge of a towel or blanket. It puts something between your teeth so you cannot damage them, but it not rigid so you bite through it like you would a ruler etc.

How can we move a person to his or her side while the convulsions? I mean that can cause injury. Most of the people are saying to move during convulsions and not after.
@June-rb1nx
@June-rb1nx 6 жыл бұрын
you need to WAIT until the seizure /convulsion is over....if the person is having a grand mal seizure, it's pretty hard to try to move them during the seizure. The reason for putting them on their side is to let the saliva in their mouth run out after you have put them on their side.
@Widdekuu91
@Widdekuu91 6 жыл бұрын
+June Not just saliva, laying them in recovery-position keeps the airway free, the tongue will not block the airway, any vomiting that might happen, will not be ón them and the placement of the head is 'perfect' for vomiting without too much trouble (a.k.a. choking) and overall it's just the safest position.
@kevincook1356
@kevincook1356 Жыл бұрын
The recovery position can be done during or after a seizure. It is done to help keep any saliva and/or vomit from entering the lungs. Aspiration pneumonia is often the result of vomiting during a seizure. 😮

it's impossible to hold someone down that is truly having a grand mal seizure. Seizures normally last for seconds to 1-2 minutes....It's best to make sure the patient isn't around something that may hurt them...but basically until the seizure is over just let it run it's course. One the seizure is over, turn the person on their side so that all the saliva will drain from their mouth. Talk to them in a calm reassuring voice. Let them know that they are okay, and that they had a seizure and need to lay still and relax.

if they fall on something like concrete the chances that they will bang their head up, or possibly break their head open(and will have to have stitches (possibly),but all seizures are different. IF they have a seizure and fall on the sidewalk today...they might get a gash on their head....and then again, they might not...you can't second guess what is going to happen. If you walk with your friend every day, I am sure the friend or her family has told you what to do or not to do ....??? I can't imagine a family member allowing a person who has seizures to go walking with a friend without informing said friend on what to do in case of a seizure.....
