How To Trim A Window, A Different Way When Using Metal Siding, (Not J-Trim)

In this one I try something new building some custom trim to trim out my windows. I was tired of the same old look with J-Trim so I thought I would try something different.

I installed vinyl siding on my sunroom without using J-Channel around the doors or under the soffit. I trimmed out the doors using PVC boards similar to your installation, and covered the top run of vinyl near the soffit with PVC trim as well. It’s a cleaner, and higher-end look.

Thank you! I have been looking for a method to trim my window and doors to replace the ugly aluminum with J-trim that was installed with exterior vinyl siding. Could not figure out how to make it work. This approach (with modification to weather-proof the exterior) will provide an excellent finished look. Well, it looks great in my mind. Hopefully the final product looks as good as the picture in my head. 😀

I think it will look better than J trim for sure, I am currently building a house and will be using metal board and batten siding and I am going to use the same method to trim my windows and doors out as well. You are correct a couple extra steps will have to be taken to waterproof, but I think it is feasible, good luck with it and thanks for the comment

Thank You, it trims them out pretty nice. One thing I would do different is I would add the trim after your metal is up because with the wood trim you don’t have the flexibility as you do with j-trim getting your metal in. Cut your trim and then mark a line around the entire window where your metal will hit the trim then you can run your metal just shy of the line and then your trim will lay right in there. Make the metal hanging easier! Appreciate the comment and good luck with it!

Most people hate to paint after 5;6;7 Years.If you like to paint that’s a great way to trim them .Looks awesome..

Perfect, looks great. How deep into the wood stock did you cut for the metal to slide in, in both dimensions?

I allowed 1” back from the edge and removed 13/16 for my material to slide in. Appreciate the comment! If you decide to do it I would go ahead and put the metal up and just hold it back from the window frame and then add the trim detail afterwards. Can be a little difficult to get metal behind in some places. We live and learn and that was a test run.

I'm doing a new house construction for myself and I'd like to do metal. How would you do all the exterior trim out of wood if you were doing it? Would you do the same thing and saw out a channel in the wood for all the trim like the corner trim and the base trim?

How soon will you be at that step? I am building a house now and will be using wood for my trim and metal board and batten siding. I am thinking / contemplating two different ways to install. I wouldn't recommend doing it exactly as I did on the interior windows because you would get water into the rabbet you cut for siding to slide into. Hard to explain in a comment, if you have some time before you will be installing I should have a video coming out talking about the way I am going to do it.

The trim was standard framing material, inside the window frame was primed pine 3/4” boards
