my personnal experience is that no edges allows for the picture to "come alive" and spread out of the card's borders , while white edges kinda limit the picture to its rectangle, I see the frame, my brain thinks "framed picture" and it limits greatly how I feel and perceive the symbolism and stories of the picture

Great tutorial. I'd like to add a few more tips, as a collage artist who works with paper trimmers all the time. After trimming your cards, I'd recommend burnishing the cut edges to give them a bit more protection from humidity and delaminating with use. I would hold the deck together in a block, sandwiched between cardboard sheets, held together with clamps or rubber bands. Then rub the cut edges with a smooth stone, bone folder, or smooth metal, like the back of a spoon until the paper feels smooth to the touch. It shouldn't take long but will need some elbow grease. Optionally, you can take a cloth, rub it on some softened beeswax - not much wax - and rub the cut edges with that just as you would with the other kinds of tools. Again, you want the paper to feel smooth, not sticky, rough, or like it has wax on it. With or without wax, burnishing helps seal the paper surface. To make sure your trim is even, you can just put masking tape marks on the paper cutter, so you don't make a mistake about where to line up the card. Best part is you can write on the masking tape exactly which measurement the tape indicates, and it comes off the cutter easily.

I could have never imagine just how much of a difference removing the border would make to the Rider Waite deck. It is stunning! So much more vibrant and focused. Also, on a slightly unrelated note, thank you for keeping in the sound of the guillotine and corner cutter in the sped up part of the video. That was so satisfying to listen to. 😆

I physically can't deal with huge tarot or oracle cards, so I think this is a great ideas. Removing the white border really made the artwork pop. Your trimmed cards look much more vibrant.

The colors are much more vibrant without the white border. That white border seems to wash the colors out. I want to trim my Druid Craft deck. It’s huge and I can’t handle it. Want to trim it but I’m too big of a chicken!

I so enjoyed seeing your method for deck trimming, it's so fun to see how others go about the process. I trim decks mostly for the same reasons you do, I can't shuffle most of my larger decks! Thank you so much for the shout-out as well, I am so glad that you enjoy my mods! I've been enjoying your content for a long time (under my personal account but I'm following here too now!) so it was such a thrill to hear my videos were helpful for you. Love the way your RWS came out, I'm planning on doing my Centennial at some point. Thank you for a wonderful video, I really enjoyed it! ❤️

OMG I love you for this. The box issue can be fixed with some foam board in the bottom and sides. Just cut to size and put a dot of glue on it and glue it in the box. I have little hands and have struggled with shuffling! Never in a million years have i ever thought of doing this. Guess what I'm doing this weekend! P.S. love your makeup today.

I’ve modified a lot of my decks by trimming white borders and edging in colors. My favorite tools are scissors, marking pens and a cheap corner rounder 😁. The guillotine-style paper cutter definitely works better and is less damaging to cards than the slider type 😉. I often obsess over imperfections but it really doesn’t bother me in my altered cards. Yours turned out beautifully!

Hi Hearth. I do a lot of scrapbooking and I'd like to add that to need to take your time with each cut with the guillotine. If you get into too much of a rhythm and not hold onto the card well enough, you can misaligned cards My sliding cutter allows you to hold either side so the paper stock stays completely flat - no bending as you mentioned

I have trimmed a few decks, mostly because they had big borders that took away from the image and made them hard to shuffle. My Llewellyn I also trimmed off the titles. It is my favourite deck and I use it every day and don't need the titles. I have also trimmed my Druidcraft, my Druidc Annimal and Plant oracles, my Wildwood and my Universal Rider Waite Smith, but I gave that one away. I used scissors and don't recommend it. I will invest in a cutter like yours if I want to trim any more. I am considering trimming my Crow Tarot but it has three different image sizes and a swirly design on the top of each Major, so need to think about it more and make some copies and trim those to see if I like it.

I really liked the eyeshadow as soon as I saw it matched to your trousers - very cool! On topic, I watched another channel trimming/altering/remaking her decks and I was intrigued but I'm going to hit the secondhand stores and try to find a cheapo deck I can practice on. I'm slowly working my way through your videos from oldest on. I've learned a lot and am so happy to have all this thoughtful info on the craft - thank you so much! - love from Canada

I definitely trim decks. Sometimes it's because I don't like the borders and think the cards will look better without, sometimes it's because they're too damn big for me to deal with. And sometimes just because I feel like it! I do enjoy edging them as well, just because pretty colours. Also, your eyeshadow is rad, and your trousers are... I wish I had the confidence to wear them, and that's not a back-handed compliment, I promise!

"Kadomaru" is probably Japanese. It would be pronounced "kah-doh-mah-roo", where the 'r' is halfway between a Spanish tapped 'R' and an English 'L'. If you're wondering, it's effectively the word for "corner" with a suffix added that's added to lots of names (usually names like these are applied to little boys and pets). It basically means "Mr. Corner", but with the "Mr." part not so much in the formal sense we use it in English. More like how you'd name a cat "Mr. Paws". EDIT: Someone pointed out "maru" also means "circle", so "kadomaru" could be intended as "circle-corner", which would also make sense.
@malachyte_art
@malachyte_art 3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the "maru" here means "circle". So "kado" as in "corner", and "maru" as in circle", together implying a rounded corner.

It really makes the standard RWS deck very dynamic. I think trimming makes the energy more intense. I have a Chinese deck I wanted to focus on the images. However, I discovered that the Major cards were a different size than the Minor. So I had to make some serious adjustments. I ended up buying another Chinese deck because the first ended up quite wonky.

I’ve done one deck, I used scissors, because that’s all I had. 😁 I did it for a couple of reasons: they were too tall to shuffle, they were given to me by my best friend and they didn’t feel like they were mine yet, they kept shouting at her when I tried to pull cards when she was there. 😂 And on top of that, they were a bootleg too, which she didn’t realise, so I felt like if I screwed them up, it wasn’t that big of a deal. I also rebacked them according to Boho Tarot’s instructions and they came out really well.

Hello @HeartWitch! First of all I want to thank you for your persuasive video tutorial! It was very beneficial! Secondly, I really like your academic way of expression! Your videos show undoubtedly that you are doing a good research before to record a tutorial! ☺️ Regarding the Tarot cards with those white borders - I have always liked the vibrant colours, however I have felt that there is something that I can do, in order to feel more connected with the deck and I just found the missing part of the puzzle. ❤️ I appreciate your good performance and well presented information! 🥰

I find that the borders remind me of frames which stop the picture. I use a guide taped to the cutting board so each card was cut the same. This way you don’t have to measure each cut. Enjoyed your video, thank you 4 sharing…

Hey Hearth! Are you by chance experienced in using rune stones and/or feel like you can educate us on them? I‘ve had my rune stones for over two years but I‘ve hardly ever used them because I don‘t really know how. The book I have does not really explain it well and I don‘t really like the way the author expresses himself, he make the practice sound quite exclusive. I always really enjoy your videos and the way you explain things so I thought I‘d ask. Either way, thank you for your hard work ❤️
